These duels looked like they were pure suffering for poor Trell. Paul, at least, looked like he could have SOME fun with his deck, even if it wasn't exactly amazing. But Trell? He just had an expression of pure pain, from start to finish. I felt for him. Great video, you both did great enduring the torment of these Starter Decks.
@@CornBreadtm1 As someone who played old ass YGO, with RotA at 1. I never had trouble getting Monster's into my hand. This isn't time period issue, this is either Trell built his deck poorly, or he has terrible luck.

@@simon6157Ritual and Synchro are my favorites. Ritual for the mystical vibe and the crazy monsters that they summon, but Synchros always make me play with that Alec, anime hype energy
Synchro summoning can actually set up some decent combos. Trell could've used Quillbolt Hedgehog's effect when he controlled a tuner monster to special summon it from the graveyard and could've gone into a level 7 synchro from there. If there were level 7 synchros in the deck.
I'm an old timer player that stopped following yu gi oh for a long while after GX series. I'm learning all the new summoning mechanics from playing Duel Links. Xyz is fun! It's crazy how versatile and accessible that mechanic is just by editing your extra deck a bit!!
I remember my friend picking up the XYZ starter, and I picked up the Light/Dark dragon structure deck. Crazy how steep the power level was with the structure at the time.
After watching this and seeing how much Trell struggled, I ended up looking more closely at his deck build choices and all I can say is "oof". As a long time Synchro player, I really am baffled by it. That said, this had made me think that it'd be interesting to see a bonus video to go with these duels; where y'all discuss the reasons you built the decks you way you did. I reckon it'd shed some light on how people approach going back to older decks like these during the current insanity of modern Yugioh, while showing off cards and combos people might not think of using due to their age.
Duelist Toolbox is the best Starter Deck ever printed at release. Junk Destroyer was immediately a meta relevant card, seeing play in both Quickdraw Decks but also bringing Junk Synchron into Plant Chaos decks because it was just that strong of a card if it resolved.
Synchro are my favorite from the extra deck. The white border compliments a lot of cool cards like Stardust Dragon. Plus, 5Ds was my favorite arc and the summon animation for synchros in duel links and master duel is rad.
This and the discussion Videos of Paul are my favourite types of videos you guys make. Gimmick duels for nostalgia and discussions about the reality of the tcg.
I wonder what a format would be like if each player could only have one type of special summon mechanic (ritual, fusion, syncro, xyz, or link, only pendulum can access all), and a new banlist was started from scratch.
it would be fun if there was a sort of starter deck tournament to see which one's the best, but it would probably come down to which one's the newer one
I think that Synchro had better limits, the problem with, all now days, summoning mechanic, too many powerful generics. That's the biggest mistake of Yugioh. They needed to have more restrictions to archetypes for the summoning mechanics Synchro and XYZ from the get go, or just make the generics less powerful.
I think XYZ summoning the best summoning mechanic. All around, I think it’s the simplest of the ED summons to explain, I.e. stack two cards with the same level to summon an XYZ monster. It’s also balanced in that you can only use their effects by detaching a material or if they have material (usually). Lastly, any and every deck should theoretically be able to XYZ summon as long as they play two copies of the same monster.
When I bought the first XYZ structure deck, and found out what kind of summoning it was, I had the thought that the mechanic seemed a bit too easy to pull off, and would be a lot better if XYZ monsters were main deck monsters instead of extra deck monsters.
I started playing (somewhat) competitively around the time that XYZ started deck came out. That being said, my cousin played Synchros with Junk destroyer, Nitro Warrior, Stardust dragon, etc. and I still have fun memories playing against it
oh god i had that synchro starter deck as a child, I couldn’t afford many cards so this thing was the core of my first deck before i managed to assemble a black wing one years later
I really liked this video, this duels with the Starter Decks and everything, but what I liked the most was that Trell was wearing a General Grievous skullcap. As a Star Wars fan, I really liked that!
Damn Xyz Symphony, that takes me WAYYYYYYY back. One of my first Starter Decks, got it 2 months after I gave my Blue eyes to my friend who wanted to build Dragons. I needed a new boss to fight against him, and Utopia was that.
I started getting out of yugioh when Xyz monsters were taking off, so Synchro summoning is the biggest nostalgia mechanic for me. It was also the mechanic that made the Extra Deck relevant in a way that GX's fusion focus had just barely started to do.
Ok so I had a random question that popped up in my head while watching, Could Feedback Warrior make something like a XYZ or a Link monster level 3. I know this seems like a dumb question but I thought since it says "it becomes level 3." And not something like "Change it's level to 3." I thought it could give a level to monsters that don't have levels. Again this was a random question, even if it was possible I don't think anyone would be giving up their normal summon to make a XYZ or Link monster a level 3.
I think a fun but painful deck building challenge is that each person has to build a deck only using cards that are currently banned and you are only allowed to use one copy of each of the banned cards and see how good of a deck you could put together.
Trell cheated and Paul didn’t take 450 damage from Man-Eater Bug for its Flip Effect is MANDATOR, meaning Man-Eater Bug HAD to destroy a monster on the field to resolve the effect.
I love XYZ monsters, they're simple, fun, and the rank mechanic is a lot of fun without other cards, like Gravity Bind for instance. Also, early XYZ support could also work as fringe synchro support so it didn't feel very intrusive as a new summoning mechanic. I ran an XYZ/Synchro hybrid deck years ago that was bad, but had some unique plays that I would pull off with other cards.I also love the Utopia archetype, so that also plays a role in my choice.
It would've been so funny if they went through the whole Utopia animation when Paul asked "What Xyz do i summon...?" And Paul's like No, not you Utopia XD
XYZ is my favorite summoning mechanic. I love the uniqueness of XYZ summoning's materials that act as a currency. It's not something I've ever seen before. Not only that, I like that each rank seems to have its own identity, and XYZ is not as generic or splashable as some of the other mechanics.
Wile I can appreciate all extra deck cards, I just got to say that XYZ summoning is for people that don't normally play yugioh. With that off the chest you all have a grate day and may the luck of the draw be in your favor.
I ended up having to stop the video and go back to look at how he built his deck and oof, yeah, 110% his issues were in how he built the deck. I'd love to see them discuss the reasons they picked the cards they used, because I'm honestly baffled by his choices here. I might have to go watch the other videos like this to see how they went, but looking at this one I can't help but wonder if playing modern Yugioh had influenced him in some way (either by building with modern yugioh decks in mind, or trying too hard to be "old school").
synchro summoning is the absolute goat for me. I can only think of three decks from fall 2008-fall 2011 that made the format unfun (tele dad 08, frog 2010, and six sam 2011 and that deck was only legal for three weeks). 5Ds anime was so good and seeing those white background cards made 12 year old me flip shit with excitement

20:23 you just missed quillbolt hedgehog when I was screaming on my screen xD, but yeah after enemy controller on shine knight you could synchro summon junk destroyer with quillbolt hedgehog and destroy his face down spells, unfortunate but happens to anyone
Xyz is easier; Synchro is more interesting. Both are equally cool/fun. I’d like a Xyz Synchro archetype deck that can combine them! Maybe a tuner Xyz monster that can be used to synchro down instead of go up in level? Similar to the polar bear archetype that failed
Sangan is good with a labrynth deck if you needed a labrynth servant or whatever even if you bricked a little bit. But of course there's other ways to get the boss monsters out with or without him

Why is this video not supported/sponsored by Konami....This would have been the perfect time to promote the new Syncro XYZ decks vs the old ones.
I don't know that either one is much better than the other, either lmao
Cause why pay them to promote what they’ll end up promoting through play any way for free😂
It'd make the new one look bad by comparison
I like Synchro more PURELY because the cards are by far the most stylish card
Although the XYZ summoning is good, imo, the Synchro summoning has a place deep in my heart before I left Yu-Gi-Oh after the 5Ds era.
Xyz is superior in every way (it’s not, I see the difference. But I want to be contrarian)
