Although this was an excellent film and one of my favorites. He couldn't see her vision, but wanted her to see his. She returned to him in the end, but your passion just doesn't disappear overnight. We as women make many sacrifices for love and our families. Smh

Na Na Million I don’t think he was blind to her vision. He didn’t like her being treated like a ”thing” and not a human. Just like the old Black woman lady he wanted as a background scene. The people around her were PHONY. Perkins said he collected inanimate objects called woman. Trying to kill her boyfriend is a good reason for him not to understand. Sometimes people from to different worlds need time to find their place and grow together. This is what a two hour movie reflecting the attitudes of the time.
"Success is nothing without someone you love to share it with" one of the greatest lines of all time.

Oh and studio heads taking chances on obscure works written by lesser known talent. For starters!

@@triumphbrowser The world was less JADED . There was still a hint of innocence. By the way, this is NOT a great movie. Diana suffered after not winning the Oscar for Lady Sings the Blues. I think that she felt that the doors shut for her in terms of acting . She was TOTALLY wrong in the role of "old age" Dorothy in the Wiz. Even though she gave her all. She REALLY needed a better vehicle AFTER "Lady" . This , is NOT it. What she SHOULD have done was taken a smaller role in a BETTER movie. By a better DIRECTOR , like Scocesse , Robert Altman , or Sidney Lumet.
Hands down, best leading man & leading lady pair EVER. Their chemistry is palpable. This movie is a classic. Makes me wish I could turn back the hands of time.

Back in the 90's I was having problems at home and desperately wanting to leave. I was sewing garments up like crazy because it was cheaper to make them and then took this passion to the Fashion Institute of Technology for a degree in pattern making. Do You Know Where You Are Going was my theme song! It helped me through some tough times.

It wasn't just "a man" that did not see Tracy's dreams. Others did not see her dreams because they either had fulfilled their own dreams or just thought of her as "the help" or easily replaced. This is when one really has to PUSH to bring their dreams to fruition. It is YOU that must believe in YOU. After that, it's an adornment.

jynupe the issue is not being alone, the point is to find true love that is supportive, encouraging and endearing. If you ask me, Brian was a selfish, egotistical, opinionated man but I guess because he was handsome, ambitious and of course the same race as her. As far as I am concerned, the only man that showed Mahogany any version of true, selfless love was Chris, the elderly rich man that always supported her dreams and ambitions, he obviously wanted more from her but even at the end when she insisted on returning home, he did not stop her and helped her get home. To me, that's a man that is interested in your welfare... 😒

The rich guy wanted to own her life her talent her beauty.. Not one of them wanted to be there for her. Its amazing how ppl look at your light like a firefly lightening bug. And want to capture it for themselves. They don't want you OWNING YOUR OWN LIGHT you were born with.

Fun fact: Diana Ross walked off set mid-production and didn't return because she and Berry Gordy got into it. Berry had to finish the film with a body double.

I'll never forget seeing this movie for the first time when I was about 10 years old. I was flipping through the channels (this is before cable) and it had just started... It was about 10pm at night, and I was really tired. However, I couldn't stop watching it and was completely beguiled by Diana Ross. What a beautiful story... And I don't care what kind of music you like, nobody with half a heart can tell me that that theme song doesn't warm up your entire body with nothing but bittersweet serenity.

Myron Martin , Not true...Blaxploitation movies started in 1970. Say what you want but those people got paid and created stars like Pam Grier and Richard Roundtree, Shaft, Flip Wilson, Richard Pryor. Diana did a lot of tv and film in those days, but never blaxploitation ghetto shit..
Please don't forget about Hattie McDaniel the first African American Woman to win an Oscar in 1939 for Gone With The Wind, Sidney Poitier, the first African American Man to win an Oscar for Lilies of the Field in 1964, and let's not also forget Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte and Sammy Davis Jr., just to name a few.

The time when hair wasn't absolutely natural but it was her own!! Back in the 1980's well at least the last of the 70's because I did too. My Senior picture was my own hair. even Janet Jackson wore her real hair in those times. This was before that big hair Diana wore. A whole new fashion for her and Janet. When I was in Rome ,I was determined to have my picture taken at that fountain she was pushed into
I mentioned it to my driver,he was unfamiliar with the film and didnt know the fountain. He dropped us off to shop,and when he picked us up,he told us he had researched and found the fountain. I was so happy,and I got my pic,funny thing is I didnt realize until I watched the movie AFTER returning home,that i had possed like T.Chambers ,but i was holding my umbrella instead of a fur muff.As we were about to pull off ,I smiled when I saw a van pull up to the same fountain and a Black woman emerged smiling for her own photo.

This woman was not very beautiful, when she 1st got starred. But she always had charisma, talent, Stardom, believing in herself. She was like wine. She got better, with time. Defiant age!
As a Latino/Black Man, I have always enjoyed Black entertainers looking glamorous and successful (albeit the drama that's part of the story). And specially back in the 70's, when HARDLY any Latinos were seeing on mainstream media playing dignified roles, at least it was comforting to see that part of my heritage had some representation.

Knowing your forth and maintain is successful.
You I watched this movie when I was a baby girl back in the 80s. Saw it through different eyes then, all caught up in tv romance and didn't know a thing. Now, I still find it moving, but I'm afraid I can't....... I think, she did not necessarily give up anything. She just couldn't advocate for herself, did not discover her inner voice, he did. She was driven, In the end she obtained the success she sought but was lonely. The story is about balance and advocating for yourself.
I was in the 5th grade when my Mommy took me and my cousins to see this movie I ❤ it just like when she took me to see Lady Sings the Blues i was in awe of Diana Ross acting skills and BEAUTY when she modeled all those beautiful outfits BRAVO Ms. Ross 👏🏼👏🏼

My take from this movie has always been to strive hard to fulfill your dreams and aspirations(man or woman) but if you are standing alone at the end of your journey what was it all for?...True happiness does not always equate to riches and fame!
And fulfilling dreams and aspirations is hardly about riches and fame. there's more to a complete life than intimacy, and there's much to be done and to discover without anyone standing around handy all the time.
No matter what...it was all for self-realisation to the highest levels of awareness to reach a high vibration on that journey! we came to earth on are own in body and will leave on our own...It was all for self-realisation, knowing yourself full filling your dream even if that means standing alone in the end. All though we are never alone as we think!
You hit the nail on the head! Though, there are those who value money, fame and material possessions above and before all else, that doesnt feed the spirit, dehumanizes the person, and is a virus that can infect those around.
@@helenlauer139 i believe the issue is that many of us settle. We become intimate with those who cant or wont come beside us. We need to only allow those in our lives, and only be a part of someone else's life, when it's shared ideals and vision, where we can feel safe about the intimacy because we are walking side by side, one another's Jonathan, equal life partners. We should not commit our lives to someone because we NEED intimacy. But true intimacy (much more than physical)can grow as a natural part of sharing our lives with our life partners. 😁

Lady Sings The Blues was a masterpiece and she lost for best actress, at the Academy Awards, to Liza Minnelli, that was a damn, shame, with a lot of racism sprinkled on top, I saw Cabaret it wasn't that good of a movie.
And I'm really trying to be objective not because she was black, or Diana Ross, it just was a superior film. And if I am, 'tis ain't nobody's bizzness If I do. 🤩

I went to see this in the theatres when it opened in Toronto with my first bf . Loved it …..Diana was our / my first glamour diva artist followed from that day on . The theme song always gets me back to those carefree days myself . And the line In the picture : “ success is nothing if u have no one to share it with “ has over all the years at times popped into my mind . Watching this now in 2024 for the first time since all those years ago . Sweet memories , poignant remembrances of days gone by .

Was in my final year at Uni and they played the Album-Mahogany daily and almost perpetually in the cafeteria. Fell in love with album and artist and 44 years later came across the movie which I never heard of and loved every moment and Diana Ross has climbed 1000 steps higher in Super Star esteem.
