  • Wuthering Heights is perhaps my favorite Victorian novel of all time. Why is it such a polarizing read and why do all of us keep coming back to it, whether we liked it or not?

@@Laura-zq5xd I haven't details, tho I seem to recall hearing a few years ago that she was sick. The news of her passing was sudden. I heard it from Kate, of Books and Things.

Virginia Woolf wrote an essay about Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights and how she adored the latter.

At 61 years old I finally have read Wuthering Heights. I feel mixed feelings about the book itself, and let me say I struggled big time with reading Joseph’s words. Haha! But in the end, I fall on the side of “loved it”. I had trouble at first keeping the names of characters straight. It was distracting me from the story, even. But I printed out a list of the characters from a webpage I found and persevered. By the halfway point, I could barely put the book down. Thank you for your insights and I really enjoy your channel, even though I am a novice with classics, really. I always take away something good from your videos. I know this is an old video, so you may not see this comment, but since I only just read the book, I searched your channel for the topic.

I really think the characters make this book what it is - personally, I love how flawed and realistic the characters are. They’re all unbelievably well observed and so interesting. Maybe my favourite book

Speaking of the language, me as non-native with fairly decent level of English, struggled a lot in the beginning, having to translate certain words or expressions I have never even heard of! I did not let that discourage me though, for which I'm glad :) well, modern English is a bit different tham Victorian English indeed! At least I learnt smth new :)

You know- this is my second time revisiting this video (thanks Kate)- your breakdown of this novel is exceptional. Im one of those who has mixed feelings about all these aspects yet found it powerful & impressive, & have always wanted to go back & re read precisely for those reasons 🤓💜🙂

Thankyou for this video. I was looking for a review/video on this Wuthering Heights Edition (bella & Edward's favourite book) and you seem to be the only one to own this particular edition.

This one of my favourite books of all time!! You have made an amazing video to really represent this book in the best way. I loved heathcliff even though he is a baddie.. Nellie annoys me but that’s what makes it amazing. To me this a gothic romance that makes Victorian literature easy to read 🎉🎉

Wow I am reading "Wuthering Heights " just went through 1st chapter .But watched the movie of it it was really awesome. Movie helped me in knowing the characters ,like all the characters are cherishing in my memory. So now it is easy for me to critically read it and also formulate some research problems . Thanks for your nice presentation.

Wuthering Heights has always been one of my favorites too. I love the atmosphere and the beautiful language of it. It has been a couple of years since I reread it but I’m thinking next year may bring another reread.
This was a great discussion of it.
Oh and have you read Twilight? Bella is reading Wuthering Heights either in Twilight or Eclipse I cant remember now - I’m assuming that is why that edition you have was made - I bet there were a lot of teens who were interested in Wuthering Heights when the Twilight series was popular. I remember rereading WH after reading Twilight.

I was not a fan of this novel. My thoughts are quite similar to Brian at Bookish's channel. It was interesting and engaging till Catherine died and then it got to be too much. I still don't understand why people sympathize with the second generation just because they are pulled into Heathcliff's revenge scheme. They are all still pretty awful, and indulge their awfulness.

All of the characters are terrible. That's what makes the novel so original
