What an amazing back story, thank you for sharing
The end of this backstory just broke my heart 😭 He was hurt because he was never asked to participate in group recordings. Just so very sad. RIP Benny. I have this song on a collection of soft rock music. So glad I have it! On a side note: I would trade places with the girl on the carpet in a heartbeat 😉
That was such a wonderful interview! Just wow! Thanks for sharing. 💜
He died??
JayveeTV Wow 😭
BENNY took ALL of us "Into the Night" with THIS song!! Thank you, Benny!
I had the biggest crush on him back in the day! Professor of rock did a an interview with him just days before he died, I was so sad when I saw it.
Benny Mardones was a great talent that was very underrated in my opinion. It is just a haunting song. RIP Benny.
Years ago I left a comment on his Facebook page letting him know his vocal performance on this was one of the most hauntingly beautiful ever and he sent me a really nice DM thanking me. I have always loved this song. To be young again...
It’s about an adult male staking a 16 yr old girl.
Meaningful song....classic...1980
@@leefosh6371 , wrong! Before being a judgmental #@^*, listen to the ACTUAL story behind this song, the video on it was produced by Hollywood not by Benny and is a false depiction of the song...
@Flaísa preach!
@@leefosh6371 I personally don't think it was abt an older man, they probably just had to use him for the music video
One of the most underrated singers from the 80s
The vocals on this song are outrageously good. RIP Benny
RIP Benny. Benny passed away a few weeks ago after a long bout with Parkinson's disease. I lived across from Benny's mom when the lived in Syracuse in the late 80's. His mom was a nice lady. I only ran in to Benny once, and he was real pleasant and down to earth. He had a few other minor hits. Sheila C was one of my favorites.
Yes I just watched some of his recent concerts that were in the last year's. It was so sad to watch. What an amazing song and his amazing voice.
Oh that's so sad...I didn't know that. I have always had a special love for that powerful song. Thank you for that information. RIP Benny....thank you for sharing your gift of song with us.
RIP BENNY!! love this song!!
Great interview with Benny here. th-cam.com/video/EyABE-qjIbI/w-d-xo.html
I miss Benny too. He was a great guy.
I’m old enough to remember when this song hit the charts both times 🤪 Great choice! Great song!
I’m with you! 🤣
I'm old enough as well, but I'll be damned if I remember either appearance on the charts. Would have been around 20 the first time and 29 the second.
Mike Betts mind-altering substances? 🤪
@@aw072 ok, funny. You may not believe it, but I have never been drunk or high in my life, except for the time I took a bit too much Nyquil cold relief medicine back in the early 80's. Yeah, I am one of those "life of the party" types.
Mike Betts 🤣 it’s ok... everybody is different! Embrace what makes you YOU! 🙌🏼✌🏻😁
As someone who graduated in 1984, I can confirm this was played at many dances LOL and yes, the music of the 80s was WONDERFUL ☺️
And a popular dance song in the bars, which I was old enough to attend. 😂
Yes indeed ❤
Yup
There is no doubt that Benny had one of the most amazing voices ever! The song was written about a young teenage girl that lived in Benny's building. She lived with just her father, and one day she came in to say hello to Benny. He was with a friend who commented on how attractive she was. Benny immediately said to him "She's just sixteen years old, leave her alone!" to his friend. The two had a strictly platonic relationship. Benny looked out for her. But the song got some rather rude reviews because some people thought that Benny was talking about having a romantic relationship with a sixteen year old girl. Definitely not true!
Sadly, Benny passed away from Parkinson's Disease on June 29th, 2020. He was 73 years old. Mardones was a great songwriter as well as a singer & performer. In addition to writing his own songs, Benny also wrote songs for many famous artists, including Brenda Lee & Three Dog Night.
RIP Benny...
I just watched the interview in which Benny shared the story of how this song came to be written, which eased my mind about the lyrics. The problem was probably exacerbated by the fact that the official video portrayed an adult man's love for an underage girl. Ugh! Most unfortunate. I feel bad that this fantastic song and phenomenal singer got saddled forever with such a cheesy and misleading video. BTW, did you ever see the video of Benny performing Running Scared at a tribute concert for Roy Orbison? It's amazing!
@@talltulip , thank you for clarifying. I agree the video was in poor, misleading taste. I also know Benny was good friends with Roy and Barbara Orbison...all gone now, RIP.
I’m so glad that you explained this to everyone, I’ve always loved this song, one of my favorites
I never knew the back story to the song. Thank you for that. His voice was AMAZING.!!!
Check out his performance on The MERV GRIFFIN show {a very old talk show for you youngins lol} he sings it live and it is pitch perfect.
🇨🇦 Luv from Canada
Actually, in the interview Benny gave, the father abandoned the family and the girl was alone with her mother and siblings with no means of support. Benny looked out for them. And yes, one day he was with some of his music group working on a song and the girl came over, and Benny helped her with something. She left, and one of the guys remarked about her and that's when Benny said, leave her alone, she's just 16 years old, and the song was born. This was one of those great songs from my youth. R.I.P. Benny, much thanks.
Great song. RIP Benny Mardones.
Yes the true story behind this song will blow your mind. BENNY deserves MAD respect. This song changed Benny life and the family that inspired it as well. Great story.
BENNY was one of those young 70s kids finally breaking through in the 80s. A lot of the young 80s stars fit that same bill.
I've never commented on your channel before, but I just wanna say I love how positive you are. You have such an open mind towards music. Definitely enjoyable to watch!
Renee R thank you
Agree.. He's just a cool kinda person 😎
I agree with Renee
Renee R That’s what I love about JV! 👍👍💖
Yes! For sure! He likes everything. Very uplifting ☺
His voice kicked ass. Sexy & heartbreaking. His belt out words are so awesome. Made me soar singing along. ❤️❤️
benny sang the best love song i ever heard
This guy just passed away like within the last couple weeks but this voice oh my word I’ve seen a lot of people react to him and he is got a beautiful voice
One of my all-time-favourites. It was a hit two times (1980 and 1989). Thanks for sharing it with us.
June 29 he passed at age 73. RIP.
Rest in peace, Benny Mardones... just found out today he passed away a few weeks ago... Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice to the world. May God rest his soul ✝️❤️😢
This song gets me choked up every time I hear it. The Professor of Rock You Tube channel did a video a few days ago in honor of 2 years since Benny passed away and featured an interview with him about this hit.. He called it the most cherished interview he had ever done. Magnificent song and magnificent reaction!
Yes, ive seen that interview yesterday and it explained all about the real story....the girl is called Heidy and was abandoned by her dad and left her with other two kids of 15 and 17. Really sad. You had to watch that interview and discover how Benny made a change in those 3 kids life. RIP dear Benny ❤.
The 80s was the best time to grow up with the Best Music ❤
Yah!!! You finally listen to it!!! I told you that you would LOVE it!! I've been waiting so long!! Thank you so much for reacting to Benny! And people need to read the back story behind the song before making judgements.
As someone who graduated in '89 - the 2nd time the song hit the charts - I can tell you, THIS was the song. OMG, the best!!
This man's voice was truly amazing! He is in a league of the elite singers IMHO
I watched a video interveiw with Benny about this song. Amazing story behind it.
Mardones has explained many times over the years that the song is not statutory or even sexual. While living in New York’s Spanish Harlem in 1979, he was inspired by three teen neighbors whose father had scored a Broadway hit and ran off with a chorus line girl. He offered to help them and their mother with the rent, paying the kids to run errands and clean his apartment; he gave the 16-year-old, a girl named Heidi, $50 a week to walk his dog named Zanky.
“So one night Robert Tepper and I were up writing songs... And in she walks, 16 years old, dressed for school in a miniskirt, little stacked heels, adorable, 16-going-on-21. She said, ‘You’ve been up all night?’ and of course it was obvious. I said, ‘Yeah, we have.’ She says, ‘Okay, come on, Zanky,’ and she walks the dog out. When she leaves and goes out the door, my partner goes, ‘Oh, my God.’ I said, ‘Hey, Bob. She’s just 16 years old, leave her alone.’ And literally five minutes later I said, ‘Play that lick again, Bobby.’ So he played the lick and I went (singing), ‘she’s just 16 years old, leave her alone, they say.’ Then I thought about her dad and what he had done, and that’s where I got ‘Separated by fools who don’t know what love is yet.’ The chorus was, ‘you’re too young for me, but if I could fly, I’d pick you up and take you into the night and show you love like you’ve never seen.’ Then the verse ‘It’s like having it all and letting it show. It’s like having a dream where nobody has a heart. It’s like having it all and watching it fall apart.’ Because his success was not the family’s success; it was just his. ‘I can’t measure my love there’s nothing compared to it’ - it was all about the abandonment of this family and this 16-year-old girl.”
They remained friends for years, sending Christmas cards long after she married and moved to Puerto Rico.
A must watch Benny singing into the night for the last time at turning Rock casino 🎰 he's got parkinsons disease he's hands are shaking and he's just gives it everything and the crowd just go off what a star 🌟 🤩 will always be remembered !
I going to playing this song on repeat for the night lol
I'm about to text this song to my crush.
@@Sagefrakrobatik🤔
I think all elements in this love ballad are just perfectly paired together.
The drums, the piano, the guitar strum and bass , the intricate twinkle sound✨, the vocal harmonies and of course Benny’s ability to tell a story through the passion and conviction of his voice.
The way he takes off in the last quarter is just....goosebumps 🗣🎤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🚀🌛
Beautiful song..& Benny sings it so awesomely. He just passed away recently...RIP, Benny...
Benny was cool and we just lost him recently. 😥 My Mother loved his music! RIP Benny!
Benny Mardones had an incredible voice and he has soul. This is my first time watching your channel but this is one of my all time favorite songs. Thanks for delving into this era. This is a good song from back in my day.
Timeless song! Great vocals! Another one hit wonder, Sniff 'n' the Tears "Driver's Seat"
This was my favorite song of the 80s. Thank you thank you thank you!!
RIP, Benny.
Dude i lisren this song over a 1000 times and never tire of it
One of my favorites at the time. That man could sing!
RIP Benny one of the greatest songs ever by a truly good person. Look at Professor of Rock’s last interview with Benny to find out the real story behind the song 👍
Benny Mardones...R.I.P.
I’m 41 and I have heard this song a million times in the 80’s but I have never seenthis video. I much rather not watch and just listen. Give it another listen without the distraction. Oh and it cut the intro. Great song. The Professor of Rock on YT did a great interview with him before he passed. Check him out. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for clarifying that.
th-cam.com/video/EyABE-qjIbI/w-d-xo.html
Yeah...the video is a bit borderline wrong...makes the age difference too stark but gawd, the song itself..AMAZING!!!!!!!!
love your response to this epic song, your description of his voice
..spot on
I remember this song from 1980, I was 19 and it just gave me that certain feeling deep down that was like a spark igniting a flame. I had forgotten all about it over the years, but when I heard it again today, it was like a rekindling of my memories and emotions from that time. Good songs like this live on forever......
Loved Benny! Such an incredible singer and good person.
This was a very popular dance song in the bars at the time. All the women wanted to dance to this song and they'd seek out a man to dance with if they didn't already have one. Great song during great times!! 😁
This was a skating rink song.
This song shook my heart when I first heard it. I was in High School. The way he sings at the very end of this song crushes me. Wonderful voice. Wonderful song. ,,
I go to this video repeatedly for the comments, so much comedy! Benny BTW did what a lot of singers back then, he sang from a young persons perspective to attract a young audience, he is not professing his love as a late 20's man wanting a 16 year old girl in real life. This song was a monster radio hit.
"When I'm With You" by Sheriff is an awesome one hit wonder that hit the charts twice too
Traci, Freddy Curci was watching the last JV livestream! I know, right?! I had no idea, of course, but mentioned that band and how much I loved that song and singer, as well as the fact the he held the record for the longest note in a top 10 song at the time. He DM’d me and we ended up talking on FaceTime for about 20 mins about Sheriff, his second band Alias, and other 80’s bands. It was an amazing experience! I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and talk to a few of my favorite rockers over the years, but Freddy was the coolest dude. By the way, he can still hit that note! 🙂
@@BluDynamo That's cool!!
@@BluDynamo I used to bartend at an oldies club in Houston. We would have bands come in about every 3 months, and I had the priviledge of partying with Survivor, BTO and Badfinger!! Great memories!
Traci D , that’s amazing!
Yes, yes and yes. More memories
His Father were come from Chile. He were chilean. A great son Bernardo Mardones.
Un abrazo a los chilenos, mi padre también fue chileno 🇨🇱
His name was Ruben.

The best one hit wonder ever! When you do something this beautiful you don't need to do anything else. RIP Benny. 🧡❤
I had not heard this in a long time. Beautiful!
I know I've watched this review a dozen or more times. Benny Mardones sang this song with every ounce of soul he had. And it comes thru. We hear it. We feel it. It takes us away. I will never NOT love this song. RIP Benny. We miss you.
What a voice!
A favorite song 🎵
I danced to this song at many high school dances...memories
Still my jam, all these years later
If you want a 60's One Hit Wonder plus a country music song "Harper Valley PTA" sung by Jennie C. Riley. It was so popular I believe Jennie won a Grammy for it
It was so popular they made a TV movie and then a series starring Barbara (I Dream of Jeannie) Eden.
@@kev7161 I forgot about that
@@kev7161 lol yes i used to watch all of that stuff 😉😉 it was on NBC
That song reminds me of my small southern hometown. Things like that really do happen. It's hilarious.
I love that song! It's just so bitingly _snarky_ and satisfying, especially if you've known (about) people like that yourself. I even put it on my '60s playlist thingie I made on TH-cam. :)
I always kinda wanted to dress a Sim in late '60s clothes and have her yell and wave her finger in the face of the private school principal, to go with that song. But I never got around to it. XD
Do “Hot Child In The City”. Crazy video but great song..
Yes- I’ve suggested that one today too!
I love that one!
For sure!!!
And also pervy.

Benny Mardones lived in an apartment complex. He had a neighbor who was a struggling set creator on broadway. The family had come upon some tough times and had very little. When the father made it big, rather then help out the family he moved off with a 24 year old girl who was in the shows choir. One day the families 3 little kids came up to his door and began to cry, they told Benny that their Dad had left them. Benny told them that they would get through it. Benny created odd jobs for them throughout his apartment. The young boy would run out and get cigarettes for Benny and keep the change from 20$. The one girl would clean Benny's apartment for 50$ a week. The final daughter, 16 years old, would come over in the morning and let Benny's dog out. The 16 year old girl came in when he was writing the song. She came in after a night of writing and she came in to walk his dog. His partner with whom he was writing the song the song said "Oh wow," regarding how good looking she was for a 16 year old. Benny then said said "She's just 16 years old, just leave her alone." Straight from Benny's mouth. It was a great story.
This song has been requested over
4,500,000 times!
And Benny waa referred to as "The Voice" since this hit came out. What a TALENT!!
I keep getting the CHILLS when I listen to it. And I first heard it in 1989 during its comeback.
Great songs today! I love the choices, all greats. Nice job! You are going to become a TH-cam legend J! One hit Wonders Wednesdays, love it!
Love this song so beautiful What a voice one of a kind
The negative connotations are definitely understandable given things these days. That aside, I still adore this song. Benny HAD SOME pipes on him - the passion in his vocals was just amazing.
This song was one of my picks for you. Gets to my heart and soul every time I hear it. Amazing 🤩 love your reaction!
Would you consider Todd Rundgren hello it's me. He has other hits as well. Very good 👍👍
Yes.
Good song. "I Saw the Light" is good too.
Great songs!
I wanna give this review 10 Thumbs UP!!
He just passed away a couple days ago. Great song. I remember this when I was a kid in 1980. That ending gives me cold chills...always did!! LOL
RIP Benny...he just died a few weeks ago...
I have always loved this his voice brings me peace ❤❤❤❤
Benny Mardones died on June 29, 2020, complications from Parkinson disease.
That brought tears to my eyes, I didn’t know he passed, my mom loved this song and she passed the same day he did 💔😭
here's a great 1 hit wonder, maybe for next week. the band's name is Sheriff, the song is " when i'm with you ". it always amazed me that they came up with such a classic and then never came close to matching it.
Yes a brilliant singer. It's said he just passed away July 29 2020. I love this song so much. His voice is amazing. Yes it was very popular. There is documentaries on you tube. Check it out.
❤️ Love this song ❤️ So sad he passed away a month ago 😢 RIP BENNY
I also want to say that I’m so happy that a lot of you young guys and gals are actually listening to older music. This is talent! There was no computerized help here. I’m proud to see that some are interested in the great ones. ❤️
Great song I remember this both times . Great reaction Jay. Looking forward to next Wednesday
Very nice very smooth 😊😊💖💙
Killer vocals and haunting instrumentals for a song about a grown ass man obsessed with a 16 year old girl.
WRONG Feinstein.
The video looks totally different from the backstory.
Thank you for reviewing this one of the most beautiful songs ever made RIP Benny 💓
One of my all time favorites! This song hits all the right notes for a teenage girl (or an old 80's girl, like me :D )
He did a good job on this song.
“Tainted love” by Soft Cell- PLEASE make it the long version (which is not too long) there is a short version that cuts out SO MUCH goodness! Good DJ’s would do the full version back in the day- then some would stop right when it get better- has ALWAYS driven me nuts! Great song when played in full! ❤️💛☮️💟✌️
Good song but have you listened to The version by Gloria Jones an American in 1965 it represents a movement in England called Northern Soul or Rare Soul.
Yes I knew you'd love it He was my favorite ! Yes!
I totally forgot about one other one hit wonder that is considered by many to be a generational anthem for the 60s:
San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair) - Scott McKenzie (1967)
That one sort of encapsulated the idea of peace and love espoused during the 1960s.
BTW...I’ve also seen his last name spelled slightly different like this: MacKenzie.
- David
i used to fall asleep with those big headphones on listening to these hits lol.
RIP Benny🙏🏻
I just subscribed, really appreciate you giving Benny Mardones such solid props. I grew up with this song and I always loved it when it was played on the radio.
"Never run, never hide." Benny Mardones
Love this song 💝
I just rediscovered this song that I loved back when it was first released. I’ve listened to it again now dozens of tie - his voice is absolutely amazing and gives me chills.
Awesome smile keep going and thank you so much
One of a kind Greatness!!!God Bless your soul Benny!
This video has nothing to do with what this song is really about! I fell in love with Benny back I The 80’s and wore out 3 of his wonderful cassette tapes! I listened to his songs over and over. In the Vietnam war, he sang to his fellow soldiers, and he brought him so much joy! They called him the “Voice”! RIP beloved Benny.😢
A 60's one hit wonder is Nancy Sinatra's These Boots are Made for Walking. She is Frank Sinatra's daughter.
Class of ‘91 here and I can tell you this was a played in High School dances and I would sing it to my girlfriend while we danced. We were together for years and this song reminds me of first love and growing up in the 80’s. God I miss that world. Rest in peace Benny.
So smooth. Vocals really good. Idc whut the semantics were.
That was a great song 👍
Love your commentary and your enthusiasm for the artists!!!
Every time I hear the line "Show you love like you have never seen" I get creeped out. I like the advice in the first verse.
Esta cancion tiene toda la fuerza de un sentimiento, me quedo sin palabras
I used to sing loud in my car to this song! The ending gives me goosebumps with his voice! Love it! 💖💞✌
R.I.P. Benny for leaving such beautiful love song with such masterful vocals. The song will stand the test of time for sure
Powerful, raw vocals, amazing song. Rest easy Benny

I Will Follow Him - Peggy March (1963)
Rhythm Of The Rain - The Cascades (1963)
500 Miles (Away From Home) - Bobby Bare (1963)
I believe virtually all of these qualify as “one hit wonders” but there might be a few that stray from that classification. If a few of those sneaked in....sorry about that!
Regarding your question a few videos ago about whether you should use the studio version or a live version. My vote would be as follows: studio version.
Reason being: if you want to experience any given song as close to the way all of us experienced it for the first time, then the studio version is what we all heard first. Remember, back in the 60s everyone first heard music on the radio, and then we would go out to buy LP record albums or 45 rpm records. In either case, it was always the studio version. At some point afterwards we might then see a given band perform live on TV on a show like American Bandstand or the Ed Sullivan Show (a variety show that aired on Sunday nights).
Anyway, that’s all I’ve got to say this time around. Hope this list is of use to you.
- David
Regarding your list, Runaround Sue was by Dion, who had multiple hits. Del Shannon sang Runaway, which was his only #1, but he placed others in the top five.
And Bobby Bare's #1 hit was Marie Laveau in 1974. 500 Miles from Home only peaked at #10
I would recommend the 11 minute version of Time Has Come Today by The Chambers Brothers.
