JS Bach / András Schiff, 1982: Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D Minor BWV 903a - Decca D275D 2

The Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in D minor, BWV 903, is a work for harpsichord by Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach probably composed it during his time in Köthen from 1717 to 1723. The piece was already regarded as a unique masterpiece during his lifetime. It is now often played on piano.

Stunning performance!! David has posted many recordings.
(Thank you!) Each of which differs from the others in their characterization of the piece; borne of a deep musicianship which gives the pianist a place in the remarkable cache of breathtaking sound -- responding to what they hear in the score. Schiff's Fantasia is musically facile. Nuanced and beautifully quiet at times where others run loudly slipshod -- seemingly seeking a strong (loud) opening to their Fantasia which oft comes across overblown and formless. I've not heard an interpretation clumsily described on this channel. Schiff plays the inner voices to their fullest whilst the incessant running in the background is just that -- background. Let's see what the Fuga brings us

I hadn't heard this performance of his before. Wonderful interpretation. The voices in the fugue are beautifully defined. An absolute joy to listen to while reading the music.
