    Glad that Sony remembered they still have some APS-C cameras. This APS-C lens refresh was much needed! These new lenses should do well on the A7IV for 4K60 (crop mode) and all the APS-C Sony cameras. I'm glad the lens is quite sharp across the frame. Waiting forward for the upcoming reviews for the 15mm F1.4 and the 10-20 PZ Sony announced today :) Thanks Chris!

    Some people show in internet that you can use it directly on full frame camera to record vidéo in K4 24p with the crop of active stabilisation.
    at 0:30, you showed the image in full frame mode, so if you shoot square image (1:1 ratio) it looks very nice.
    Can you tell us if you crop to have a correct 3:2 ratio, what's the focal length equivalent ? (12mm 13mm 14mm or more ?)
    my real question is, is it wider than FE14GM F1.8 ?
    Happy End Year!

    Also where the drop on price on existing?
    I took the risk of buying a third party (Sigma) tele (150-600) knowingly I won't get teleconverters, but who needs teleconverters when I could re-use all my lenses on an APS-C?
    Except Sony APS-C bodies are very expensive, and old. Common guys, sigma and samyang already put there a ton of good APS-C lenses, it's easy money.

    Does it make sense to buy this lens for a full-frame body like Sony A7 IV? It feels more attractive than Sony GM 14mm f/1.8. I'll get a wider field of view, but will I regret my choice due to other characteristics? Sony GM 14mm seems better, but I have a lot temptation to get a 11mm lens even while I have to reduce the resolution.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How exactly would you get a wider field of view? This lens only works on APS-C, meaning an equivalent of a full frame 16.5mm lens. The Sony 14mm f/1.8 is optically superior in every way while also being a wider field of view when used on a full frame camera.

    • @tshev
      @tshev 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechnoBabble I would assume it will work in APS-C mode. I'll have ~14MP image versus 33MP in full-frame mode, but a wider field of view because 11mm is wider than 14mm.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tshev 11mm on full frame is indeed wider than 14mm when on the same sensor size. But you're talking about 11mm on APS-C/with an APS-C crop compared to 14mm on full frame. Using Sony's 11mm APS-C lens you will not get a wider field of view than the 14mm full frame lens.

    • @tshev

      Because it allows for better overall image quality. You can fix distortion, even pretty bad distortion like on this lens, without a massive loss in image quality. But you can't fix a lens being soft or having bad autofocus. Sony played their cards right here, the lens is sharp, fast, has good autofocus, low field curvature, and low CA, and inexpensive compared to full frame or even Sony's own APS-C ultrawide zooms.

    It's starting to feel like a joke at this point with the distortion on some lenses. I get it. They're affordable compared to other options. And some people actually like shooting in RAW with more affordable gear. Sony APS-C cameras are comically small as is. Letting the camera or editing software handle the distortion to make the lens smaller is just plain lazy in my book. It makes it feel like they just want someone to see what happens when they decide to shoot RAW and almost force them to upgrade, or they're banking on people buying this to never shoot in RAW.
    I hope the other new lenses aren't like this.

      Some have said that this lens should be good for buildings and architecture photography so it might be wide enough for landscape and the close-up ability looks great with nice blurry backgrounds. Hope this helps.

    At $550, it's still a little expensive for most apsc users who would spend less than $1k on a camera body. I'd go with Samyang 12 f/2.

      A good lens will always outlive a camera body. Spend your money on lenses.
      Update to my comment, I got to test the Sony 11mm against the Samyang 12mm. The Samyang is noticeably worse in every possible way, spend the extra on Sony.

      @varnamq3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sony's horrible 16-50mm kit lens is around £270 if bought by an unsuspecting person, the 16-50mm is a lens which is normally sold with the A5100 and makes the buyer feel inferior about the camera where as it is the lens which is not doing justice to the camera. So you won't find any GOOD lens from sony below 270

    Great lens! Hopefully, something like this (ie 16mm f2.5 or 2.8) will get released for full-frame as well. Currently, the best option for a small/light/affordable but still high-performing lens is Samyang 18mm F2.8, which is not as wide as this Sony, and image quality seems to favor Sony slightly as well.

      If you're doing video you might want to still consider the a74 with this lens. Both the a74 and zve-10 will have lots of rolling shutter in 4K, but the big difference is the a74 can punch into APSC mode to have a faster readout, while still having 60fps and 10 bit options the zve-10 lacks
