  • Husking (or knitting) boards are becoming more and more popular for quilling, but it can be tricky to find any info on how to actually use one. In this video, I'm demoing a few easy designs for the basics of using a quilling husking board, including a 3-color flower petal.

    I used to quill a lot and enjoyed this relaxing craft. At that time I bought all the tools available at the time . . Then I had two babies that took me away from quilling.I also was working full time.
    Now my boys are grown with families of their own. I have done a lot of sewing, knitting and quilting but now in this time of Covid I found all my quilling supplies and I am enjoying getting back. Now I have the room, that I can work for hours without having to put it away at the end.
    Thank you so much.

    When you were playing around with the shape on the back of the package and showed the flat piece on top, to me it looked like it needed a yellow Oval with the bottom flattened and then glued, centered on the flat part of the green. Sort of a beehive looking flower.
    I have regular hulking tool but mine doesn't have that bottom part. I am going to look for one like yours.
    Looks like it made great pine needles for Xmas!

    I am 48 next week and remember quilling at primary school, also I remember getting wooden tools one Christmas when I was very young. Something I wish I had kept hold of; to be honest I think my sister took them when my mum passed away thinking they were hers. I am trying to relearn Quilling now as it has been some time and I find myself in need of activity (I am on end of life and currently stuck in bed), your channel has been the best for me and I appreciate what you upload. I forgot how this was done so I'm back for a second time. I found I had much better luck if I put a drop of glue at the bottom of each round. I tried using the husking board on the bottom part but that was a disaster. However, I did finally find a way to do it. That center slot going down is pretty wide. So, I folded a long strip and laid it in the slot. Then I cut pieces for the sides. On each piece, I used my tweezers and bent the end downward just a wee bit. Then, I dipped that into a little glue (the bent part) and slid it into place with the bent part facing downward. I repeated this for the other side. That center slot lets you put 4 pieces in it so with the stem and the little bend on each branch, that made 4 pieces. I let it dry and then used my sharp tool to lift it out and it was perfect. Then I tried the same thing manually. That came out even better. The little bent piece was large enough to glue and stick to the center strip. BTW, I love your tutorials. They come right to the point. Thanks for that!

    Thanks for showing this. To be honest, the husking board seems more cumbersome to me. I can imagine pegs slipping out and my husking ending up in a big mess. 😒 My concern has been that the pegs might fit too loosely in the holes.
    This video has convinced me to stick with my comb, crimper and template for making different sized circles and shapes. 😊 Not using a husking board might be "limiting my quilling", but, after seeing all what you do with the needle tool, slotted tool, and comb, that has been good enough for me.☺️

    • @ThePaperyCraftery
      @ThePaperyCraftery  ปีที่แล้ว

      The pegs do come out at times and that is annoying. I don’t use a husking board often but it can be helpful at times. The most important thing is that you enjoy quilling in the way that’s most comfortable to you!

      I would roll my strip around a needle tool a few times to make the anchor that way, then slide it onto one of the regular pegs. It may be tricky to get your shape started so you’ll have to hold it so it doesn’t unroll. But once you’ve made a pass or two around the starting peg, it should hold itself.

    • @ThePaperyCraftery
      @ThePaperyCraftery  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s what I would try, but you would probably still have to hold the roll in place as you weave around the other pegs or it could come off easily. Was the brand you purchased supposed to come with slotted pegs? If so, you may want to exchange it for another.

    The pin holes…will they show on the finished project?

    • @ThePaperyCraftery
      @ThePaperyCraftery  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been getting this question a lot lately. I think it's definitely something I need to clear up! As far has the pins go, when you're building your quilling on top of wax paper with pins to keep it in place, you're not using your final surface at all. The pin holes will only be in the wax paper and any template you're using with your cork board. The idea is to remove your quilling from the wax paper when you're done and mount it on what ever you like - paper, mat board, etc. For more information, check out the ending of this video 👉 th-cam.com/video/reK84MjbMiE/w-d-xo.html The last 5 minutes or so shows how to remove quilling from wax paper and remove any excess dried glue before mounting it.

      @@ThePaperyCraftery thank you…I’m familiar with this part…I make a lot of things, but I’ve never outlined letters. So the letters would be done the same way and then placed on your final project? (I meant for this question to be on a different project.)

    • @ThePaperyCraftery
      @ThePaperyCraftery  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Got it. This is the process I use for all my outlines. I used to sell custom monograms where I would use a large printed letter as the template under my wax paper, make the outline from double-thick strips, then fill it in with quilling. Some quillers prefer to just form their project right on their finished surface, but I prefer to be able to correct my mistakes. I hope this helps.
