I really appreciate the part contrasting tactical backpacks vs hiking backpacks. This pack from SOG seems like they fairly successfully pulled off a hybridization of the two concepts. I love it!
Had this bag. Loved: hard shell lid, 4 zipper system, all the grab handles. Hated: the molle is the wrong direction for backpacking (which is when you’d use it) and the hard shell top opens the wrong direction for as a duffel bag (opens underneath in that configuration so everything falls out). Because there were serious flaws no matter how you used it, I returned it. Both one of the best thought out and least thought out bags I ever owned
Gilbert Kelty Redwing 50 is a so much better option than this SOG, not just for the price but for the capacity vs weight ratio. Plus kelty bag is very durable.
I just got mine yesterday I only payed 149 free shipping on amazon I was blown away over looking it last night. You can totally use as a bug out bag as well it’s crazy
Good review. I wish it had side water bottle place holders. Also the outside of the pack has columns of 3 molle attachments, most the organizers attach by 2 molle strips so it will be off center if used (minor nit pick but I like things centered and I like pockets). Otherwise it is a slick backpack.
I'm partial to the Mystery Ranch 3DAP, but this is significantly less costly and I would certainly look closely at this pack should I need another one - it seems well organized and lightweight. Thanks for the review!
Great review on a NICE backpack! I've now started looking into smaller day hike SOG packs! :) I live in Gatlinburg TN, these would be perfect for day and overnight hikes in the Park. Thanks for shooting your footage in the field...
I made the mistake of buying those "cool tactical" looking backpacks that turned out to be heavy and not suitable for long distance travel. This is a nice pack because it is a mid-weight hiking style backpack. Cons: Needs airflow on the back padding. Price.
Always liked that style but you have to check the fit. Without an adjustable torso length you could be carrying all shoulders. Looks like a great pack if it fits.
Great review on the SOG Prophet 33! I will definitely check this one out, however, at nearly 70 I would like to see a little more capacity, say, 50 liters. Strangely enough I found a SOG at a Marshall's that I've used on many hiking/backpacking trips and I love it. My Marpat ILBE is too much on weekenders but superb on long trips. My SOG is incredible and after adding three smaller matching Fieldline bags to the outer mollies, Brother, talk about organization and "attitude." Being retired military SOG is at the forefront of my preferences in survival gear. Thanks again for a great video and I look forward to checking out all of other ones.
This is the comfiest back pack. I can easily carry 25lbs in it and doesn’t feel like carrying anything like it. So well organised makes a carry effortless
I'm with you on the lack of a water bottle pouch. It annoyed me at first when I purchased this bag, but I found an easy and cheap solution. If you're using a nalgene or any bottle with a loop, attach it with a carabiner. So it's not swaying everywhere when im walking, I'll usually tuck it in to one of the side compression flaps with the carabiner attached to the top strap.
This backpack is perfect for hiking. It has so many pockets to carry everything and a lot of space. I don't think it it that great for traveling because this pack is mostly used for hunting or hiking so keep that in mind. It's more of like a one to two day backpack so if you're trying to pack a lot clothes it will take up too much space other than that it's a great pack. Worth the money
Looks like a really well thought out pack. I've used the day pack and the Op Ord pack and they are both good packs as well. So overall I am very impressed with SOG packs.
This bag is, imo, not in any way optimized for actual hikes, like a few hundred kilometers(same in miles). In my experience, a bag such as this great for SAR, hunting, fishing, small trips of max 50 km(30 miles). Taking on a serious hike with this would in most climates be too hot since it would stick your back, it weighs you back since it's very deep and it's really bulky and not very light. For distance hikes or difficult trail hikes, i would go for an Osprey, Bergans, Lowe Alpine or something custom made instead.
This bag could be great, but there are a few problems. The molle is 90 degree the wrong way (all SOG’s other bags have it correctly) so if you attach anything for backpack carry, it will be 90 degrees the wrong direction. I contacted SOG asking them why and they said it's because "it's meant to be primarily used as a DUFFLE BAG". Ok, right. If that's so, then why does the clamshell pocket on top open from the BOTTOM when used as a duffle bag. In other words, if you use this as a duffle bag, opening the hard top pocket, the only way you can, from the bottom, means all your things inside come pouring out. So obviously this was meant to be a BACKPACK first, because then the hardtop pocket works fine correctly. SO......use as a backpack and the molle is unusable, use as a duffle bag and the main hard top pocket is unusable. PROS: 1) . The 4 zippers on the main compartment is great, so you can access the main pocket from the side. Good design 2) . Zippers are smooth. Seems like a no-brainer, but it really isn't. Even my vanquest zippers catch sometimes, but these are good. 3) Love the flap/wing design 4) Like the hard clamshell top design 5) The internal daisy chain is a nice feature, though maybe not the most necessary 6) LOVE the way this bag LOOKS. Might be my favorite in terms of aesthetics. CONS 1) . Molle is the wrong way if you use as a backpack 2) . Hard clamshell top opens the wrong way if you use as a duffle (from the bottom, spilling all your contents every time you open), so no matter how you use this pack, a major feature will not work properly 3) Poor back padding. It feels "okay" when you're using it, but then when you put on any other pack with GOOD back padding, you'll really notice the difference. I think SOG didn't give good padding on the back so it is flatter when using as a duffle, but could have done better than THIS, as the backpack suffers (and a backpack is probably how it will most often be used) 4) Lack of any way to adjust for torso length 5) No attachment points on the BOTTOM of the pack. This would be an EASY fix 6) No bottle holders. This is probably because the wings/flaps are in the way, but with the molle the wrong direction, attaching a bottle holder will ALSO be the wrong the direction (horizontal to the ground), so unusable. You won't have any water bottle access with this bag 7) Waist straps need more than one line of attachment. Anything you attach to your waist strap will flop around, unlike other bags with several lines of attachment to weave through FIXES: 1) rotate the molle on the flaps/wings 90degrees so what we lose with the flaps/wings, can be made up for with attachments while using as a backpack 2) . MUCH better back padding 3) Make it torso adjustable 4) Add attachments points on the bottom 5) Add another line of molle "weave" on the hip straps so attachments don't flop with every step 6) High vis interior lining BOTTOM LINE: Lots of GREAT design ideas, coupled with POOR design ideas. Talking to SOG, got BS answers from them, so not sure I'd trust in their thought process if they aren't willing to accept real world feedback, but just make excuses which are lame (like it's meant primarily as a duffle, which I explained earlier why it could not have been designed that way - smartly anyways)
Excellent review Brother! That pack does look like it has a lot of great features. I see a lot of similarities in terms of organization with my Vertx Gamut but I do wish that pack had a hip belt like this SOG. I love the internal mesh pockets. I dunno what it is, but that logo SOG uses with the skull wearing the beret just looks soooo cheesy to me. Anyway, I hope they'll send you some more packs man!
Hey Tim.Great review. Question. What's the capacity of this bag? Can it hold cloths for a 3-4 days travel? Maybe 4 changes of jeans, plus shirts, toiletries, etc? Also, can you compare this one with the Maxpedition Fliegerduffle? Do you know if it's about the same size? This one looks like an awesome bag. I just need one that's gonna give me enough room to carry 3-4 days worth of clothing.
The material looks flimsy, no different than all the other hiking packs out there, they just added a bit of tactical to it. I'm a cordura or ballistic nylon fan, like Vanquest or Maxpedition. I know light is what hikers want, but id rather have a little more weight, and a bomb proof pack. I saw the SOG video, and they also did not mention the material. In most videos that's one thing of the first thing they talk about. They must not want you to know, also checked Amazon, no mention of the material, I'm assuming its regular nylon.
I really like this pack, but SOG puts their name and that stupid skull logo all over their products. I'd be embarrassed carrying that through the airport because of that giant skull and beret.

I think you're spot on with your comments on picking a hiking style pack. I chose the kelty redwing 50 for my bug out bag.
Gilbert Kelty Redwing 50 is a so much better option than this SOG, not just for the price but for the capacity vs weight ratio. Plus kelty bag is very durable.
Maybe, but this pack has a lot of amazing convenience features that look really nice to have. Whoever designed this pack really thought it through
Skunkofoot agreed
I just got mine yesterday I only payed 149 free shipping on amazon I was blown away over looking it last night. You can totally use as a bug out bag as well it’s crazy

Nice presentation showing the inside.

Good review Tim. Awesome pack. I like the horizontal grab handle😀
Agreed - that's win for sure.
OK... it is pricy but I like it so much that I went ahead and pulled the trigger and bought it.

Where's the place to put water bottles?
Beauty of molle. That aside plenty of room inside. Or top. Or bottom. Or side

How does it handle rain? It doesn't come with a raincover, does it?
Very clever..
Thanks, I've been waiting on your review on this. Good video.
frosty13 glad to help out.
Great bag but is too damn expensive. I prefer the Osprey Porter 46L instead
Great review
William Parker thanks William.
Good video. Awesome pack as well.
Thanks - and yes, great pack indeed.
Wish they put a place for a water bottle
I wish there was maybe a water bottle pouch on one side
Is this waterproof?
good review....good looking bag. but over 200 is pretty pricey.
Good review.
SUNCHIP2007 thank you.

Shout out to Dana Designs!
Good job. That is a really nice bag, out of my price range but never the less a nice bag.
Why are the Molly slots running side ways?
Patrick Fealy it’s set up that way to run straps through it to hold gear to the side - like a fly rod for example
@@EverydayTacticalVids
I have some halikon Molly pouches . I can run them sidways

It really all depends on how you pack - I would use this for a 3-day trip in the summer but not in the winter.
EverydayTacticalVids thank you for your reply.
Great looking pack. But $230 bucks is just too pricey for me.
Was interested until I heard the price!!!! It looks great but I will just have to stay with my old Alice pak.
Thank you. You just saved me 15 minutes, saw 240 and know no point in watching a video about a bag I'd never pay that much for.
just got it for 142.
Neat, however.... I called SOG today and they are out of stock until August 2017.....
What do you mean?? It's really good looking bag😎
Awesome video, much appreciated. How would this hold up to the vanquest IBEX 30, in your opinion ?
How well does the pack cinch down when partially filled? It doesn't look like it would work well for this use case.
Matt Klapman actually pretty well - good question though and I agree , if I didn't own it I would think the same thing.
Will this hold ar15 that folds?
grate video bro
Say Heah Tim, Happy Thanksgiving. ,, .
paulie 4x you too!
Thanx You. ,, .
What's it made off
can this bag be carried on a plane
Wish it was coyote tan
Definitely!

JBdrum Outdoors 500d nylon
Great review, Tim. Awesome looking pack, but $229?? That is WAAAAAAAAAAAY over-priced!
Yeah - i'ts not cheap but a great pack.
EverydayTacticalVids Looks like it. I love the MOLLE webbing in the main compartment. If only it was $100 cheaper!
класс
It is over priced..but Ill end up getting it in a few months..
Cool but not $230+ cool.
for $230 you can get a better full suspsension more padding on the waste belt. this pack is for more urban wanna be outdoors man
I really like this pack, but SOG puts their name and that stupid skull logo all over their products. I'd be embarrassed carrying that through the airport because of that giant skull and beret.
