What you do is so much more accurate than all the costume designers on the current costume drama series because NONE of them do the undergarments properly so the silhouette is always always too modern, they skip at LEAST three or four layers underneath that would in fact have been worn, your a marvelous costume designer I LOVE your work !

I absolutely love this video! My thesis for college was about the evolution of bathing suits during the 20th century and I would have LOVED to have this video as a part of the information about the practice of beach-going prior to the 1900s. It would have made a world of a difference.
Thanks so much for all the dedication you put into your productions. It was great that we got to see how light the fabric for the jacket was… small details that make a world of a difference.

Bathing suits made of wool makes sense; you won't get the same cold and wet feeling as with, say, cotton. Although it will absorb a lot of water and become very heavy.

There are times when I (kind of) wish we still adhered to the old styles; love the esthetic, but then I realise just how TRAPPED ladies were in all those layers of clothes. Having worn corsets upon occasion, I cannot imagine wearing one while swimming, as taking a deep breath is impossible, and adequate breathing with true exertion, also impossible!!
Thank you, and Chris, for making/uploading this video.

Ahhh, I wear a modern take of the corset under my one piece actually and its no prob at all. I'm not even aware of it. I can stay at the pool for hours, gettting in and out etc. Totally unaware of my modern 'corset'. I was a champion swimmer in my distant school days too. I can swim under water for metres in my swim corset. Then I wear a type of v light longline jacket over it for sun protection. I swim in this too. I'm an Aussie, the sun here is a shocker. I'm lucky I live next door to our local pool too and its 40+ in Melbourne today, so v handy indeed.

A properly fitted corset shouldn't restrict breathing! When people wore corsets regularly they would be made for their body and properly fitted as well as properly laced. Unfortunately nowadays most people don't know how to properly fit or lace a corset so they seem much more uncomfortable than they need to be! I think that she has a video on this channel showing all the things you can do in a corset including sport!

This has been bugging me for a while... why were buttons so popular on boots instead of laces? Aren't laces more versatile and easier to adjust for different feet and different people wearing the shoe? (I guess this didn't happen in upper classes, but there was a lot of regifting to sisters, maids... and the children who are growing fast)
All the clothing was made to be adjustable for pregnancy and comfort, why not shoes?

I wish I knew the freaks who give you thumbs down for your excellent work. Jealousy, I believe. Regarding the summer outfits: there were so many layers that no matter how thin the fabric, they did sweat buckets in hot weather and there was no deodorant. Thankfully the natural fibers sponged off the worst. Still, combined with the horse manure everywhere, the streets in hot weather did smell a lot. I know that I'm pissing into the pink champagne of the Victorian era lovers, but life was not only tea cozies and lace gloves.

Place the crinoline and all the skirts going over it down on the ground, step in the middle and lift them all at once. Of course fastening them in the order you would normally. As always, your videos are fabulous! My five-year-old daughter loves watching them with me. She was shocked to see how much clothing women used to wear swimming, and I must admit, I thought historical swim wear would have been far more restrictive to actual swimming, but these were actually functional outfits!
Now for a tangent! I have a quick question about corsets on large busted women. How supportive is a corset likely to be on a woman who wears an F or G-cup, for instance? Are there extant corsets that were made for very large busted women? Do they differ dramatically in pattern? I would love to make and wear corsets, but the necessity of self-patterning or dramatically altering an extant pattern are intimidating!

@@priorattire Oh excellent! I'll have to do some investigation on which pattern might be the best to jump off from. Thank you!

All jokes aside, a slightly modified version of the bathing suit might be a good way to not get sunburned this summer here in Australia...
And that sporting corsetooks like it would work for when I actually can get back to archery again...

Love watching your videos! Any chance you can one day recreate what a fashionable lord and lady would wear in the Caribbean?

I just started wearing a corset three days ago and i forgot about boots before corset. my boots were zip up and it was still hard
    Edit:
I also wore a tank top instead of a t-shirt (as my modern chemise) and got deodorant marks on my dark blue corset -_-

This is so satisfying to watch! I've always had a big dream about trying on a 'real' Victorian outfit (it's even on my bucketlist) since I've always had a big fascination about fashion history, so thank you for making these videos, they're very educational to watch as well!
