Kiritsugu did love and care for irisviel and treated better than anyone would ever will after all the choice to have illya was theirs. He chose to teach her about the world and spend those years with her. Kiritsugu seemed more distant and cold to her in Zero because he needed to steel himself for the grail war. To desensitize himself from his emotions, to return to the killer he once was.
