  • In the last video I repaired this 1969 (or thereabouts) Singer Friden calculator with a Nixie Tube display. In this video I'll demonstrate finished calculator, showing the basic mathematics functions plus a few of it's more quirky features. This Singer Friden calculators was made in Japan by Hitachi, and there would also have been a Hitachi branded model available.
    We'll answer the all important question, "what happens if you divide by zero?" and at the end of the video I'll take a closer look at those beautiful nixie tubes.

      Cheers upir, the nixie tubes look so good close up don't they - a really great bit of old tech.
      Cheers for watching and commenting.

    Nice modern pocket calculator, did you nip down to woolies to buy it especially for this video?
    Thanks for the close up on the tubes, I'll check the other video out, quite remarkable.

      Awdrey, Can you tell me how to calibrate my radiac?

    • @GrumpyTim
      @GrumpyTim  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oooh yes, I just popped into Woolies and got their smallest pocket calculator - it only takes 4 "C" cells to power it!!!!!!! Those nixie tubes are so sexy - and kind of hypnotic to look at too.
      Although those AWDREY machines were originally intended for a somewhat sombre purpose, they're still a really cool bit of historic equipment - and they look impressive and understated at the same time.

      @@GrumpyTim do you have an awdrey machine? I just wondered why you typed it at the end. I have never seen one, the field equipment is always what gets me excited, my radiac is relitively modern but still nice and chunky, machined access panels in the aluminum case and such, I wanted something older with a bit of chrome and a round dial but they have become quite collectable and so demand more than I was willing to pay.
      I went looking at your other videos for the detailed explanation of the tubes, couldn't find it and got sidetracked by your music slightly, 70's detective show is an absolute peach mate.

      No, I haven't got an AWDREY, I think they're all in captivity, or at least in bunkers/museums - I just started adding a bit of pointless but maybe vaguely interesting information, such as the odd acronym , at the end of the videos to see if a few more people would stay to the end - no idea if it makes any difference at all. I think all the old gear like your preferred radiac has become more desirable these days - there's plenty of stuff I should have bought years ago, because I simply can't afford it now.
      Thinking about it, I only explained a little bit more about the Nixie tubes in the video I did about the Monroe 620 th-cam.com/video/00vAkeb3cb0/w-d-xo.html and probably the only additional info is that they're filled with a low pressure gas (neon and maybe a dash of something else), and they need around 100 to 150 volts to operate. I also put a link to Dalibor Farny's channel where he makes brand new nixie tubes th-cam.com/video/wxL4ElboiuA/w-d-xo.html - well worth a watch if you haven't already seen it. From the viewing numbers, I don't think my music is that popular, but at least I should never get a copyright strike!!!!!! I spent so much time listening to the themes from Starsky and Hutch, The Professionals and so on trying to come up with something that sounded like it belonged in the 70s when I wrote that track - I really should write/record some new stuff, but it takes so long, or at least it does the way I do it!!!!

      @@GrumpyTim @GrumpyTim pointless but vaguely interesting? So I've been looking for the cryptic messages in your test numbers for no reason? Balls.
      Need to go and have a look at these tubes being made, thanks for the link.
      Man, your constant striving for perfection sounds as tormenting as my daydreaming and starting 10 new projects for every one I finish.
      The thumbnails/sleeves are brilliant. Where was I going is a favorite, I like the tune as well as the alegro, felt like I was listening to riders on the storm for the first time again, trippy!
      Faceted talent my friend, I feel slightly awestruck.

    Interesting demonstration. I wonder who designed the calculator?

    • @GrumpyTim
      @GrumpyTim  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ben, I'm guessing there was a team at Hitachi who did the whole design, from electronics to case design. As far as I know Singer Friden just had their name badges applied because the exterior is identical to the Hitachi branded sibling. I think Friden were a long established brand so people would be happy to continue buying their products, whereas they'd have been "Hitachi who????" if someone had tried to sell them a Hitachi machine.

      Hi ohjajohh, the one lens I use for my videos that isn't vintage, is my Samyang 100mm f2.8 ED UMC Macro - it's an awesome lens, and it's that one I used for the close up shots of the nixie tubes.
