They tried out cute concepts and stuff they were just kind of derping around instead of having a clear plan from the beginning. Imagine if Devil would have been CLCs debut song they would have blown up. Why? Because in that song and MV it comes across very learly what this group is about what kind of music they want to make, their style, their identity. But it took years until they released that song and in this business that's too long. To break through to the mainstream is quite hard for idol groups in Korea, most people who don't follow Kpop only know a handful of groups. To capture the attention of people who don't care about idols it really takes a lot, you need to make use of every moment. The best case is if you hit it big right from the debut. If you don't you have 2-3 years to make the breakthrough and then it's pretty much over you're never going to grow your fanbase bigger than it is because there's too many new groups. There are very few exceptions like N'UEST who got boosted by produce 101 or EXID where a fancam blew up and made them more popular but those are the exceptions. The rule is you're not going to make it big if it's not soon. You have to tell the people what you're about from the beginning and make an impact. I feel like CUBE realised that and learned something from it and that's why GIDLE is so popular now because their first MV was full of their identity and it made a splash. In a way they partially owe their success to CLC. Maketing is a big part of success that's why popular music is often not the best music there's other factors that play a big role.
