The use of honey in skin care is not a new concept. However, researchers have recently started to verify some of the anecdotal evidence about the benefits of applying honey to the skin.
These benefits may include the following:
Microbial properties and wound healing
One of the most widely recognized properties of honey is its ability to help fight against skin infections. According to one review, many in vitro studies support the idea that honey has antimicrobial properties.
The same review states that Manuka honey from New Zealand helps with healing wounds. Several countries, including the United States, have approved honey in medications for healing wounds.
Anti-inflammatory properties
Honey also has anti-inflammatory properties that can aid with skin conditions such as acne or psoriasis. Learn more about using honey for acne here.
Anti-aging effects
According to an older study, honey can help with improving the skin’s appearance. The authors state that it can help stop wrinkles from forming, keep the skin looking young, and prevent infections on the skin that can accelerate aging.

Benefits of using honey for the face
Raw honey is packed with components beneficial for your skin, especially if you have acne or autoimmune skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Even Candida overgrowth may be controlled by applying honey to your skin.
Raw honey helps balance the bacteria on your skin, which makes it a great product to use for acne. Manuka honey has been studied as an anti-acne product and found to be significantly more effective than other popular products.
Honey speeds up your skin cells’ healing processes. If you have blemishes or an eczema outbreak, honey that’s unpasteurized could speed healing and reduce inflammation. Manuka honey is so effective at healing wounds quickly that it’s now used by doctors in clinical settings.
Raw honey is also a natural exfoliator, which means applying it to your face takes off dry, dull skin and reveals new skin cells underneath.
Honey for skin lightening and brightening
Researchers haven’t drawn a direct connection between using honey on your face and lightening dark spots.
But since honey has exfoliating properties, using it on your face can eliminate dead skin cells that make your skin look dull. This can reveal brighter skin.
After washing your face with soap and water, apply manuka honey or another variety of unpasteurized, raw honey to your face. If you’d like, dilute the honey with purified water to make it less sticky and easier to remove. Leave the honey on your skin for several minutes before rinsing off.
1. Honey and Lemon Face Mask:
Procedure:
Mix honey, lemon juice, and almond oil together.
Apply this face mask to the clean and dry face and leave it on for 15-20 minutes.
Later, rinse it off with cool water and pat your face dry.
How it works: This face mask is good for dry and patchy skin. It moisturizes your face making it soft and supple.
2. Baking Soda and Lemon Face Mask:
Procedure:
Mix lemon juice and baking soda together until you get a pale, runny paste.
Apply this face mask to the clean and dry face and leave it on for 10 minutes.
Later, rinse it off with cool water and pat your face dry.
Then, apply a light, oil-free moisturizer on your face.
How it works: It removes excess oil from the skin, cleanses it, and evens out skin tone. It also kills acne-causing bacteria preventing future acne.
3. Turmeric and Honey Face Mask:
Procedure:
Mix the two well.
Wash your face with tepid water to open up pores and pat dry.
Apply the mix to your face and leave it on for at least 20 minutes.
Wash your face with tepid water and then with cool water.
How it works: It absorbs excess oil from the face and helps treat acne. It also nourishes the skin and lightens dark spots.
4. Avocado and Honey Face Mask:
Procedure:
Mix honey and mashed avocado together.
Wash your face with lukewarm water to open up pores and pat dry.
Apply the mix to your face and leave it on for about 10-15 minutes.
Later, wash your face with tepid water and then with cool water.
How it works: It nourishes and tones the skin making you look younger and beautiful.
