One problem of big phones, that foldables do not solve, is single handed operation. Users with small hands might actually prefer smaller screens, not just smaller phones.

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S10e since august 2019, and I totally agree with those problems. While the screen still looks superb, it's just not big enough for hours of media consumption, and the battery can't give me nearly a full day of intensive usage without crippling the phone's performance with battery saving meassures. I still love it though, and I'm planning on using it for long time.

I've always favored small/compact phones. The one I have now is a modest LG Leon LTE I bought in 2015. It fulfills my needs! I keep my phone's downloads to a necessary minimum with the exception of Discord and security apps. I also clear the cache of other apps every now and then, while rarely ever turning the brightness up past 20-40%. I keep its look fresh by getting a new case for it every few years. The only cons I can think of is the B- camera lens and it's tendency to heat up after browsing for a while. Otherwise, I love my phone. Reliable, functional and familiar.

I have an iPhone 12 mini and I purchased it soley because I wanted manufacturers to start making smaller phones and Apple did an amazing job with that so I switched over from android but after hearing that it only sold 6% of the iPhone lineup goes to show people don’t really want a compact version of a big phone so if Motorola or Samsung can make a foldable clamshell phone more affordable I think that would be the perfect solution for small phones because the mini was also really compelling to buy it was the cheapest iPhone of all the new ones

The thing that Sony did that Apple didn't is make their compact phones thicker so that they could still fit pretty much everything inside. The Compact phones were so chunky and adorable. I would love a modern Sony phone that's sub 6" since I use the XZ1 and don't need a much bigger screen. So I guess I'll have to settle for the 5 mkII, though at the same time it has more than other phones so it's not really a settlement. :P

To be honest, Apple deserves some credit for keeping the smallish phones alive. The X, XS and 11 Pro are pretty pocketable, not to mention the SE 2020 and Mini. Samsung and Huawei also made an effort with the S10e and P40 models.
I would have already jumped on the 12 Mini if it wasn't such a massive downgrade in the camera department from my P30 Pro...

Alright I have some theories as to why the iPhone 12 Mini failed:
    1. Poor pricing
Let's admit it, the price that it came at, was disappointing, to say the least. Maybe a $100-200 lower would mean a very different story
    2. Existence of the iPhone SE 2020
The 12 Mini is aimed at those wanting with smaller phones. But you know what is the largest problem with that? There already existed a cheaper alternative to that, from Apple itself, the SE launch the same year.

I´d love me one of those clamshells... if not for their stated weaknesses. That´s why I got a Unihertz Atom L last week, four-inch screen, big battery and water/shock protected. Even the half-inch thickness is fine with me, hate those ultraslim phones you can´t get a grip on without pressing something you didn´t want to.
Found a weakness: Wifi seems to be interfering with Bluetooth. Hoping for an upgrade.

I'm so looking forward to Samsung's next flip foldable with an actual useful outside screen, or Motorola's next razr with actual flagship specs.

I was hoping the Pantech C300 would make a cameo in this video! I thought it was so cool how tiny and pocketable that thing was back in the day. Definitely a phone I'd love to see over on your "When phones were fun" series!

You might not agree with this, but for me (a former owner of 2 Sony Compacts) my current Galaxy Fold1 is a better small phone than the Sony, It's narrow when closed and the screen is small enough to be used with one hand it's little bit heavy but I got adjust to it after 1 week

That matte black Galaxy Z Flip 5G looks amazing! 100% would pay the extra money just for the better colours. Maybe not the best financial decision? 🤷‍♂️

Small phones are for the average consumer who updates when their phone screen stops working. We will see a peak up on the sales on the mini in the second quarter of this year like we do every year. We saw it with the 11 we will see it here too.

As someone who likes small phones, I feel like a folding phone defeats the purpose of why I use one. Of course I don't have any experience using something like the Z Flip, but the usability of phones with larger screens isn't that great if you want to one hand it. Nearly everyone I let hold my iphone 12 mini has seriously considered it as their next phone and a few actually went through with it and they love it. Pocket space hasn't really been a thing people have been talking to me about regarding small phones, it's just the raw usability for everything besides videos.

I remember the time when I got myself a second-hand Huawei Ascend P6 with the "gigantic" 4.7" screen and some of my workmates joked that I had bought a TV-set. Truth be told, the 4.7" display was huge in comparison to the displays of the iPhone 4S and the 5. Now, the Ascend P6 seems completely tiny compared to the slabs we can buy today. But the new "flip" phones are not the new small phones. They are too expensive, too complicated, too high-maintenance and too fragile.

I always wanted a small phone but I never got one. I don't take pictures on my phone except for the very very occasional snaps of documents and a single camera with 5MP capacity is more than enough for that. I also don't use the phone screen for extensive media consumption so a small screen won't bother me. The only thing that's stopping me is the battery. 20 out of 30 days I'm in my office and have the luxury of charging my phone anytime I want but the rest of the days I'm out in the field and not having enough juice will hinder my workflow.

I disagree with the "need" for a large screen, im a guy, 6'2, so not small and i can reach the edges of the larger screens. But ive been a LG G5 user up until recently as i need to do a screen repair after 5 years. And my back up here is also an older phone with a similar 5.5" inch screen of the time. I think your iphone 5 size is too small. But that 2015 size was perfect imo.
Ill mention at the end here, i really want a new Razr. But, once i can be sure of the reliability for a thousand or more dollars. I used my g5 without a case for 5 years.

Absolutely agreed with the main argument! I had a ZFlip for 6 months and I just couldn't take with the bad speaker sound quality, mediocre cameras and the cris witch came more evident with further usage... That's why I am back to a slab big o'phone paired with an amazing iPhone 12 Mini (2020's best phone I think...tough it almost could be the ZFlip)! Loved the video concept, keep it on!

iPhone 12 mini is by far the best iPhone...
The form factor... the accessibility... The ease to pockets is just muahhhh...
It's more of a lifestyle device for ppl who travel for work and want things compact...
Sad to see such a low demand...
I've been using it for abt a month and it's a delight in every sense...
    It's everything I asked for...

A clamshell foldable doesn't change the biggest issue with the huge phones I think we have today - they are impossible to use with one hand.

I got the Razr 5g (partially because a trade-in brought the price down to $700) and I love it. It's not perfect, but it's definitely a phone I'll be happy using for the next two years, and having it in my hands makes even more excited to see how they improve on it.
