Found this game back in 2008, I played the New Game+ several times and attained the "God" rank (I played it from the lowest difficulty available). I was like 9 but this game's insanity is really captivating. I don't really understand what's going on but it's interesting and I love seeing like half the screen is covered in my Jet's weapon's animations most of the time.
Looks a bit like RIVE except that it stays a shmup instead of being RIVE’s weird platform-shmup mix. Also, Tyrian. This thing looks pretty funny and high-effort
To anybody who is watching this review, makes it to the end, and says "ehhh, idk, doesn't seem like it's for me", I strongly.. STRONGLY encourage you to watch another Jets'N'Guns video that *is not* a review, go watch the game on Level 10 Hard. Go see how the guns, enhancements, upgrades, bombs, missiles, AND equipment evolves. You can do something like surround your plane with 4 drones, but then you can equip tech to make the 4 drones fire the same weapon as your main weapon, then you can have on auto-aim, or weapon rotation, and then the display you saw in this video looks like someone lit a match compared to an entire fireworks display done on New Year's Eve. This game ramps up visually, in difficulty, and in FUN. It's cheap. Don't sleep on this wonderful time waster.
I recommend it too, I have seen how ridiculous things get after several playthroughs when you have the right build, I just couldn't spend enough time to get to that point or do it justice with a review.
This game deserves a 4.5 / 5 just for the music Surprised and disappointed you didn't mention the soundtrack "Brutalisphere" has been on repeat on my playlist for weeks
Yea, I've since refined the format of my reviews, TBH my older ones weren't the most structured and I sometimes forgot to mention certain aspects of games, but this one does indeed have a banging soundtrack.
This looks like Mechstermination Force and Rive had a lovechild (it looks great). Maan, I subscribed awhile ago because your voice is chill as hell.. Thanks for the review!
I've not actually played either of those, tho I think I have Rive on Playstation 🙄 Haha, thanks Riggs, to be honest I've never really liked the sound of my own voice, which I suppose is the same for most people, but a few have commented on it so It musn't be that bad 😂 you're welcome as always.
Looked forward to this review, since I want to get this one. It looks pretty cool, the action is real and I like game Stats, just as "total killed enemies, total play time..." - kinda boring for anyone else, but I love this stuff. Thanks for the review, Star. Finally a game I'll get for sure. :D
Hey Tobi, if you enjoy SHMUPs then I'm sure you will love this, I liked all the customisation, the 2 player coop and the way you can slowly ramp up the difficulty. You're welcome 🙂
Wassup Luke? Great review, as always! First up, I wanna say, I have barely ever played a shmup in my life. I have always loved the idea of them, but they have pretty much been way to hard for me to ever stick with. It's funny to me how often you say you're terrible at shmups, when I can barely even get 30 seconds into a game and you manage to get far enough through the ones you review to at least gather enough information on them to give a solid opinion, though obviously you are comparing yourself against players who can dance around bullets like Neo. Thanks to your channel and some of your reviews I've watched of shmups I have been interested in giving them another shot. I got the VASARA Collection after seeing you talk about it, and I have to admit, though I am terrible at it, its the one I have played the most of and actually tried to get good on. HOWEVER, now that I have seen THIS review, I am starting to think that Jets and Guns 2 might have been made specifically for me and my skill set lol. I never heard about this series before your video, but I already think I love it! The ship outline idea is golden as I always tend to lose track of myself in the cacophony of mayhem and that alone probably ends at least half of my runs. The heat/bullet system is an interesting mechanic, as the shmups that I have played usually let you fire forever with no penalties. I know this type of system was criticized in the newest Contra game, but I am curious as to your thoughts on the whole heat idea in shmups. Is that a common thing that I have just missed due to limited experience with the genre? I especially like how the bombs recharge over time, so you don't have to fly well to pick up power-ups or ammo refills to use them. I … cannot … even … express how awesome the idea of customizing the ship is to me, and I love how the game has both visual and internal customization. Systems like this in games always give me more of a reason to keep playing them, as there is always something new to unlock or collect. I feel that anything like this only serves to extend the game even more, in a good way. Also, the fact that Casual Mode has everything unlocked from the start makes it the perfect place to experiment with customization before bumping up the difficulty (that I would probably never survive anyway lol). The inclusion of a checkpoint system also excites me as that will help me actually feel like progress is achievable, that and an actual health bar so the player can't get insta-killed with one mistake. It seems pretty cool that the devs also added some variation to the mix like adding snake to the game to unlock crates as well as some races to kind of chill out with. Additionally, the sheer volume of customization and even the little things like being able to test your load-outs and including devices show me that the devs really go above and beyond what I am used to seeing in a typical shmup. Almost like a Diablo style ARPG, but as a shmup. The fact it has local co-op is pretty darn neat as well, and given Nintendo's history with online matches, I think local is about all we could expect even if the game had online co-op. I don't really get the choice of locking off additional currency behind surpassing your own score on Normal and above. I mean, I get that they want to encourage the player to improve, but requiring constant improvement right away might hinder some people's experiences when they can't pass their score for more money to upgrade, like you did in the video, and like I most assuredly will as well. Just seems like a pretty steep penalty to have your whole run wasted if you don't beat your score. Oh well, thank God for Casual Mode I suppose. I also love the idea of New Game Plus. Thanks to your review, I am definitely going to be getting this game as soon as I have the money to. Thanks again for the amazing amount of work you put into your content! I am curious, since I don't think you mentioned it, what happens if you run into the walls or the environment in this game? I would expect the environment would likely hurt us, but can you also damage your ship by just bumping into the top or bottom of the screen when there are walls?
Hey steep, thank you. I really am bad at the more difficult ones, like Red Death, I only managed to get to the end of the second level and died on the boss. Luckily SHMUP mechanics are generally quite simple so im usually able to cover most of them even with a short time playing. The Switch seems to have quite a lot of SHMUPs, and I like the fact that many of them have TATE mode, I think it works really well on the console as you can get the Flip Grip, many of them I've played recently also seem to be catering for the less able of us too with their difficulty levels. I think Jets n Guns 2 does a fantastic job with all its different mechanics, I think the heat system works well in this game, as more powerfull weapons cause more heat so you cant just strap 4 of the best guns on, you have to actually think about your ship build which makes the customisation mechanics even more enjoyable. BTW that hacking tool also has several minigames you can play on it, I didnt include it in the review as a supprise :) I thought the currency thing in normal was an odd choice, it increases challenge and makes you think more about what youre buying but it also means you can potentially get stuck like I was, unable to beat a boss with your loadout. You should most definitely pick it up if you're wanting to give SHMUPs more of a go. If you run into walls your health is drained, but if you get squished between walls and the scrolling screen you're destroyed.
@@SwitchStars oh man, it is my favorite !! It's a vertical top down 2.5D looking shmup. Graphics are amazing just like this game, awesome sound effects and music. It is a grinder though, you slowly power up your craft which provides tons of replayability. Also has weekend weekly online tournaments. Check out a trailer/screenshots !
That sounds pretty awesome to be honest, and I don't mind a good grind as long as gameplay is fun and I feel like I'm progressing, i'll give it a lookie, thanks 🙂
I've always sucked really really bad at shoot 'em ups. The only ones I could beat were the ones I played on MAME and could put in infinite fake quarters. This one sure does look great, though. I especially like the look of that biological stage with the eyes following you and fleshy looking floors.
Hey Melissa, Yea I'm not great at them but this one on casual is not that hard though, it's pretty forgiving and you can redo missions to get moneys for guns. Yea I liked that level, reminded me of Bio Hazard Battle on the megadrive.
Yea I hadn't even heard of it before playing this one, I'll hopefully get around to giving it a go and a review when I find the time, mega busy with new releases recently.
Oh, i hope you will find some time. At the "end of the universe" you found some restaurant with some strange guy. He upgraded your ship so u can now follow your enemy not only in space, but in time. Casual difficulty is lame in this game. It should be played on standard. Doesn't matter how good or bad you are at the game, casual presents no challenge and no fun. The first Jets'n'Guns has a better balanced difficulty, where normal was still very tough, but easy wasn't a complete cakewalk, like casual is in JnG 2.
Credits to Machinae Supremacy for the OST (also did JnG 1)
Yea the soundtrack did sound pretty awesome to be honest hehe
