1. Jamerson was a genius, the alternate phrasing at the end of the song is brilliance. 2. This is spot on accurate cover. 3. That Pino custom bass is almost as great as the man himself (check out the Who live on Jools)
The original line however is from Jamerson (on the David Ruffin version, which was recorded prior to this song, but released after the J5 version). Felder adapted the Jamerson line for use in this song.
IMO as this song is played without a pick, the cover is more "true to the original" when played like that. Nothing against picking, it's a different way of playing bass, definitely less challenging than by fingerpicking (strumming is something else, more used for chords in guitars)
I shouldda known that wasn't just any old bass line...it's James Jamerson and you nailed it Miki, wow. Very advanced play here...even effin Mark King of Level 42 has to dumb down!
Hi, i just want to thank you very much, cause very soon I will play this song on bass with my friends, and this your cover helped me very much. Good luck Miki, i think that i will visit your bass covers soon again ;) bye Maro
There’s that little fill in the chorus at around 1:38 which I just can’t work out, anyone know the notes or has a transcript just for that one little fill?
Might be wrong but it sounds like he just plays the 5th and octave of the C#. That'd be the 8th fret of the D string followed by 8th fret of the G string.
Classic Bass Do you mean the technique, fingering, or just the notes? Search (here) for "Wilton Felder's isolated bass on I Want You Back". There was a transcription in the July 1998 Bass Player magazine that included some notes from Wilton Felder himself. As a side-note, almost every TH-cam cover you see of this song is finger-style on a P bass, but apparently he played this on a Telecaster bass, single coil pickup, with flats and a pick, through a B-15.
beautiful! got that Jimmie Jamerson groove goin'....... a lot of guys forget to GROOVE the lines, as opposed to just playing the notes. that's why they suck.
make sure it is a DEhumidifier...it takes moisture out of the air which can not only damage strings but it can warp wood as well. I knew a guy that kept his guitars in a damp basement and they were a mess, lol...necks warped, all kinds of disasters.
I could listen to this all day
Nag
Love the sound of the bass
Am I the only one that still come to listen to this? I cannot stop listening
You are very quickly teaching me to love the bass more than i thought i ever could
I love the bass in this song idk why but I love it
Justin Schiesel the bass really makes this song tbh
Bass sounds badass, you play amazing too props
Greatest baseline ever
A thing of beauty

cee jaypee not jamerson
cee jaypee *Jermaine
Andre De Jesus Nope, Wilton Felder.
Soz. Still genius!

I now realize how sloppy I play this, haha. Great job!
Boss Groove, I`m DIGGIN` this..
Sounds really authentic in comparison to the original track. Good job!
Dude, your work is insane! loving the Pino P-bass on this, great pairing
Best cover of this on You Tube - Great player Dude.
One of my favorite videos on TH-cam
You have a very nice tone, that's something most people overlook.
One of the great bass sound
Wilton Felder recorded this bass line, not James Jamerson.
Very well done!
Amazing, very good indeed!
This bassline is a bitch to play
it's not the patterns people are used to. love it!
Agree, at the real tempo (98 bpm) it's hard to hold. But It's so better than --2--2--2--2- bass line :)
Legendary my friend
Spot on man. Thank you for not using a pick!
What's wrong with a pick ? Fools people who think you can play bass only strumming..
IMO as this song is played without a pick, the cover is more "true to the original" when played like that. Nothing against picking, it's a different way of playing bass, definitely less challenging than by fingerpicking (strumming is something else, more used for chords in guitars)
As a bassist myself, everytime I see someone using a pick I want to throw a brick through thier face.
i find it hard playing hard with a pick more thhan plucking
John-David Bass their*
Nice pino palladino bass you got going there for you.
Great job - great sound!!!
🙏🙏🙏
I shouldda known that wasn't just any old bass line...it's James Jamerson and you nailed it Miki, wow. Very advanced play here...even effin Mark King of Level 42 has to dumb down!

Larry McQueary I think he mean the version Miki was playing. Me too, can't find the "original" one anywhere yet.
Eres un crack
Great
Kid, you're really good.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Cool....
locked 🔒
to achaive that sound, if you have a bass fender turn up the gain or boost
+Joshua Jean Francois what? no
It is rather flatwound strings and P bass or neck pickup.
Can you tell me what brand are those strings and if they have a good tension? :) you sound awesome man keep playing.
Pino bass, what a gear..
beautiful! got that Jimmie Jamerson groove goin'....... a lot of guys forget to GROOVE the lines, as opposed to just playing the notes. that's why they suck.
So I've been wondering, is the Pino Relic worth the $4200?
What gear did you use in this video? Type of P bass, strings amp etc? Sounds so full!
Great video! Who wrote and played this bass line? What's the name of the bassist?
Good on ya man;
That is one sweet sounding P. And good lookin' too! Great cover man
Nice! How did you record this? What string brand.?
What about teaching us how to play it? It'd be amazing... You're great player.
I second this
La diteggiatura del verso è atipica. Ma soprattutto mi sembra che tu non suoni il SI ma il SI bemolle nella frase principale. Mi sto sbagliando?
you could put a tablature?
how does he record is there a video
He uses a camera
Thats one hell of a good camera
What's it like to be good at something?
so could this sound only be achieved through flat wounds ?
+Leonard Crainie I just put some on my Fender, and in my opinion, yes, that's what is needed. Makes a huge difference.
Dana Hatzimichaels thank you ! Do flat wounds rust ?
+Leonard Crainie Hey...I run a dehumidifier in the room where I have my set up so I never have that problem :)
Dana Hatzimichaels interesting ! So does a humidifier always keep strings fresh ?
make sure it is a DEhumidifier...it takes moisture out of the air which can not only damage strings but it can warp wood as well. I knew a guy that kept his guitars in a damp basement and they were a mess, lol...necks warped, all kinds of disasters.
I HAVE THE SAME BASS LOL CHEERS
Very cool. I wish the bass was potted up.

Isn't the original faster?
I prefer the original speed.
Bärchen Blaster The Jacksons just played it faster in later live performances
