Sometimes it's hard to tell so Taryl's going to tell you why you need to replace and what happens if you don't. There's a few things to know so Taryl's gotcha covered. And as always... I was taught this method as lad over sixty years ago
To check the wear on the chain piviot pins.
Clean the chain thoroughly in Kerosene, Turpentine or gasoline
Drape it on a flat surface or the chain bar with the adjustment slackened off.
Push the links together to make it a short as possible.
Measure off 1 foot of slack chain and mark the chain on the foot.
Pull the chain apart to make it as long as possible.
Measure the length of the stretched chain.
If it is greater then 3/16 of an inch it is worn out.
No matter what length of pitch the chain is this apply to all piviot pin chains

A couple of months back, a co-worker gave me some lawnmowers his neighbor was abandoning. One of them was a -tiny- little (like 16") "SerVess", that looked new. Mower had no safety brake or any modern safety devices, so it had to be from the 80's.. He said "Guy said it never cut well" Flipped it over, yep, Blade was upside down. Oil change, replaced the primer bulb and air filter, flipped the blade over (still sharp!) and it's an awesome little slope mower.

Taryl, I repair mowers and my brother also repairs mowers n atvs on the side. I gotta say people underestimate the amount of work that goes into a business like this.. my main gig is a Technician that repairs atm machines alarms and time locks. I got to help work on the the alarms for the Smithsonian safeguarding the hope diamond and our company Dieboldnixdorf also maintains the vaults the Constitution and bill of rights is housed in. Dieboldnixdorf built the vaults.
But the amount of beer I drink and time I spend working to get these mowers working and looking like new is unbelievable. Hats off to you guys thanks for all your time you spend putting these great vids together. I have seen them all. Cheers

I'm not Dudley Do-Right, though I sharpen my rotary lawnmower blades to a knife edge sharpness before mowing any lawn. When looking at the cut blades of grass they are comparable to being cut with a reel mower. I marvel at how much advise there is out there for essentially mowing with a dull blade and a dull blade is any blade that is not as sharp as a knife. A reel mower might be good with a yearly sharpening that costs 100 dollars to have done properly. A rotary mower needs to be sharpened continually and the price of sharpening is next to nothing.

Mention of a manual reel mower brings back a lot of BAD childhood memories. The mower we owned had to have been the hardest to push mower ever made. You had to get a run for the section of grass you wanted to cut and then after three or four feet of cutting you would have to stop and back up and get another run. No matter how hard I complained to my Dad, it fell on deaf ears. He would just laugh and say that it would put hair on my chest. Oh what a wonderful day when we got a new Sears & Roebuck gasoline powered rotary mower. The only drawback was that it was a devil to start, but once it started, it was a dream to mow grass. Oh those memories from yesterday years.

The groove in the bar on the chainsaw is critical also. If it is worn wide, the cut may not be straight; it can be "squeezed" or carefully hammered back to proper width. Also, it needs to be filed/ground so it is square to the side of the bar. Good information on lawnmower blades and to see that Andy is doing okay too!

Here in Florida the sand destroys lawnmower blades. Every time you mow, it's like taking a sandblaster to your blades. You can sharpen one and it's dull 5 minutes into your next mow. I just replace them when they are worn and not cutting well.

Taryl, one detail you didn’t cover was discarding a blade like one you showed that was wearing very thin in the curved area at the base of the wing going upwards. The blade shown already possibly threw off a chip and it’s only a matter of time before it launches a much larger section. This is a common wear area. Safety first or someone’s gonna eat some shrapnel!

I switch to those Gators in the fall when I have to chop and bag leaves. They are super heavy and the cutting edge is straight... so it's easy to resharpen. This is a big deal because there is always sticks and nuts among the leaves. Probably the dry crunchy leaves are more abrasive too.
During the summer I use the twisty mulching blades because they mulch better.

First I've seen on checking the corner of the blade! This just be the case with me cos I've never checked. I have a two-blade Murray 11ic/36 and three-blade Viking MT 6112 C. If I recall correctly none of the blades are 90° sharp at the corners but I'd like Mr Carbutrator to show a series of angles close up, going from brand new to different levels of wearing out to worn out. Prompted by this I'll waste some more time seeing if anyone else on the Interscreen has tackled this.

I don't like those wavy mulching blades. Hard to sharpen and bend easy. High lift blades mow good and are required for bagging, but they can really kick up the dust. The Gator blades I've bought were thick and worked good on mower used around the fence line on the farm.
Thin blades I'll use a 4 1/4 grinder but a Cub Cadet with thick blades use file. (Lift on return stroke or will dull file). Then balance, very important.
Sharping chainsaw I clamp in vice, level bar and after sharping first tooth, paint it with bright red fingernail polish. So when comes back around, know I got them all. Then turn saw around & do the opposite side teeth
Always wear eye protection and gloves. Any questions consult your local Grass Rat.
