I just wanna say how much I appreciate this type of content. You learn something new and interesting, but you can also clearly see that Joey is having a ton of fun which makes it fun for you. On top of that, since it's a casual obviously not planned vlog you actually feel like you're hanging out with them! Love it!

Considering what Toei did to Totally Not Mark, I'd suppose anime companies could conceivably still take away Joey's channel just because. I'm totally ignoring any legal ways Joey could defend himself because it doesn't appear like the greedy bastard companies feel like complying with those anyway.

As an animal activist, I don’t recommend having shark fin soup. The shark fin trade is horrendous. I’ve seen videos from fishermen where they catch sharks, chop off their fins for the stupid soup for superstitions, and dump the sharks back into the ocean. The poor sharks, missing their fins, can’t maneuver through the water, so they wriggle around helplessly until they die slow, painful deaths. I recommend knowing what you’re getting into before trying something new, especially when it comes to certain “traditional” dishes.

    • @illegalseagulls

When I heard shark fin my stomach sank. It’s important to know how things are sourced, especially food and especially meat as this one is the worst that I’ve ever seen. I hope everyone looks into the monstrous practise of acquiring it, that no one eats it after and that you spread the word and fight for those sharks that are pointlessly dwindling at an alarming rate. 😣💔 It truly breaks my heart and it needs to end.

Sharks arent the only ones, Japan is the largest in the industry when it comes to poaching dolphins and whales, sharks are moreso a Chinese practice. There is virtually no regulation and its quite hard to enforce these sorta things. Especially since its a pretty large industry and shark fin soup is pretty delicious and a lot of Asian restaurants in general around the world consume it, including Australia (where I live).

We also have similar dishes here in Finland. I think serving the whole head with skull and all is/was rare but traditionally every single edible part of an animal was eaten here. It's quite rare to find those dishes anymore, but still in 70's and 80's they did appear every now and then at family dinners. It's a pity really, since our people eat more meat than ever, but we use less parts of the animal (as human food) than before. Liver, blood, heart, tonique, intestines and bones are still used regularly from certain animals but other parts.... I wonder if they are properly used for something.

As someone who is half moroccan/half Greek that lives in belgium, i've had a lot of unconventional foods. So i i incredibly enjoy trying out new stuff.
Getting over the way something looks/what something is, can be scary for a lot of my friends.
But i've had many fun opportunities to have friends try out stuff they've never had before.

    How to generalise Chinese food:
Southern Chinese food: as late Prince Philip put it: "If it has got four legs and it is not a chair, if it has got two wings and it flies but is not an aeroplane, and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it"
Northern Chinese food: Genghis Khan and the likes.
Western Chinese food: Halal & spicy Chinese food
Eastern Chinese food: Korean/Japanese food's "Chuka ryouri" section

tbh, stinky tofu is just fried tofu which is great but some people can't get pass the smell.
(from my place pig intestines are something we eat and it's my favorite)

7:50 doesn’t stinky tofu have a variety of versions of it? Can’t you get tofu that’s been aged for 1 year vs tofu that’s been aged for 6 weeks? So maybe that version wasn’t the smelliest because it was barley aged.

stinky tofu fried is one of the best dishes, but when it's not fired the smell is way worse and the taste is wayyy stronger

It's not like we don't eat stuff like that in Europe or "the West". Nowadays, we have such an oversupply of food, that we are just used to picking only the most popular parts, and many people do not know, what is used in traditional cuisine. But you can still get that stuff in many places, specialty restaurants etc. Speaking for Germany, there is a regional dish called "Kutteln" which is cut up stomach of cows or sometimes other animals. Liver is eaten quite commonly in Germany, Brain used to be used in certain sausages and sometimes soups (until mad cow disease killed that).
That's also the only issue I would have with that, brain is known to transmit prion-based neurological illnesses like mad-cow, scrapie etc. So if I'd eat something like that, it would really have to be from extremely well kept animals, only fed on natural foods etc.
Also, the idea of a fried mars bar makes me vomit...

True, even just 100 years ago, you would see most of the "undesirable" organs still regularly eaten by Western lower class folk. Meat was rare enough that you didn't waste any edible parts. Nowadays the standard of living has risen enough that most Americans and Europeans don't need to eat them.

Now you know the reasons why Chinese cuisine have bigger influence globally than British grubs, but the British blokes think they are so good at food and can't stop being gobby innit? I rather eat duck brains and tongues marinated with flavourful spices, than a damn bland Jellied eels or a bloody effing Haggis.
(Whoa whoa, chill mate! For god's sake, keep your hair on! It's a joke!)
But yeah, on serious note, Chinese cuisine is very good that's why you can see its influence in almost everywhere (especially if you are not a person who get put off of a food before actually tasting it despite it being 100% edible). Haven't taste Baijuu/Chinese Liquor yet, but now you really convinced me to taste it!

The seafood stew thing looked like “Buddha jumps over the wall (allured by the fragrance of this dish)”
It’s a bunch of rehydrates seafood, some intentionally aged for certain amount of time. The jellyfish looking thing is probably a specific fish’s air bladder. The abalone is presumably also rehydrated for condensed flavour. The golden soup is likely coloured with pumpkin, a fairly modern modification.
As for the “doesn’t look chinese” lamb soup with flatbread, I find it interesting that most people when talking about Chinese food, think of south eastern coastal Chinese, this might have some historical reasons. But this dish is very much chinese, in fact it’s most popular in Shanxi, capital and heartland of China since the first dynasty.

Have you ever tried deep-fried duck intestine? I had them when I was growing up in Thailand. They took duck intestine, clean it, and boiled it in some kind of seasoning soup. Then they dry the intestine before deep-frying them. Super crispy (potato chips crispy).
