I built a paludarium / aquaterrarium for my Archerfish about 3 weeks ago and I've been trying to get them to spit ever since. Did I manage to train them, will they do it from instinct alone?

This is ridiculously cool!! Are you going to find them some buggies and flies to put in there? Maybe you could get some of those and cover the top with plastic wrap so they don't escape, see if they'll target them.

I keep a shoal of 13 archers myself and let me tell you, they see any kinds of bug in the room (let alone the tank), they engage FULL predator mode. They smash crickets and you see a whole different side of things when live food (or even frozen food is popped on the powerhead). - Mega little predators!

Cool stuff, I once had a dwarf gourami that had learnt to spit water to get my attention when he was hungry. I can't quite remember how he had learnt how to do it but I think I just noticed him doing it one time and threw food in the tank asap cos it would be convenient, since I forget to feed them every now and again.

Epic! I have a Dwarf Gourami, and guys and girls, they do it too!! I noticed the behaviours of my Gourami in the Archerfish, and I didn't know that Gourami's do this also, and well enough after some googling, i was excited to put flake food on our tank. First attempt lasted 10 minutes, and didn't work, but he really had a go at jumping and v lining it. Later that day, the second attempt, water was being spit in large quantities at multiple targets. Huge Success. Ive been feeding him wrong for the 6 months I've owned him! What a primal behaviour, so great to watch.

The angels being curious creatures kept observing me. But I didnt look up as was busy with the endlers. • @Stephen-jw8ci

you should do some cricket feedings next. ik you’re probably a little concerned about crickets getting loose in the studio but you could probably get a glass rod and silicone or superglue a small branch to one end, then hang the glass rod from the ceiling pointing down over the tank. crickets shouldn’t be able to climb the glass rod so they’ll be stuck in one place for the fish instead of putting them on the existing driftwood and watching them go into the plants or out of the tank. also if you try this it’ll be hard to get crickets onto the branch since most will just blindly jump into the water when you get too close, so maybe attach a cup with a removable lid to the branch so they can climb onto it gradually. you could also lay a branch across the front of the tank from end to end and put a decently sized piece of corrugated plastic around each end of the branch on the inside of the tank creating a wall that the crickets can’t crawl past to escape

It's not often while watching an aquarium video that I'm laughing and cheering the action on...but yeah. I was 😀 What gorgeous archers!

This was great thanks. Try some flightless fruit flies or springtails in the dry half of the tank.

Super cool!! Maybe try some on the wood so that the food can be seen from the front.
