I think the number lore are trying to find X because they are trying to solve an equations with unknown quantities problem, because the variable you are finding is X, because if they just use X to multiply, that would be useless, they have all the time they want and can easily make a massive number with just a plus symbol, and they are also WAY more advanced than the alphabet lore, which means they could've already found a way to multiply long ago, they already found a way to add numbers, so what's stopping them from creating a multiply symbol? The most plausible answer is that they are trying to find X for an equations with unknown quantities problem.

My theory. Yes 1 will probably multiply numbers. But the reason he wanted X was because of the gem. The gem’s shape is an acersist which is this “*” and an acersist can also be used for multiplication. So 1 will use the gem to multiply not X. MY THEORY
