It can often be a treacherous task, gluing exotics. The best that can be done with water-based glues with oily woods or those that oxidise quickly is to go into the glueup process immediately after planing or to clean them up with acetone. I find that spritzing the faces of drier woods like Mahoganies, Maples, etc. with water helps the adhesive to migrate into the structure better. Wood likes to fight back!
Hope you are well Carl. Been concerned about you guys since the floods. Peace.

A friend of mine used to work in Ken Smith's shop, and took me to see the whole operation. Ken was an interesting dude, and super nice. Showed me the whole shop, and took me into the basement where they store an intense amount of gorgeous exotic woods. Then we were in Ken's office, and I noticed a few pictures on the walls of bass players with their KS basses, and a few of them also had CT basses pictured in their collections. I mentioned it, and Ken made a point of saying that Carl used a lot of scrap wood, and did pretty sloppy work. I laughed it off. Either way, I'd love to own a CT bass some day.

I had the opportunity of trying the basses from both of those guys on two different occations. First I played Kens 5 string single cut and quite liked it. Played like butter. After that session I said that I would do anything to try one of those Carl Thompsons. The opportunity rose and I grabbed it. Let me put something out there: I really, honest to God do not know what Carl and the team do to the wood to make it play like this. Ken can say what ever he wants but Carl is Stradivari of making electric bass guitars. I had the privilege of playing one for about 45 minutes and in that time I realized that this is the bass for me. I am just unlucky enough to know that I will never ever have the money to place an order with Carl for one of his instruments so all I have are those 45 minutes. I had an opportunity to play almost all major brands, bunch of customs but none came close to a CT.

Carl stated in a previous vid they were using Titebond 3 as it spread better. I dunno, it's an indoor/outdoor glue so probably has elasticizers in it. If a builder is having continual probs of laminates splitting after a few years theres factors other than thats just what laminated wood does...imo
