I'm from Ireland and play the uilleann pipes but I have never seen or heard of anyone who bought a full set that hasn't even played a practice set or even a whistle, that's crazy but hats off to that guy
well, he’s not the only one, I also did exactly that.
@@chrismills2012 how are you getting on with them now?
Actualy Matt has played whistles and had a practice set before but if speaking about Nick then yeah
I’d love to try playing them but I fear it would be horrendous. I used to live in Ireland and have fond memories of them being played in bars and socially. Good times 🎉🎉😊
I'm from Ireland and I play the uilleann pipes.
That can’t even be considered an instrument, that’s a beautifully crafted piece of art. I’d be afraid to leave so much as a strand of hair on those pipes!
I fell in love with the sound of the uilleann pipes after hearing Ommadawn in my childhood. Now I'm slightly obsessed. This is such a beautiful instrument.
Uilleann pipes sound incredible, even more so than highland pipes
The King of the pipes. Whereas most pipes stopped developing in the 18th - early 19th centuries, in Ireland they just kept on developing into a magnificent instrument.
Great video!!! You guys should definitely make another video featuring these pipes!!!! Get some of Nicks feedback on jumping straight into a full set and the pros and cons!!
🙌
Magnificent, hate to think how much these cost!
wow the uillian pipes look so amazing. I've never actully play uillian pipes.
I love the black/purple/brass combination. Not see that before
Wow what great tone and reed response right out of the box! That Purple Heart is insane...
Exquisite! They sound sublime, hard to imagine them getting even better. Would love to hear them again when you get them honed in. Thanks for the unboxing!
You're welcome! Rather wish they were mine!
Beautiful set! Nick's a lucky guy who'll have the rest of his life making wonderful music with this work of art. Thanks for this unboxing Matt.
You're welcome! It's a brilliant set for certain. Glad Nick's my friend and I get to keep hearing them!
I look at these videos and remember my old friend Desi Seery who passed away a few years back, he was a great pipe and flute maker....great channel, thanks for the content
Holy crap they sound absolutely magnificent and they slide sound is heavenly
Beautiful set. Love that purple.
Wow, I love uilleann pipe videos. Need a set of my own
Slainte! Oh my word what an amazing creation!
That seriously is probably the most amazing instrument I've ever seen in person. Wish my playing could do them justice!
@@MattWillisBagpiper I've heard these pipes on a million mournful Irish soundtracks but never seen a set. Having been brought up with GHBs and reel pipes, I assumed they were similar. Oh how little did I know? How on earth do you play all those stops and still play the chanter? What an amazing beast (whizzes off down a youtube Ullieann pipe rabbithole...) Do the stops on the drones stay locked so that you can "change key"? as it were? You need an extra set of hands. Truly the church organ of 'pipes world!
Thanks Matt and Nick, not something one sees on TH-cam or anyware for that matter.
I'm on the waiting list for a full set of Andy Faden pipes from Bedford, UK, who I believe, learned his trade along with Gordon from Cillian O'Brien.
So, I'm looking forward to my special day, hoping to go personally to collect as we're just about 3 hour drive away....meanwhile, I'm playing an Andreas Rogge chanter with Kelleher bag and bellows.
Stay safe guys
In love with the Purpleheart!
You and me both, my friend. Cheers!
when I 1st got my highland pipes, literally after about 3 weeks after getting them, I decided I wanted also to learn illon pipes. I knew very little about how to play them, but I also liked the sound and loved my highlands so much I wanted to try the cold-wind or bellows pipes.
I once had a go with a practice set when I was 12 years old they belonged to a relative of a neighbour.
unlike Northumbrian or scottish smallpipes, they do require a lot more air.
the over-blowing is what I find hard.
i to didn’t ever bother with a practice set, I went strate for the full set.
dont worry, have u 21 years for put all in orther, thats is the best set exist in thats moment, I loved and I try buy one in the future, but with my C. Roberts full set I been happy... congratulations, ty for sharing with uns, and good channel, regards of one spanish in Deutchland
That purple wood is soooo beautiful. Have you ever told your piping story in a video? Would be really interested to hear how you started playing etc.
I have not made a bio video... I think I'd need to be interviewed by someone to make it interesting. Briefly, I started playing in 1996, began learning with the Silver Thistle Pipes & Drums of Austin, TX in 1998, and was able to compete with them in 2001 at the World Pipe Band Championships in 2001. In November 2001 at the behest of the pipe major, I began teaching beginners. In April of 2004, teaching the pipes and bagpipe performance became my full time employment. Then in August 2004, I was asked to play with the Celtic rock band The Killdares. I would play with them until their retirement in 2016. In 2007, I moved to the Dallas area where I met my now wife. In 2013, I founded my pipe band Metroplex United. After the Killdares retired, I formed a new Celtic rock band called Rathmore. And in January of 2019, I began my TH-cam channel here. That's my story!
that craftsmanship made me weep
It is an incredible set
How would u compare this set and the set from Morrison?
good heavens, a full set of Galloway's for his first set..
What set or starter set do you recommend for beginners who want to get started with Ulliean Pipes and live in the US, and don't have $3k+ to spend on getting started, been wanting some for decades after growing up listening to IONA! I already have a Low D Irish Whistle I've been learning piping with but what I really want is to learn Ulliean Pipes!
hi matt ! saw the video on the irish pipes .. always loved the sound of them..but they seem to me to be very complicated.. but as usual practice makes perfect.. could you stick the chanter from the irish pipes into a conventional highland pipes ..? twould make things easier... or am i talking like a loon?
Hello! Unfortunately no, the uilleann pipe chanter and bag are their own thing and not in any way compatible with the highland pipes. Plus you can't blow moist air from your lungs onto the uilleann chanter reed without destroying it (very sensitive to moisture)
That went a little better than when he unboxed those Pakistani pipes!
Hi Matt where can I find a set of ullieann pipes
www.fredmorrisonpipes.com/
Those are so beautiful...
They are! Wish they were mine...
Where can we buy Gordon Galloway uilleann pipes or starter sets?
Does anyone have a diagram of how the bass regulator functions? Is it a double walled pipe until the turnaround?
So what do the keys actually do on the chanter? I’ve seen. Some uilleann chanters without keys too. What does it add?
The keys add accidentals. I believe this chanter has F-natural and C-natural keys. There are also B♭ and G♯ available on some chanters.
And you pronounced Uilleann correctly! I know people who know Irish Gaelic (they think they do) that can’t even do that correctly!
What was the name of the first song you played before going home?
That's the Scottish song "The Rowan Tree," one of my personal favorite melodies.
@@MattWillisBagpiper thanks man that's gonna be next on my list to learn
Great video Matt! Do you teach the uilleann pipes? I’ve played Bellows small pipes for years but never tried uillean pipes!
Yes I do! If you want info on lessons, please email me at matt@mattpiper.com
Where did you buy these? they look awesome!
My student purchased them directly through Gordon Galloway. I'm sure you could locate him on Google. 👍 👍
@@MattWillisBagpiper Ok thanks so much, I am a huge fan of your channel.
@@reid778 Glad to hear it! Im having a blast making these videos. So glad folks are finding them useful.
I'm getting a McCallum practice goose soon I wish I was in Texas so I could let you open them but unfortunately i live in the blue ridge
Enjoy your McCallum goose!
@@MattWillisBagpiper thanks matt!!
Yxng I'm in Western NC and bagpiping too!
@@cbasalt12754 ah nice I live in western Virginia near the mount rogers area
My reckoning is if an instrument really speaks to you, you may as well go all in. Its high stakes but also potentially higher pay off. Also by having a better instrument, you increase your chances of success. You actually save money in the long run by not needing to purchase the intermediate steps. Its a gamble but for some it will pay off.
It doesn't look like he's still in business? Any information? Gorgeous pipes.
I do not have any info. It's possible his waiting list became long enough to stop taking new orders...
Thanks for the response!@@MattWillisBagpiper
I heavily recomend thr uilleann pipes in Bb
They sound great, but man alive, what a finger spread to cover those holes! I have onyl seen photos, but suspect my hands aren't big enough.
@@MattWillisBagpiper i didnt thaught of that! But if you want closer fingering system, i recomend the northumbrian smallpipes. Basicaly for the finger spacing its the other way around.
But there are some of wich the finger spacing is the same as for D pipes and the only difference is the thickness of the chanter, but im not the expert at this, im still on the highland practice chanter
I’ve heard that you can add a small electric air pump to discreetly help keep the bag full of air
Ha! That'd be nice...
never heard of that but I do know their foot-bellows for the illon pipes.
someone was once selling a set of foot operated Uillean bellows.
I have played the tin whistle, low whistle and bagpipe chanter for years. I have never been able to find a place to get myself a set of uilleann pipes. Any advice on reliable places to buy a set?
I’m loving my Morrison uilleann pipes: fredmorrisonpipes.com/online/12-uilleann-pipes

@@MattWillisBagpiper Thank you!
I love t he Purple Heart on the drones
This is one of the most fantastic looking instruments I've ever had the joy of playing.
I am a wood turner an have worked with Purple Heart and it is definitely one of my favorite woods to work with
How do they compare to the Morrison set from McCallum?
I wish I had the opportunity to hear them side-by-side... They were similar is size/heft (I had had a set of Seth Gallagher pipes that were noticeably smaller overall). But too much time apart to compare tone.
@@MattWillisBagpiper thanks for replying sounds like you were happy with both though so that’s altogether a good thing! Happy thanksgiving Matt, hope you and yours are happy and healthy.
This is totally something id play a piece from the Lord of the Rings on
incredible! i am really looking to buy a uilleann pipes, could you tell me and tell the count you got yours?
This is an amazing bagpipe, but alas, it's not mine... I don't know how much it cost.
Hi Matt, is there a follow up video to this? Can't seem to find it but hey, I'm probably looking with my eyes closed lol
Did I threaten a follow up? It’s not my set, so I don’t have regular access to it. But it is a beaut.
@@MattWillisBagpiper Ah no worries. Hope you are well anyway and having piping fun!
Any follow up on how these sound now the owner has had some months with the set???
With COVID, there hasn't been much of any follow up...
@@MattWillisBagpiper For sure, thanks. I hope all are doing well and the owner is getting some enjoyable practice time with this amazing set!
The only problem I'd see with purpleheart is that it fades over time turning to gray, unless there's a UV-blocking finish on it.
Had not heard that… interesting.
easily one of the most difficult instrument on the planet...
Donnybrook aye, but that never stopped a scot did it☺️
@@DeathDay154 Thing is, most are played by us Irish..
Jetmail I wouldn’t have it any other way
You want too sell these pipes?
Go for it pal, the more the merrier..
me gustaría una para mi bendiciones
Does he have a website that works because I don’t have Facebook?
And I did google his name but website did not come up.

I’m sorry, you lost me at the whiskey tasting.... oh well. I hope it was a good video
Get yourself over here and I’ll share some whisky with you!
@@MattWillisBagpiper will do.
Live the Uillean pipes dont like the regulator sound.
I am afraid to ask what was the price 0_o
Yes, be afraid... But they are absolutely stunning!
Was kostet so ein Gerät...
I really want….
I would like one for me, how much is it worth, I am in Bogota, Colombia, I interpret the Galician
A full set I believe runs around $9000 USD
Favorite Uilleann pipes tune anyone?
Probably "The Legends Spreads" from Braveheart.
That's a nice one! I think mine would have to be May Morning Dew as done by Stone Circle
i just started
On the uilleann pipes? Top man!
Wanna sell those
Not mine to sell, but I wouldn’t! They’re too gorgeous.
More people would play these things if they weren't so damned expensive.
I agree. And if they were easier to reed!
AGAIN ANOTHER 1 PERSON DISLIKED A GREAT VID
Can't make everyone happy. Happy to have your support!
Wow 4 dislikes not bad
leave it to the irish to take an already complicated instrument and make it so over-complicated that you almost need two sets of arms
Have you guys heard of Catherine Ashcroft? She is amazing on these pipes
anthony jaramillo the more complicated it is the big yarn we can spin
