    Thanks so much for sharing the learning moments rather than just a perfected finished product. It's important for folks to see the process and learn to push through the difficult spots. Also I think that burned cup looked kinda cool.

    I just started my major in ceramics and sculpture, so I don’t have much advice to offer. However, I will say that a sponge or a smaller rib can be extremely effective at smoothing things out. I find that it doesn’t leave the streaks that you would get when using a brush to smooth things out, and it also to compresses the clay back together as you work. For tiny details like the corners of the paint palette, silicone sculpting tools work great. There are also more precise sponge tools that come cut a certain way so that you can reach smaller areas. Though, in some cases it can be easier to buy a sponge and cut it down. Denser sponges might be better for that purpose.

    if you want the under glaze to really pop, i would recommend 3 coats of it anywhere you use it! i learned that the hard way a few times during my hs pottery class. also if you want a nice rim on the bottom of a piece (where the glaze stops before the bottom of the piece) use wax! it will melt off in the kiln, but you do have to wipe off the glaze you might get on it before firing it. I love all the piece you made!! That sandy clay looks soooo nice fired

    I recommend you to make ceramic slip with the small clay rest, puting them inside a sealed cup with water, so you can use it as a "'clay glue". Also i dont recommend separating the glace in small containers if they are not well sealed bc they will dry! Amazing work as always ❤

  • @kittycarnage
    @kittycarnage 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +11

    I recommend an exacto knife or something similar for the cutting you do to the rims of cups! Those pottery knives aren’t designed to go through as easily for a more precise cut like that. Using any craft knife will be much easier when you’re cutting. The pottery knives are perfect for instances like the palettes, though!

      @@PearFleur also it might help if you let it firm up a bit more. as you're cutting the shape the cup deforms and clays, especially the laguna you were using at the start of the video have a 'memory' .Which means if the shape deforms, once you fire it (or sometimes even when it dries) it will revert back to that shape even if you compress it back to the original. if you firm let it firm up and use an exacto knife like the original commenter said, you will have an easier time cutting cleanly and precisely :)

    When I made my first clay palettes, the glass crazed for me too! They’re still usable, but the cracks have been dyed. If you use something like dr martins ink, it can kind of bond and seal in the crack and I haven’t had an issue with functionality after that!

    I’m liking the kitten in the background. It’s a sound I miss.
    I lost my two cats (19 yo m & 17 yo f) in the last two years. I miss the way they’d lay on my chest whenever I was laying on the couch. They’d tuck their little heads under my chin and purr and drool.
    Miss those mischievous lil buggers.

    Just an observation from a ceramics major, you could be using too much water, and it’s possible to make the clay too wet to where it just turns into slip and it can make it less durable in the long run.
    You can also refire pieces! The cracks and lines in the glaze aren’t from you pulling it out of the kiln too early, that’s called crazing. Crazing is where the glaze shrinks more than the clay, so it cracks. It’s still usable for paint, but if you want to refire it maybe you can try letting it cool for longer and maybe the glaze will remelt in a better way?

    This was very relaxing to watch. Something I popped on while trying to get my baby to sleep. I have a question though; I don't do ceramics, but I have dabbled with clays, wouldn't it be easier to roll out two thin slabs, cut them to the same size, and then just cookie cutter out your shapes from one of them, and place it on top of the other? Instead of trying to carve out the shapes from the one thick slabs? Please don't take my question as criticism, I loved watching you work, and honestly, I'd love to try to do something like this one day. I was just curious about techniques.

    • @agentpink9524
      @agentpink9524 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Not PearFleur, but having done some ceramics I think the reason is this: thin slabs of ceramic clay, esp when you have lots of shapes cut out of it (a lattice basically), would be really difficult to attach onto the flat bottom slab, both in laying it over (it may break), but also in making sure they stuck without any air bubbles or excess moisture differences from scoring and slipping (which can cause cracking when fired). Carving from a thicker slab would prevent that, since it's all from one unified clay piece, and lets you use non-cookie cutter shapes for the wells. And of course, less clean up too.
