    3:30 pushing watts on a KOM and Phil has the decency to respect another rider with the peace sign. You rock my man.

    Having just driven Latigo and thinking what an incredible ride it must be, your video makes clear that it was even more spectacular before the fire. Great ride and thanks for sharing.

    Having done this climb a few times, this video recalibrates my sense of what’s humanly possible. Absolutely crazy to see someone hold that much power for that long while I’m over here thinking I’m doing pretty good at half that. 😅

    Christ, the number of guys you had to swerve around that were riding almost on the center line... the dude at 20:09 especially. It's like they're completely oblivious to the fact that someone could be climbing faster than them.

      To the dudes credit, it was on a tight bend... He may have glanced back shortly before this speed demon overtook his goofy ass

    • @glaukopes
      @glaukopes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He didn't have to swerve around them. He could have and should have used his brakes and waited for a safe opportunity to pass instead of crossing a double yellow in the middle of a blind turn. Or he could have tried to shout at them to move over as he had plenty of time to see that they were taking the whole lane long before he reached them. Either way he doesn't have a right to race on open public roads unimpeded by slower traffic any more than cars have a right to unsafely overtake slower moving cyclists or vehicles in front of them. The traffic ahead has the right of way even if they are slower than you, and it's never safe to cross a double yellow in the middle of a blind turn like that.

    I just rode up Latigo 4 days before the fires (in double your time = l ). Other than the 6 super cars that zoomed together past me, it was a beautiful climb. We're all saddened to see footage of it burning at the moment.

    Phil, my name is Danny I'm in Tampa FL, I saw the vid you were in St. Pete and Clermont that was so rad... I ride in Madeira & st.pete beach to fort desoto beach sometimes...
    Question about ur shifters, upper right corner I see ur rear shifter is on the cam, (I also looked on comments to see if someone else was curious) I'm curious what brand are those since Shimano STI's upshift is inner lever and down shift is the brake handle, seems like u got to do one small click is up shift where one strong click is downshift... is that right? What kind of shifters are you riding with?
    This KOM video is da bom man your stamina is like Jedi master level keep up excellent work!

    20:08 buncha noobs. Geez. It's dangerous to ride close to the double yellow like that (not you Phil, the guy you had to pass). Fantastic ride Phil.

    • @glaukopes
      @glaukopes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's even more dangerous to cross a double yellow in a blind turn like that. Like it or not the slower traffic in front of you has the right of way and the proper response is to apply the brakes and wait for a safe opportunity to pass rather than swerving across a double yellow in the middle of a blind turn. We say the same thing about motorists all the time. It's hypocritical to say it's okay when a cyclist does it.

    • @brianmessemer2973
      @brianmessemer2973 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      glaukopes I don’t disagree with you. Let me put it to you this way: I would not have passed them that way. I’m pretty sure he expected the cyclist in the middle of the road to see him and move over, but he didn’t. I also think Phil is a former pro rider who knew based on the situation that no cars were coming in the opposite direction. Nevertheless it was sketchy and I don’t disagree with you.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@glaukopes The road was very quiet so it's possible he felt he'd be able to hear it if something was coming the other way. Also, it's hard to tell just what the visibility was from the fixed viewpoint of the camera. a rider's head is higher and not fixed pointing in one direction.

    • @tqubed
      @tqubed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@beeble2003 I have ridden Latigo dozens of times. Its pretty much an echo chamber and you can hear a car approaching in either direction from a half a mile away.

    • @glaukopes
      @glaukopes 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@beeble2003 Yeah that's possible. Though a collision with an oncoming descending cyclist wouldn't be very safe either. It doesn't just have to be a collision with a car to be dangerous. Not to mention the ever-increasing number of electric cars don't make as much noise and who knows what acoustic tricks could prevent noise from traveling through/around a corner like that. My main concern is that if we want to say that "I'm late for work" isn't a good excuse for motorists to recklessly endanger the lives of cyclists, then "I'm going for a KOM on an open public road" shouldn't be a good excuse for cyclists recklessly risking a head-on collision either.

  • @natonic6538
    @natonic6538 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    One time after doing some massive climbs in Italy, I was finishing the ride on a lesser climb. By that time I'd bonked and was going just fast enough to remain upright. A girl blew past me. She was JOGGING. That's the only thing I can think of that would be more demoralizing than having Phil blow by on a climb.

    That pass at around 20:00 crossing a double yellow while going around a blind turn was really dangerous. We cyclists need to practice what we preach when it comes to applying the brakes and waiting for a safe opportunity to pass rather than swerving into an oncoming lane when it isn't safe to do so just because we're in a hurry and impatient about slower moving vehicle(s) in front of us in our lane.

    • @donjonjr1
      @donjonjr1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cyclist that ride the yellow line like that for no reason other than to inconsiderately "own the road" when not needed because they have a right to, really pisses me off! All they do is agitate the drivers for the rest of us giving me and us a bad name resulting in more aggressive passes by motor vehicles. I wish this yellow line rider would think of his fellow riders and practice commonsense cycling. I don't know why Phil was so courteous to that guy by going around him. I would've passed on the inside of his righteous @$$ only to enjoy some of his enlightened wisdom of foolishness.
      But that's just me and my two cents. Let's go skip some stones now....
