Could someone please tell me why stores that sell dishware and knicknacks and stationary are called prop shops? From a theatre background I know props to be the set pieces that actors use to simulate real life through art. I LOVE words and like to know from where they come before assimilating them into my personal lexicon. Thank you, in advance, to anyone who might be able to shed some light on this. Thus far Google(and the rest of the internet) has failed me on this point.
