My first mod was KTM Rally pegs - nice. My second mod was trade it in for a Tenere 700, after the ADV-R's cam chain tensioner failed and KTM had no replacements available. That was an even better mod.
I have dropped my 890 ADV R 9 times (pavement and sand). So far nothing has broken. Only mods are very bright lights (for daytime visibility- Baja Designs), and a lower seat. Love the bike. 6,000 miles.
Thanks for watching and commenting I think there is a big random element when we drop the bike and also some luck involved with damage/ no damage. Love my lights for daytime visibility though my main reason was night time power for winter off road.
Thank you for the detailed video. Once my 890 arrives, I plan on installing the cycra pro bend handguards. I’ve been running them on my dirt bikes for years. I have done my best to even break the plastic part with much abuse but no success. I’ve heard they take a little modification to fit on the 890 but I’ve seen guys doing it on the web
You mentioned the decat would improve low end fueling. I was always told the opposite that it reduces low end torque, so to compensate better to drop one tooth on the front sprocket to lower the gearing. This is quite apart from the benefits off-road of lower gearing and also the avoidance of the heat issues on the cat that could cause problems when stuffed full of mud and leaves
Thanks for the comments which make a lot of sense- I've actually ordered a 48 tooth sprocket for the rear as this bike dose need slightly lower gearing for off road- second is just little too high for what I want.
Great video, nice to see the 890 being used and abused as was intended. I had the same thoughts re the engine bars but by the look of the flints you have down your way did you consider a bash plate?
Hi Kev and thanks for the comments. I had an interesting ride this evening which will be my next video. No spoilers but it’s made me reconsider a couple of things! Watch this space. And yes, tempted by a heavier duty bash plate- it all comes down to cost and risk and that balance has just shifted!!
Hi, I would recommend a rear brake master cylinder cover. Touratech makes one for the 890. Found out the hard way it's not very protected when my boot caught it and ripped the hose out.
Hi Jon and thanks for watching. The de cat conversion was done by the KTM dealer at their suggestion. The bike did not need a remap and I was told it does not invalidate the warranty. Have fun and ride safe.
It's the same how I gained mpg when I removed my dpf, cat, egr on my diesel truck. Those epa devices only hurt the engines ability to perform adequately. Removal of them only improve its lifespan and performance. Epa can get bent lol
@@beardedpatriot0 Your thinking the old pre computer days. Everything is tied together electrically now. A KTM 890 is way different from some truck. EPA shuts people down now a days for removing these parts on cars or trucks. Bent or not.
I asked that same question when it was suggested and was reassured it was legal as I was worried about that. I said it was controversial and I’m still not convinced and have kept the cat in case I want to change back. My conscience is not totally happy with it. Great question- thank you.
I’m very surprised the dealer suggested the De-cat, I’d have thought it could be a warranty issue. Secondly the extra noise it makes, although it might sound nice to us motorcyclist, its pretty annoying to the rest of society. I prefer a stealthy approach to riding the country lanes or green lanes. Last thing I want to do, is announce to the residents of countryside, that I’m about to shatter their peace and quiet. 😉I was out walking with family the other day at Chalke Valley, you could hear the bikes on the Ox Drove!
@@windinthewillows6248 it’s pretty quiet at the lower end but I do agree with you about being considerate to others and I’d hate to think I was causing irritation. What I’ve noticed is that the most important thing is being super considerate around others including turning the engine off for all other users, not just horses. It’s about our overall considerate and polite behaviour and not just about a slightly louder exhaust. I feel strongly about being an ambassador for bikers.
The trick with dirt and mud, is to not be riding/learning on a near 500 lb bike. A very simple trick. 9000 miles on my 890R no tip overs yet. My 890R came stock with the radiator guard.
Haha. Nice philosophy! I could only justify having one bike and I needed one for longer journeys as well as learning. The whole idea was to see if an off road Noobie could make it work. It’s been a steep learning curve and can’t remember the last time I dropped the bike touch wood!!

What a beautiful setup! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks Jody. I’ve got a Canada road trip in July but in a car and not on a bike! Shame.

Hi Mike R. Thanks for that- I’ve been on the fence about that mod so it’s great to hear a real world recommendation.
Done and it’s a nice bit of protection. Thanks for the suggestion.
With the De cat, Did you have to get the bike mapped to adjust the fuelling or was it o.k from the off ? and does in not invalidate the warranty ?

Ive never heard anyone say removing the Cat improved fueling, your mechanic is the one and only .
KTM designed it all as a system to work together.
You’re probably right though it is a KTM mechanic.

Interesting about the decat. Doesn’t that make the bike illegal and more polluting?

@@advnoobie6061 that makes a difference, I'll consider this too. I like all my bikes to be strictly road legal..
