The reason you don’t start Penix, is because you don’t want to put the weight of the world on him. If Kirk sinks the ship, oh well, he sunk the ship. But you have to let him do that by himself. After he has sank the ship, then you can play the rookie and it has no consequences on his mindset. He will know that he can play free and not be asked to be the hero. That’s why you don’t play the young guy now. You paid Kirk. You let him guide his ship as far as he can. If/when he sinks that ship, you give the young guy his own ship to guide. You don’t stick him on a ship that’s already filling up with water and ask him to save the day.
