Why Tracking Carbon Emissions Is Suddenly A Billion Dollar Opportunity

  • As extreme weather events roiled communities around the world this summer, businesses and governments are feeling more pressure than ever to respond to climate change.
    Tracking emissions has historically been difficult, because the methods for tracking a company’s carbon footprint are all over the place. In the U.S., corporate sustainability reporting remains unstandardized and largely voluntary. But the landscape looks better in Europe, as a recently adopted proposal is set to expand the number of companies that must produce sustainability reports. That measure will also require more detailed and standardized disclosures and impose mandatory audits.
    That’s where companies like Plan A and Planetly come in. These Berlin-based startups make software that helps companies monitor, report and reduce their carbon emissions, and the market for their services is booming. Meanwhile, apps like Klima, which help individuals offset their own personal emissions, are also growing rapidly.

  • @Mike__B

    Governments: You need to reduce carbon emissions
    Corporations: How about instead of reducing carbon emissions, we fund carbon reducing projects like planting trees, then we can have an economy based on carbon emissions. Then if there's a company that naturally doesn't create carbon emissions and never has we can buy their negative carbon emissions (that was always that way), and combined with our carbon emissions the math works out and we reduced emissions!
    Governments: That sounds logical... sure.
    It's the end of the world as we know it... and I feel fine...

    We need a way to attach the data about carbon footprint to a product, so that no matter where the product goes, the data goes with it. Then make products that have accurate data more expensive to add incentives. You could even extend this to conflict materials like cobalt and bad working conditions like rubber. Do the data captured in these tools reconcile with the output data from the oil, gas, and coal producers? As a reality check, it should not be difficult to compare the energy export and import data across country boarder, and against the data from energy consumption at the country and corporate level. Then we could have a better idea on how much data are unaccounted for.

    • @vinlago
      @vinlago 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not just oil, gas, coal - you'll need to add photovoltaic panel and lithium battery manufacturers. Don't forget that coal is required to charge those EVs when the sun isn't shining. Perhaps a return to horse & buggy with a manure collection system to recycle as fertilizer or bicycles for short jaunts.
      Nevermind the children, elderly and disabled who cannot walk or ride for long (or at all).
      It's for the planet.

    All of this data management is meaningless unless the source of the carbon emissions is accurately recorded. I'm not talking about some guy entering information into a database. I'm talking actual instrumentation precisely recording and logging in real time how much CO2 gas is leaving a particular facility.
    So my question is...how are these companies actually measuring the volume of CO2 gas going into the air?

      XPRISE CARBON CAPTURE
      The heat loss from a smokestack can be forced into a large tank containing hot liquid microcrystalline petroleum wax. The heat will keep the wax at a molten state which facilitate the carbon to be absorbed when combined with the wax. Carbon when mixed with wax reacts like a dye. The wax-carbon amalgamation result in a black wax solution thereby making it impossible for the carbon to escape into the environment. Other toxic particles are also captured in the wax settling at the bottom of the wax holding tank forming into a sludge. A sludge release valve is located at the bottom of the tank. After the sludge is removed more wax is replaced in the vessel working something like a toilet. The sludge becomes a byproduct that can be used as an additive to asphalt for roads or used for cocooning nuclear waste materials for long-term safe burial. The entropy of the Earth has been increasing at a startling rate since the beginning of the industrial revolution caused mainly by the carbon that is released into the atmosphere. Government scientists have failed to stop and prevent carbon pollution from entering the environment. This problem can only worsen until a solution is found before this problem becomes irreversible. It has been discovered that formulated wax has been shown to be the only answer to this problem. William Nelson

      Couldn’t agree more. Transparency and showback begins with standardization of these data sets at least on some level. The Climate Trace project aims to do this from an objective point of view. Trusted observability is going to be the challenge and this will require effective collaboration between public and private sectors.

      If you have invoices showing the exact amount of energy being used (natural gas or electric power for example), then you can accurately measure exactly how much emissions were produced.

    • @jamescrud
      @jamescrud 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fma891 Looking at an invoice may give you an overall view of energy used but some of that energy may not have contributed to producing CO2...therefore the invoice has no quantitative benefit for actual value measurement. It requires gas sampling equipment and mass flow sensors installed directly in the exhaust piping network then recording, analyzing, and logging the data in real time.

    @CNBC: Apparently, the narrator of this video has a voice that is so high-pitched, making it sound quite nasally, that it is not particularly easy to understand, making watching this video & following along to be closer to pointless than it should be. Continuing to retain this person as the narrator may not be a terrible idea, though; it would, definitively, certainly be a good idea to do something to the audio to make it easier to understand. And there is also the possibility that something else, other than the narrator's voice, in the audio is causing this distortion that makes the narrator's voice sound this way.

    So that's how Russia became the sole importer of feul to Europe. Great job guys, enjoy your winter.
    Only way any of this works is if you place import duties or taxes on other countries for their carbon emissions on the prodicts you consume, like you would your home country. All that is happening is that western countries are burdening their citizens with extra taxes and regulation. While at the same time becoming more dependant on those that don't care about the issue.
    Also let's be honest about batteries and solar pannels aswell. These aren't zero emmission products and require alot to produce and or charge after, let alone shelf life and disposal.
    Also nuclear has been demonized.
    These people are so eager to pat themselves on the back that they aren't actually coming up with solutions that mater. But good job.... keep "earning your money for the social good" 🙄

    This is stupid. Just tax the cost of capturing the CO2 that is produced for each product. For example if 1 liter of gas produces 1 square meter of CO2 tax what it cost to remove that CO2, same with plastic and any emitting inputs.

      The whole point is that its currently impossible to measure how much CO2 each product produces. It's also impossible to offset all the carbon we produce, because direct air capture isn't affordable yet. You would basically have to turn the entire Sahara into a rainforest or fill the whole ocean with algae.
