      Simple Happy Zen I tried this, when I started I would fail all the time. I just cannot appreciate to the point where I say “what’s the point”?
      But it has been a lot easier now since I started decluttering & minimizing. The process is making my decisions a lot easier than just go ahead and impulse buy. True most of the things- I do not need most are wants because I see others have them 😞. My daughter taught me a lot because she’s
      Into the 3 R’s. We bonded for a cause --reuse-reduce-recyle. My family calls it the 3 big R’s😊not just Eco-friendly.....to my wallet too🌍win-win😊 #thriftstoresfirst#usedisthenewfashion#sustainable#🌍#

      I have done a no spend challenge. It lasted a week, then I bought something I didn't need. I want to try it again for a lot longer, but candy is my weak spot. I have been keeping track of the things I buy though and whether it is a need or a want, and so far a good majority of them are needs. Need to stay away from the sweets!😀

    I diverted my mind on things free activity like reading , exercising and watching tv. I did a low buy for 6 months where I only bought things I ran out of and needed . I never bought anything not needed like clothes, shoes , accessories etc . I saved so much and honestly I did not miss anything . It gave me opportunity to use up a lot of things I spent money on and wasn’t using . The savings were so good. I will do it every year from now

    I have a 'no spend challenge' everyday working at a Walmart! They put cute stuff on ridiculous low sale, that REALLY is a challenge! I just overcame a floorlamp for $5 that has called my name for 3 days! I used the tips:
    1. wait a couple days
    2. does it fit in the 'budget'
    3. ask where it would fit
    in ur space.
    The waiting game made the feeling stronger to buy it. The budget was 👌. But when I realized how many light fixtures I own, I decided that No Need was why I chose not to buy. This is going to get easier, as I decide to ONLY buy consumables! Thanks Vera

      @SimpleHappyZen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah that's a great example :) I especially like the question about asking where it would fit. Sometimes we like something but when we bring it home, we realize we don't really have a good place for it. Thanks for sharing Jo-Ellen :)

    In addition to the “need” or “want” comparison, I ask myself “will this purchase add to my ability to earn more money” or “make my life easier” and then I calculate the return on investment. Example: new video equipment.

      Good job. Fortunately I've never been one of those people who gets roped into buying other things because unless I need it, I don't buy it. For example I'd always wanted to get an all in one jumpsuit/boilersuit as they are easy to wear and you don't have to think too much in terms of styling it so I just wanted one to throw on - I looked at the store to see if they had one I liked, found one pay for it and that's it. It can be tempting to look at other things but if I'm not in need of it, I don't buy it.

    Hello! Thank you for the wonderful video(s). This is where my head has been at since i retired at the end of 2018. Our planet doesn’t need more junk therefore i am trying to be more efficient by driving less, drinking less (not while driving), impulse buying less and not eating out as much. Not only does it cut down on expenses but it actually is a good vibe by not having useless clutter laying around. If i absolutely need to buy then i will go to the used market for bargains. I once had five guitars all at the same time and am now down to one. I will sell the one i have if i decide to buy another. It is amazing what little amount people can live happily on. I hope you too find happiness in SHZ’s teachings. She is a truly awesome human and is a shining beacon for the human race.

    Great video! What I do is a variation of “ no spend “, as in while shopping online,I put the things I feel the urge to buy in the shopping cart and don’t buy them right away. I give myself 2-3 weeks time to reconsider and in the end usually the urge has gone away and I delete the items , as most of the time these are the things I don’t need , but just want impulsively.😃

    Sometimes I will “go shopping” online. I tell myself if money were no object what would I buy? I fill my cart up to the point where it’s ridiculous like say $1000.00. It makes it very easy to walk away because that amount is so far out of reach for me that it’s real easy to walk away from my shopping cart in the end. This may not be a good approach for everyone but it’s a fun game that I like to play.

I make sure to use up what we have first and then buy....I keep a running inventory on my iPhone so I know what I have and therefore what I need and plan my menus for the week...it is nice not having so much stuff or more importantly being responsible for so much stuff...ownership has a price and mostly that ownership comes in the form of ongoing maintenance and worry...first it cost you money and then it costs you time, effort, management or just plain taking care of it....Hugs and as always ..great tips sweetie..

    As soon as we moved out we pretty much stopped non-essential shopping cold turkey. We started giving us a budget of $50 every week, taking it out of the bank and putting the remainder in a jar. We did not like going to the bank every week though so a month or two later we just stopped bringing the wallet with us and deactivated Apple Pay. Now a year later we can go out with the wallet and feel no need to spend on things we do not need. This was before we began to adopt a minimalist lifestyle and was purely financially motivated but now it has really helped with the process of decluttering and reorganizing because no new items are entering the home while we are trying to remove other items.

    Sales always seem to get me.. Yet when I do need something (like underwear, socks), I can guarantee it'll occur to me a week after the sale ended! However I did look at a sale today in my favourite shop and managed to not buy a single thing! I honestly think that felt better than walking out with a new top or pair of jeans. I was really happy with myself :)
    It's others around you that can make it difficult. I'm living in a constant struggle with my Dad who is a shopaholic and always has two or three of things, giving me the old item when he's bought a new one - thus giving me the guilt of "what do I do with this, put it in my home when I don't want it, or give it to Charity" and feel guilty and kind of angry either way because it's such a waste of money and I've told him several times that I just don't want another thing.. And my husband, he's always going to the most expensive thing assuming that means quality, or just buying this or that because he thinks It'll make one of us happy - it never works. It's nice of course, to be thought of, but then I'm left with the thing. I even said earlier, let's not do Christmas presents anymore, there's nothing we need, we ran out of ideas years ago and it just feels like one more thing to deal with!
    The worst of all is living in a bigger house than we need (I didn't want it.. he did.. and here we are).
    A bigger house means buying more stuff.. totally unnecessary.. I can't tell you how much of a struggle it is. I've even been prescribed antidepressants but I'd rather not take them, so I try and get around it by selling as much as I can of my own stuff, exercising to take my mind off things, doing anything I can.
    ..2 years ago I was 2 years into decluttering, making life simpler, making life easier, quicker (less time dusting/dealing with the junk), then it all got undone and then some!! Really hard to be with someone on a totally different page to you. Really hard.

    I have done "Frugal February" for the past 3 years. I do not spend on anything all month besides gas and groceries. The first year I did this my husband asked if we were really saving money on food because we were just spending so much on groceries (vs. Eating out more often). It just seemed like a lot of food and money on groceries. But that year I learned to cook better, meal plan, freeze meals, and waste less food. We spent $3,300 less that year on food than the previous year. Doing a no spend month trained my brain to really question purchases. It challenged me to get better at cooking. It made me use/wear/make due with whatever I have instead of automatically just going out and buying a new one. After waiting until March to buy some things, I would realize I didn't really need them after all. I noticed the most drastic change the first year, but I continue to do it very February. It's a good refresher but my spending habits have just been better since that first year so it doesn't seem as drastic every time now. The stricter you are with it the better you will train your brain. I highly recommend it!

      I used to buy BC I needed the "instant gratification " hen I would have buyers remorse. I have definitely curbed my shopping habits by putting things in my online cart...waiting a couple of days then go back and I usually end up deleting most of the things in my cart.

    All great tips and another beautiful video. I’m up for a no spend month so October 1st I’ll start. 😊 I always save $20 or so of my spending money and put it in a drawer. This goes towards my yearly trip to England to visit friends. I find if I’m frugal I can pay for the trip with the money I set aside each month.

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Maria! :) The best tip, I think, is to be intentional. Who do you really want to give a gift to? Which gifts would you like to buy them, and why? What is your spending budget, for each person and also total? Once you have figured these things out, it'll make it easier to be intentional and mindful with how much you're spending on gifts.

    The cash only budgeting / carrying only cash works for some people, but doesn’t work for me. For me cash just seems to disappear from my wallet and I can’t remember where I spent it. But if I spend money only on my debit/credit cards I can track every penny that I spend. Every time I buy lunch gets counted. I don’t buy anything in a vending machine (because I refuse to do that on a credit card). Then I can see that total at the end of the month (or sooner). I personally love the app/website Mint because you can link your cards and categorize all purchases. The $9 lunch may not seem like a lot, but at the end of the month the $120 you spent on lunches is OMG...

    example : i coffee addict and spend a lot on coffees, gonna try to bring my own, but I dont have bottle that cant save hot water. then what should i do ?buy it ?
    and kinda confused where and when should I start. (I had high ego). any idea ?

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If buying a good quality thermos that allows you to bring your own coffee will save you money (because you won't have to buy coffee to go anymore) then it's definitely a good investment. It's easy to calculate how many cups of coffee to go you would need to save in order to get the investment in the thermos back. Don't let yourself be persuaded to buy a really expensive, fancy one, just get a thermos that has good quality, that you like to use, and that you can keep using for a long time :)

One of them is not buying anything (apart from groceries). I have a brain injury and have great difficulty making decisions and forget what I bought. Solution: An advisor suggested an accountability partner who works on my budget at the beginning of the year and tells me how much I can spend each month without her prior permission. This works great and limits my choices to a predetermined amount. The carry cash only is a great solution and putting cash in envelopes with the budget item written on it also works. When the money is gone, that budget item has to be postponed till next month.

    My no spend year started June 2018. I ended up still having abt 20 items i bought and since i logged them, i could justify (replacements) and hold myself accountable (some definite regrets). It worked in that it put the brakes on shopping as entertainment. That same mentality continues to this day, its like brain re-training.

    If I see something in a store, pleasing to the eye, I take a picture of it instead of putting it in my basket. The Clutter Fairy in Houston also recommends “catch and release.” Fill your basket and instead of checking out, leave the store.
