The name ‘contingent being’ has always belonged to you and always will belong to you.” He said to me again, “Do you know who you are?” I replied, “Yes, I am in reality God (al-haqq). But, metaphorically and in relation to the Way, I am creature (al-khalq). I am a contingent being with respect to my form, but I can- not not be the necessary Being. It is the divine name al-haqq which belongs to me by original right (asl); the name of creature is only a borrowed name and a formula of differentiation (fasl). He said to me, “Veil this symbol; and let the wall fall down and bury this treasure, in order that only he will be able to extract it who has put his soul through severe trials and looked his death [rams: literally “his tomb” ] in the face.” Then God-may He be exalted!-said to me, “What are you?” | replied, “I am two things, according to two different relations. With respect to You, I am the Eternal, forever and ever. I am the necessary Being who epiphanizes himself. My necessity proceeds from the necessity of Your essence and my eternity from the eternity of Your knowledge and Your attributes. “With respect to me, I am pure non-being who has never breathed the perfume of existence, the adventitious being who remains nonexistent in his adventitiousness. I only possess being so long as I am present with You and for You. Left to myself and absent from You I am one who is not, even while he is (fa-and mafqud mawjaid).” Then He said to me, “And who am I?” I replied, “You are the Being, necessary through Itself, alone perfect in Its essence and Its attributes. Better yet: You transcend by the perfection of Your essence the perfection of Your attributes. You are the Perfect in every state, the Transcendent with respect to everything which can come to the mind.” He replied to me: “You do not know Me!” I said to Him without fear of being disrespectful, “You are He in Whose likeness all contingent creatures are. You are the Lord and the servant, the near and the far. You are the One and the multiple, the Sublime and the lowly, the Rich and the poor, the worshipper and the Worshipped, the contemplator and the Contemplated. In You are joined the contraries and the opposites. For You are the Apparent and the Hidden, the voyager and the sedentary, He who sows and He who cultivates. You are He who plays, who tricks and who deceives. You are the supreme Reality and I am the supreme Reality. You are creature and I am creature. You are neither this nor that and I am neither this nor that.” He said to me, “That is enough. You know Me! Hide Me from those who know Me not. For Lordship has a secret and if it were revealed, Lordship would be annihilated.” And servitude also has a secret and, if it were revealed, servitude would be annihilated. Common Concept of God in Hinduism:
BHAGAVAD GITA
The most popular amongst all the Hindu scriptures is the Bhagavad Gita.
Consider the following verse from the Gita:
"Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures."
[Bhagavad Gita 7:20]
The Gita states that people who are materialistic worship demigods i.e. ‘gods’ besides the True God.
UPANISHADS:
The Upanishads are considered sacred scriptures by the Hindus.
The following verses from the Upanishads refer to the Concept of God:
"Ekam evadvitiyam"
"He is One only without a second."
[Chandogya Upanishad 6:2:1]1
"Na casya kascij janita na cadhipah."
"Of Him there are neither parents nor lord."
[Svetasvatara Upanishad 6:9]2
"Na tasya pratima asti"
"There is no likeness of Him."
[Svetasvatara Upanishad 4:19]3
The following verses from the Upanishad allude to the inability of man to imagine God in a particular form:
"Na samdrse tisthati rupam asya, na caksusa pasyati kas canainam."
"His form is not to be seen; no one sees Him with the eye."

THE VEDAS
Vedas are considered the most sacred of all the Hindu scriptures. There are four principal Vedas: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samveda and Atharvaveda.
Yajurveda
The following verses from the Yajurveda echo a similar concept of God:
"na tasya pratima asti
"There is no image of Him."
[Yajurveda 32:3]5
"shudhama poapvidham"
"He is bodyless and pure."
[Yajurveda 40:8]6
"Andhatama pravishanti ye asambhuti mupaste"
"They enter darkness, those who worship the natural elements" (Air, Water, Fire, etc.). "They sink deeper in darkness, those who worship sambhuti."

Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol, etc.
The Yajurveda contains the following prayer:
"Lead us to the good path and remove the sin that makes us stray and wander."

Brahma Sutra of Hinduism:
The Brahma Sutra of Hinduism is:
"Ekam Brahm, dvitiya naste neh na naste kinchan"
"There is only one God, not the second; not at all, not at all, not in the least bit."
Thus only a dispassionate study of the Hindu scriptures can help one understand the concept of God in Hinduism.
