Harley Exhaust Systems Aren't Always What You Want and Need

  • Harley exhaust systems are rarely the look you want AND the performance you need. It's always a compromise between the looks and the performance but there are some things you can do to help get the look you want and still get the most from all your upgrades. Certain systems perform better than others but through baffles and some tricks on the touring bikes you can help yourself out and tailor your power where you want it. Baffles make a big difference no matter what style of exhaust you choose, but remember you have to pick what's most important. All out looks or all out performance, or do you want to fall in the middle with a compromise?

      I like the sound of 1/1 like short shots but some said that this kills power 😂 I have the z900 for speeding, this is a HD I don’t wanna go 180mxh

      My buddy has a sawicki pipe on a cammed 103 that he built a thunderheader style "cone" and it sounds phenominal

    Best sounding bike I ever had was a 1991 1200 sportster with straight 1 3/4" drag pipes, no baffles, but torque cones added for back pressure. Eventually had to remove them and return to stock because I was using the bike for work and leaving at 6am.

    Factory headers ,titanium wrapped with polished stainless slash cut extensions and thunder torque inserts. No low end torque loss and all that drag pipe goodness. 04 FXDI

    I ride a ‘98 Electra glide classic with Vance and Hines True duals. I love everything about them. Eliminating the crossover pipe really cleans up the engine and they sound great. If I’m sacrificing something I don’t notice it.

    1993 Your Glide Ultra Classic with Cobra True Dual and stock mufflers. Andrews EV 13 cam, single fire ignition and 2 teeth bigger on the front sprocket. Sooooo smooth at 70, starts talking to ya at 80, starts to stretch out 90.
    I was out at 6:30 this morning in the middle of nowhere. I slowly passed a freight train running along the highway, it was at least a half mile long. I was running 80, took 20 miles to pass it. I really needed that.

    I left my stock exhaust on my 2019 ultra 107. For the same price for a new exhaust and only gaining a few HP I put in a 468 cam, new oil pump and cam plate and got over 30 HP, great torque using a chance and Hines tuner. The sound came to life and sounds better than anything else I've heard.

    I love the sound of Thunder header pipe on my Dyna ! A bit expensive..
    But nothing sounds and looks as good...CycleShack slip ons, our cheaper ! Because they don't say
    Screaming Eagle...You'll save about $100.00 For the drag pipe slip ons salami cut ! Is my preference or cup of tea..

    Great video. My current ride is a 2016 FLTRU. I bought it new, and when I brought it home I took my wife on a short ride to show it off. When we got back I said how you like it? She said my right foot is burning up! Huh what? I didn’t know Harley started putting cats on the bikes. My trade in was a 08 FLHTCU. Well that exhaust was came off ASAP. Happy wife, happy life. I put on the V&H HP headers and the SE Fat Shots tunable mufflers.

    I'm kind of surprised you didn't mention the Vance & Hines "Power Dual" X pipe. I have one on my 2013 Ultra Limited with Vance & Hines HO slip ons. I love the look, sound and seat of the pants feel of the combined system.

    Got a 2020 softail fxst 107 gonna go with 2into2 rhineharts. Its a lite bike, 297kg, got enough power for this new rider. Thanks for the vid

    A full 2 into 1 Exhaust system like a Thunderheader is best for the most gains in horsepower and torque. And Thunderheader sounds good, deep, etc. Some sound better than others. 2 into 2 dual exhaust sounds and looks the best IMO, but the performance isn't as good. Rinehart Racing I know used to make a 4 stepped header design dual exhaust that was supposed to be very good for performance, and then you still had the look and sound of a dual exhaust. Like he said in the video you have to decide what's most important to you. Drag pipes are usually the loudest, and I'm not knocking anyone who has those, but me I've always liked more of a powerful, deep rumble. And also drag pipes don't do much for power increases unless they are a stepped design.

    2013 Electraglide police, decated head pipe,v+h slipons runs and sounds good. Had a 07 Electraglide with cams and other things put a 2into1 pipe on it, made a big difference on that set up

    2003 Dyna w/S&S 509g complete camchest upgrade tuned carb w/A/C upgrade and Basani 2-1.. Low rumble at idle but, huge sound @ FWO

    I wanted stage 1 for my 2001 Sportster... got V&H Shorts. They sound hard core... more than I expected.😊 I can live with it.

    I have a bassani road rage one my 16 electra glide it looks and sounds sick just sits a little to low and harder to check fluids with the bends but those 2 things arnt worth getting a new pipe everything else on my bike has been done for a comfort and performance point not looks thanks for the vid gix have a good weekend

    Nice video, I'm running a stock header pipe from a heritage on my 21 street bob since they got the crossover and warrant more room for bags. Cut the baffles out of my stock slips, retained the cats and added some Thunder Torque Inserts, so far the stock 114 runs strong even without a tune.

    I have a 2016 cvo limited. I'm running V & H power duals with twin slash oval slip-ons k & n air filter and tuned with fp3 tuner. Bike runs and sounds good and is considerably cooler now. Never dynoed but gets around 38 to 40 mpg

    2014 cvo limited,s&s 570 cams,bored 10.5 compression, Rinehart slim line duals into v and h 4.5 high output mufflers tuned 107 hp 114 torque...perfect for me ,love it!!!

    I like the 2-1. Very classy. I'm doing a 1936 mockup on my 883 sporty. So really thinking of the old fashioned 2-1 straight pipe.

    I have a '98 Fat Boy with a 80in evo. I run the 2 into 1 thunderheader. I love the look and sound. The 2 into 1 is my first choice. I also like the 2 into 2 look and sound of the Vance and Hines short shots.

    I did a screaming eagle stage 2 torque cam upgrade on my 21 Electra glide standard which included head pipe and 4.5 in street cannons. Performances everything I expected and the truth is the M8 engine does not sound like Dad's 63 duoglide or my 07 FLHTCUSE2 with Reinhardt slip-ons

    I have v&h 2-1 big radius on my 2010 fat bob. I love the looks of it, and the sound is turning heads. Dont know why v&h discontinued this system… I love it!

    The only engine mod I have made to my 2020 Road King 107 is replacing the stock mufflers with Khrome Werks 4.5 slip ons. It gives me more than enough power and torque and it doesn't sound too bad either.

    I run the Cobra Pro Chamber headers with the V&H 450 Torquer slip-ons on my 2019 SGS, they do have baffles however they are really loud. 114 with the S&S 475 as well, Tuned with a DV2-b and target tune, wideband sensors, it runs great.

    2013 FLD Switchback, S&S MR 103 cam, support plate, lifters, adj. pushrods, decatted stock head pipe, SuperTrapp Nightstick 10 disc, open end cap, great torque and deep throaty roar.
    Killer mid range, no downshifting to pass, just twist and go. D W

    My ideal exhaust is my 2 into 1 on my 107 CI M8 Sport Glide. Gonna put all the money I've saved not doing mods on my HD and put it towards a BMW R18 Bagger used, instead, and then have 2 bikes to ride! Variety is the spice of life!

    Gotta remember some restriction to create velocity is key to a good eorking exhaust, thats why 2 into 1s shine because they balance the exhaust pulses by merging together. I currently have se "offroad race" mufflers and a crossover headpipe on my 80" evo, sounds great but i want to go to 2 into 1 for performance reasons

    2003 Road King ......Broken Y pipe and having to remove exhaust every time to check tensioners , I decided to junk the entire system. I replaced it with 2=1 , one unit Patriot Defenders. Improve performance and cut down wrench time when having to remove them.

    I'm running to Reinhart Slimline duals with four and a half inch Rinehart mufflers and a Rinehart moto inverted air cleaner on a 2017 Ultra Classic m8 107. Tune with a tts tuner and dyno 112HP and 120 Ft/PD torque .

    2016 FLHTK. MR103C Cam. V&H power duals and V&H oversized 450 slip ones. FP3 tuner. Does excellent.
    Had some V&H monster V slip ons. Ran well but the shields always rattled and I wasn’t too crazy about the look.
    Tried some Firebrand baritone slip ons with a tune from V&H on the FP3. That was terrible. Ran rich and stumbled off idle. Got 28mpg.
    Got the oversize 450s on a “make offer” table at a dealer. Gave $200 for them brand new in box! Getting low 40s mpg and it runs great now.

    I have 2001 FLHRCI with a s&s 106" stroker... with true duals using klock werks double back headers and thunderheader slip ons
    When I had motor done the dyno reading was
    110hp
    114 lbs trq.

    I have a V&H power duals with Freedom Racing slip ons for my Limited, and some V&H big radius pipes on my FatBoy. Both bikes have a tuned stage 1. The TC 103 with the power duals has all the power I need even when I’m riding 2 up, and those big radius pipes on an TC 88 sound great. I may lose a bit of torque but I have more than enough to suit me.

    Back in the day, I ran open "shorty" pipes on my Iron Head. Everyone loved the blue flames coming out behind me, and you could hear it a couple miles away. I think that was my favorite setup. Ive run V&H stepped drag pipes on.my Hertage and the "Big Radius" pipes on my Standard. My Electra Glide Classic had stock exhaust with SE slip-ons. To me, riding a Harley Cruiser is as much about the looks and sound as the performance. I don't care if a 2 into 1 exhaust would have shaved a tenth of a second off my quarter mile time. But that's just me.

    I always wanted an upswept 2-1, nobody makes one so I made my own. I used a cobra swept header pipes paired with a vh strata liner pro pipe muffler with 2.5 inch collector, its perfect on my 110ci Yamaha warrior. Of course there are no baffles in this pipe, turned my own reverse cone tip. no Harley can touch this thing.....ever. 96k miles, never missed a beat and never beaten, and of course being a Yamaha its never leaked anything, never broken. When I rode Harleys I could break them every weekend, usually throwing a primary chain through the cases racing.

    My Road King has V&H true duals with Thunderheader Thundercones and my Fat Boy has Rinehart 2-into-1. I love both. Different tools for different uses

    I like the stock muffler on my Buell because it is quiet.. I still have the stock exhaust system on my Yamaha FZ-07 because it is quiet and aftermarket are so expensive..

    Got Vance & Hines 2 into 2 on my Fatboy. If I could afford a touring bike I would probably be satisfied with slip-ons with sound and low end torque being my target.

    My 2012 street glide I run V&H 2 into 1into 2 headers with tab 4” mufflers. Torque is real good as well as hp. My 2012 CVO I run fuel moto headers that are much like the V&H along with their 4” mufflers. Great sound and pretty good performance. As with most of us it’s always a work in progress. I gotta say the tab mufflers are damn loud!!!!! Lol

    Got Gallop Motorcycles exhaust on my 09 ultra classic trike. Og staggered SE baffled out on my 05 lowrider. Straight piped up swept fish tail duals on the 81 fxwg Shovel 🤙🤘.

    Running S&S Power Tune True Duals with MK45s on my 2013 Ultra Classic Electra Glide. Currently using Wood TW-222s. Considering the 110 Big Bore kit and Wood TW-777s, and better heads.

    2010 FLHTK with a camed (S&S 583) and tuned 103. I use Bassani 2x2 duals as it was the only exhaust guaranteed to fit the bike with my mechanical reverse gear. I chose to use the Screaming Eagle slip ons I had the bike fitted with when it was new. Turns out to be an excellent combination. Performance is great, but the sound is awesome. Nice deep proper Harley rumble at idle, screams when wide open, but most importantly to me, the sound mellows at highway speed. No headaches from the noise when I am scooting down the road at 70. Of course, no catalytic convertor in this set up so the bike running temp dropped considerably.

    2 into 1. S&s sidewinder. Race pipe on a 22 road glide limited. Awesome pipe. Sounds like a Jake brake. When letting off the gas.

    I have a 2020 XL1200X Forty-Eight. Stock headers with Vance and Hines straight shot slip on pipes, K&N high flow air filter and A.P.E. cam upgrade. Got 96hp out of it now....a bit better than stock.....and yeah its loud.😊

    Fortunately I'm on a dyna so I don't have to worry about "ghost pipes" and such... Bassani rr2, it's a 2 into 1 that looks good, sounds good because of the motor work, and supports the motor well.

    I have cobra power port duals with screaming Eagle street cannons 103” Andrews 57 H cams and .030 head gaskets 10:1 - 116 TQ & 108 HP. Not bad for 103
    It sounds great. Forgot to mention had the heads cnc’d at zippers most mild cnc they do

    Hey Gixx, agree totally with you. Ran short shots on my 2011 Blackline stock and loved the sound! Did a Gixxer inspired rebuild 110, MVA heads S&S 625 cams and big compression. Went with a TBR 2 into 1. Happy to sacrifice some pure sound for performance.

    1996 FLSTF has a set of White Brothers Shot Gun drags , not the best for power but I’ve been running them for 27 years and they won’t come off . 2013 FXDWG has a set of stainless Stealth 2-1 and I think it’s a great pipe

    For sound is hard to beat drag pipes. Some two into ones sound really good too. I'm currently running screaming eagle slip ons on the factory headers with crossover

    No matter what exhaust you put on, it won’t make much difference until you take that factory restricter plate off of your intake, and put on a good free flow air cleaner. Then of course you have to reflash the ECM.

    I have the VH big shot staggered with a VH tune and Rhinehart racing air cleaner, has a good rumble to it while giving me some performance.

    2006 deuce. V&H short shots with no baffles and S&S 409 cams. Unreal sound. Neighbours know when I'm around.

    Have a 19’ Breakout Special with a Stage II S&S 475 cam
    Had run the V&H Slingshots, but switched over to the Bassani Road-Rage, 2 into 1
    Not happy with the sound from this combo, and it looks like Bassani doesn’t offer a quieter baffle

    Had a Thundedrheader on my 04 Road King when I bought. Loud and bike ripped when you were on the throttle. Just too loud for me. Did some cam chest work since I found major problems (bearing failure killed a lot) and went with a 2 into 1 Supertrapp. Had to get it all tuned anyway but much better overall power and so much quieter. Still has good rumble when you get on it though

    2008 heritage classic , andrews 48h cam , just installed a SE 103 big bore kit , have cobra power pro 2 into 1 exhaust . Sound could be a little deeper . Performance is excellent.

    I got a 03 deuce 88 to 107 conversion, and it has supertrapp mean mother drag pipes with baffles. It made 112hp and 119tq on the dyno. I love the way it sounds but could get more out of it with an RB racing exhaust. Maybe I will do it In the future, I think there 2 into 1s look great, and I know they perform.

    I have a touring 2021 road glide limited 114 and I am running a Tab 2-1-2 head pipe with 4" slip on and its a great comb

    My02 flhtcui has s&s power tune duals with Reinhart slipons attached to the 106 stroker. While the engine builder is always trying to talk me into a 2-1 system,I’m sticking with this set up as I like the sound of it and I’m more interested in low end torque than I am in peak hp numbers.
    My wife’s 07 flhrse3 on the other hand has a built 110 with a super lumpy set of cams and a v&h pro pipe on it. That thing sounds like the world is coming to an end just sitting there idling. I love it as well though we have to be a bit cautious riding through certain cities around here.

    I ended up with the long shots (with "power" chamber) with "quiet" glass pack baffles from V&H for my Wide Glide. It has that deep growl without the open pipe BLAT BLAT BLAT nonsense.

    On my 2013 Road King, I have tried a number of aftermarket slip-ons, but keep returning to the stock exhaust. My wife and I put in some awfully long days on this bike, and the noise from any aftermarket muffler seems to go right up the back of the saddlebags and into her helmet. She doesn't complain on shorter "local" rides, but it does get to her over the course of a longer day. Besides, with her on the seat behind me, that Twin Cam 103 has more than enough power to get her slapping the side of my helmet when I get a bit too enthusiastic.
    My 1976 XLCH is running Cycle Shack slip on, essentially stock replacement style mufflers on cut down 1 3/4" dia drag pipes used as head pipes. I have run the OEM headpipe with the crossover but, unfortunately, it does not clear the float bowl on the S&S Super "E" that I installed, oh, 40 years ago... I do remember how much better it ran with the crossover pipe when it still had the Keihen carb on it. I should see if I can work something out to get a crossover to clear the S&S. They DO make a difference.

    On my 2021 Street Glide i have Cobra True Dual headers & Cobra Neighbor Haters as the mufflers, sounds great and not obnoxious. I cant stand the look of 2-1, sure it costs me a bit of performance but not enough to care about and i dont go around racing my Street Glide anyway.
    On my Harley Rocker C, i have the V&H Big Radius 2 - 2
    Happy with the look and sound on both bikes

    2019 Tri Glide with stock headers, and Tab 4.5 w/Zombie baffles. It's a bit loud when I lay on the throttle. After new cams and a tune, she pulls 103HP and 130TQ and I can get the front wheel up off the ground. Not bad for a busted up old man with aftermarket replacement knees on three wheels.

    17sgs 107stock head pipe with cat left side capped off with svt jackhammers good sounds and capped the but Dyno likes it .just modded pipe installing 117 top end this week

    I have a Stage 2, TC88, with Samson true duals but stock RK mufflers. Lovely and quiet with more torque lower down than stock. Most importantly the crappy cam chain tensioners are gone.
