  • transiting one of the fastest tidal narrows completely under sail Seymour narrow can bring currents up to 16knots and has claimed many lives before the removal of ripple rock in a massive explosion.

    Love the video, how much does your boat weigh? Also how big is your electric motor?

    • @sailingokasolo6801
      @sailingokasolo6801  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the boat weighed in at 22000lbs and the motor is 12kw (16hp) battery is 335ah @ 48v lifepo4

    was always thinking about sailing the Johnstone Strait, but just don't know how to do with the rapid currents. until you show me the way here, thank you!

      As long as you time the current to be favorable its actually nice to go super fast at times my record speed was thru seymour narrows at 15.5knots speed over ground making about 5 knots under diesel engine with 10 knots of current pushing OKA

    I made several trips as a wee lad on my father and grandfather's halibut boat before Ripple Rock was blasted out. My eyes were like saucers as we passed by the then enormous whirlpools. A fine memory among many. In the ensuing years, the last I counted in 1980 I'd already made the trip between Petersburg and Seattle 38 times; I've long since lost count. I'm really glad to see you doing what you're doing. Maybe we'll pass by one of these days when I get my motor sailer switched over to all electric with a diesel backup generator.
    Congratulations on the choices you've made!

    How is the electric power working out vs diesel.

    • @sailingokasolo6801
      @sailingokasolo6801  ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean its obviously a little different but im happy with it, if you wanna go fast and non stop stick with diesel.

      @@sailingokasolo6801 i wonder if you could have a regenerative circuit or modified alternator to generate electricity while the motor is off.

    • @sailingokasolo6801
      @sailingokasolo6801  ปีที่แล้ว

      Im not sure what you meanwith the alternator. The motor itself will produce regeneration under sail but the hull shape of my boat makes it not very efficient as the propeller is enclosed by the keel and rudder. It will produce aprox 200w at 6 knots

    Love the drum winch! I built mine many years ago and it's been on the last three boats that I've had. The left hand motor is still working very well!

    • @sailingokasolo6801
      @sailingokasolo6801  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love my winch its a bit ugly but never fails! Ive always hated the idea of keeping smelly anchor rode in the chainlocker and corrodes faster in there

    I felt the stress of getting into discovery harbour, more batteries required i think :-)

  • @schudi5755
    @schudi5755 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you use regen for your batteries? How many amps do come in at 10kts?

    • @sailingokasolo6801
      @sailingokasolo6801  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats current is pushing the boat at speed over ground pf 10 knots while only doing about 3-4knots through water so not producing any regen unless im making steady 6 knots or more through water as i have a fullkeel and ruder enclosing the prop, id have to be anchored in 10 knots of current for it to produce any regen.

    Actually just found your channel a couple of days ago. Awesome. You have a great perspective for life and how to live it, and I am totally blown away by you attitude and capabilities! BTW, you have impeccable taste in selecting a great boat. :)

      @sailingokasolo6801  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I actually spent two years looking all over for an endurance and found this one anchored in squamish covered in moss and full of water but is still took a few months to convince the owner to sell it to me, its been a lot of work refitting but so worth it!

      To be fair I know these narrows pretty well now but the first gew times i didn't know that tide charts and current charts were not the same and that slack was not at the same time as low or high tide and has definitely lead me to some hard learning situations

  • @LouisBackover
    @LouisBackover ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Adorable how your dog is waiting in anticipation for the anchor to come up.
    In the future can you show or talk about your windless setup? Looks like you keep all the rhode outside up on the deck and have another windless not being used up by the pulpit.

    • @sailingokasolo6801
      @sailingokasolo6801  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ill get better shots next time but here is an older video where i show the drum winch
      th-cam.com/video/yHbd4KjdlOk/w-d-xo.html
      The other windlass is actually broken the gears inside bent trying to retrieve my anchor after a 45knots blow so my friend slapped the drum together with scrap pieces of stainless, I like not having the stinky anchor rode inside the boat anymore!
