These are tools that can be used by anyone, making fakes quickly much more common, lessening the likelihood that only certain rich operators get to manipulate us for a time. It will accelerate us to a time of signing videos at source and/or other public/private key methods that will help protect us from the liars and cheats and help us identify true copies. They had systems that could fake a person saying whatever they wanted with just a short audio sample about 20 years ago -- the US Army demonstrated it to Colin Powell. This time has come, the most we can do is work out how to protect the innocent. Open source is a helper in this, not an enemy.

This is why I'm opposed to Amazon's new forced facial recognition requirement policy for all truck drivers. Located in the trucks it scans and records the employee's face and stores it. This could soon create a market for companies to sell your face like they sell your cell phone number and email address. Not counting the ways it could be misused and the number of times it could actually be used to blame it on a black guy.
There is a huge technology gap on Earth. We have people who design robot spacecraft that can land on Mars or do a fly-by of Pluto but at the same time there are tribes of people still living in the stone age. And there is everything in between.
There are several solutions to that issue, in fact. But it's a different issue, since you can (and people do) create deep fakes that appear to be someone filming someone else.

The next step is for someone to create a way for us all to watermark or brand our official likeness in a way that can't be replicated by the fraudsters. So when you watch someone, you know it's the real person vs the fake. At least I hope that's in the works.
It already exists - it's the person's face. While AI generates these deepfake images, people are also training other AI to spot when an image is a deepfake, even if the human eye can't. It's a digital arms race, basically.
I think there are going to be multiple forms of tracking authenticity, including as mentioned AI using counter verification techniques. This tech already exists within deep fake tech itself. Other potential forms of verification could exist in decentralized tech, including NFTs where authenticity of a digital asset is used in a sense as a watermark.
I think simplicity is always the best solution, keeping with our verified accounts, and possibly using meta data of videos, the way they used photo meta data to catch McAfee in Belize. Even though I hate the idea of limiting anything, I don't believe it should be as easy as downloading an app, there should be some restrictions to deapfake technology.

I find it irritating when the title of the video does not correspond to the video's content. The title of this particular video promises that it will tell us "How To Spot “Deep Fake” Videos Online", and yet it doesn't
The host did try to ask that and the takeaway was that you can't. Yeah it's a bit of a leading title to generate views but media makes its money on views. It's far from the worst offender that I've seen; at least they touch on the question even if the answer is unsatisfying. But that's just the reality with this technology.
The technology still needs to be tweaked yes it looked like Cruise, Obama and Putin but you only had to listen to know it wasn't really them, especially Putins voice and Obama's.
If you pay close attention they are a bit rough around the edges, but it's still incredibly convincing. If you combine it with artificially low video quality made to look like a cell phone recording to mask some of the imperfections I could see this becoming nigh indistinguishable from the genuine artifact in the next 5-10 years. The Tom Cruise fake is already within a stone's throw.

Cruise has had a library of digital assets made of his face so they can de-age him in films (rather noticable in Edge Of Tomorrow I thought)... the point being, he's a unique case. I witnessed this technology live almost 5 years ago at SVVR. It's already time to question everything you see and it will come down to a) Trust b) Confirming multiple sources. Faking 1 video is one thing. Faking multiple, from different angles, then distributing them organically; that will take a much larger effort with more room for error.

One thing I noticed about these deep fake samples is that they aren't close up, May be that can be a clue to start telling what may or may not be fake.

The next step is for someone to create a way for us all to watermark or brand our official likeness in a way that can't be replicated by the fraudsters. So when you watch someone, you know it's the real person vs the fake. At least I hope that's in the works.
It already exists - it's the person's face. While AI generates these deepfake images, people are also training other AI to spot when an image is a deepfake, even if the human eye can't.
It's a digital arms race, basically.
I think there are going to be multiple forms of tracking authenticity, including as mentioned AI using counter verification techniques. This tech already exists within deep fake tech itself.
Other potential forms of verification could exist in decentralized tech, including NFTs where authenticity of a digital asset is used in a sense as a watermark.
A possible solution with terrifying dystopian potential...
I think simplicity is always the best solution, keeping with our verified accounts, and possibly using meta data of videos, the way they used photo meta data to catch McAfee in Belize. Even though I hate the idea of limiting anything, I don't believe it should be as easy as downloading an app, there should be some restrictions to deapfake technology.

If it's open to the public then that's it. It's a tool and not one that is necessarily going to be used for criminal purposes, but can be. Like guns.
I find it irritating when the title of the video does not correspond to the video's content. The title of this particular video promises that it will tell us "How To Spot “Deep Fake” Videos Online", and yet it doesn't
The host did try to ask that and the takeaway was that you can't. Yeah it's a bit of a leading title to generate views but media makes its money on views. It's far from the worst offender that I've seen; at least they touch on the question even if the answer is unsatisfying. But that's just the reality with this technology.

The technology still needs to be tweaked yes it looked like Cruise, Obama and Putin but you only had to listen to know it wasn't really them, especially Putins voice and Obama's.
Which can also be faked with a bit more effort in sound engineering on the file.

If you pay close attention they are a bit rough around the edges, but it's still incredibly convincing. If you combine it with artificially low video quality made to look like a cell phone recording to mask some of the imperfections I could see this becoming nigh indistinguishable from the genuine artifact in the next 5-10 years. The Tom Cruise fake is already within a stone's throw.

I really thought the video of the interviewee would end up being a deep-fake! I was even starting to convince myself it would end up being Ari’s expressions morphed onto someone like Nigella Lawson or Megan Fox. It is really a scary prospect if we do end up always having to second guess every video clip we see.
Cruise has had a library of digital assets made of his face so they can de-age him in films (rather noticable in Edge Of Tomorrow I thought)... the point being, he's a unique case. Without having those kind of scans it's still hit & miss. None of those other clips looked or sounded authentic... just weird.

Faking 1 video is one thing. Faking multiple, from different angles, then distributing them organically; that will take a much larger effort with more room for error.

Deep fakes can only copy one thing right either the likeness of the individual or his voice both don't come out perfectly without professional video editing software the ones used for movie editing. It isn't impossible to notice the difference but average people do get fooled if they see it once and don't catch that moment
Legislation which require ALL videotaped information to be identified as either authentic OR artificially manipulated. Verifying the identities of all participants, etc.
She says it towards the end there, after saying it started cropping up 5 years ago, I want to think that it's been around for longer than 5 years, but that _is_ about the time that the easing of technology made it more available for just about anyone to do it, as opposed to just a few people with the technical skill.
