- When it comes to combative knife design, there is no shortage of opinion out there. Whether they’re martial artists, tactical trainers, military veterans, or simply folks who think they know better, everyone seems to have strong convictions as to the form of the perfect fighting knife. So how does the would-be knife buyer separate wheat from chaff? Experience.
All the best knife designs come from expert knife users. If someone doesn’t have an intimate understanding of the application of the tool, his or her opinions are only theory. And when it comes to edged-weapon design, the keys to achieving that understanding are intensive training and real-world operational experience. J. Kelly McCann, the designer of the Spyderco Canis, has both of those in spades.
Michael Janich is a great asset to Spyderco. Honest, concise, professional and well spoken. Well done.
Why isn't the Canis made in Colorado?
Michael Janich does a great job with explaining the mechanics and the use of knife design. Not only do I carrythe Yojimbo 2 but I've had a Canis for a couple years and it's a excellent EDC folder.
👍👍🔪
I carry yojimbo 2 cru wear daily and love it. I wouldn't mind picking up a canis also
I absolutely love the canis and the yojimbo designs they are beautifully done y'all definitely knocked them way out of the park
I bought this knife 5 months ago and I love it. It's sharp as hell, cuts realy great. Blade looks amazing, handles are very comfortable. I have Para 2 and Endura too but this knife is my favourite one. Thank you Spyderco :)
That was very interesting. Well done. I happen to have the Canis and love it, but honestly wasn't aware of all the thought process behind the design. I wish every knife designer gave a similar insight to the design of their specific blades. Whether you have interest in this design or not, that presentation was impressive.
I love the way he explains design and function so well, very interesting to watch, great video, thanks 👍🏻
James, England.
Paladin press, blast from the past from my childhood ❤
I have several YoJimbo 2's and a full size but the Canis has remained a bucket list knife for me(along with the Shaman). I really dig this design. I hope im able to pick one up one day.
Okay, I'm getting the Canis at some point, i love hearing the story behind it all! His first gen yojimbo blew my mind lol. Janich is such a legend.
Interesting. I have an Endura AUS 8 Seki City with the molded integrated pocket clip that I have carried every day for about 25 years, and it is still as tight as the day I got it. Fun fact: I worked on the molds for the Endura and Delica handles back in 96/97 in Longmont Co.
I carry YoJumbo with me all the time. And, I think, it’s perfectly fine and enough for self-defense. Cheers
I own a few wharncliff blades. Very very effective slicers. They make great neck knives. Never really thought about one with a reinforced point for thrusting. Looks beefy. I like it.
I'd love to see a premium version of this, better steel etc..... absolutely love this design, my favourite spyderco by far, very underrated, should get more press/hype imo.
@@kroodle8facts.
100 % agree canis is o e of the best most slept o. Spydies. Should be a 20cv sprint run.
Purchased one several months back love it & it’s my EDC now
I appreciate the effort involved in the designing. I have the canis & it’s a great knife. I even cut myself with it when cleaning the blade. It cut deep & quite effortlessly. I’m extra careful whenever handling it now because that was quite painful
The Canis initially sparked my interest before I eventually bought my Yojimbo 2.
If Spyderco would come out with a full flat grind version of the Canis I would definitely buy it.
Absolutely, Hollow grind is for razors.
That is a beautiful knife.
Love videos such as these! More please!
Very impressive and smartly thought out! This one goes on the post-Christmas shopping list. 🗡️
F*CK Christmas!! Treat yourself today 😜!!!
My favorite Spyderco
Great work as always, Mike!
My Spyderco Endura with the Emerson wave feature does all that and more!
That looks pretty gnarly!
Brilliant! Thanks for the insight!
Sweet design . Looks like a good one .
I want one. Very very cool looking knife
Everything is new again..still have my Crucible fixed knife....carried and trained with that in 90s....first knife carried for defense
I remember reading "Jim Grover" articles in Soldier of Fortune magazine in the 80s. I miss that magazine. The Canis never appealed to me before.
But lnow that I know a bit about it's designed purpose I'm kinda considering one.
The same thing happened with the Yojimbo 2. When I looked at it I didn't undestand it's design and purpose.
But it grew on me after watching some MBC related videos and Michael's history of the Warncliff video. Somuch so I recently took delivery of a DLT Trading Purple and CruWear Yojimbo 2.
I think I see a Canis in my collection, right after the Salt PM2 which is definately next.
Jut received Canis today and love it.
This is also just a great edc.. I took mine to work tonight and it's just as effective against uppity cardboard and pallet straps.
Well done video.
I like it. I'll be shopping for one.
Huge gap between Blackhawk and Spyderco. There was a number of prototypes made by EMERSON in collaboration with Kelly that never came to fruition. I also saw a custom knifemaker who made a custom iteration of the CANIS. I have the Spyderco CANIS. I do like it but would prefer the handles were made in medium Peel-ply G-10
I have handled the Emerson Canis, it is a beautiful rendition of the design. I truly wish they were made available. Jeremy Krammes was the custom maker Kelly commissioned to firwt bring the Canis design to life.
GOOD Stuff !!!
When I saw the thumbnail of this video, the first thing I thought of was the Yojimbo 2. Neat.
I'm still not a fan of the Spyderco pocket clips, so I replace those right away. Fortunately there are aftermarket options to replace Sypderco clips. I do wish Spyderco would get rid of the allen key screws for their pocket clips, as the allen key screws are very easily stripped (been there, done that too many times).
Torx, the thing most knives use. If you're stripping the screw you're doing it wrong
It is very interesting but also extremely worrying.
When knives are designed to cause death or serious injury, it shows what a sad, sad world we have created.
The world has always been this way. Knives as weapons are very old technology.
Love my SpyderCO para 3 I just wish they would round out the edges of the G10 a little more it starts to hurt the hand a little when your really giving her the beans cutting something. Like the Shaman.
I love the Yojimbo. I have 3 Exclusive versions Brown G-10/S90V and 2 from DLT with 20CV. 20CV takes a VERY sharp edge. I have an all blacked out version with S30V. I've been using S30V since Chris Reeve pioneered the steel with Crucible in the 1990s. It's a great steel. Durable, takes and holds an edge. If anyone is using the Yojimbo 2 as a daily driver and frequent use, it's unfair to judge S30V based on that very fine tip/edge. Now that I've seen Janich explain it, I'm more interested in the Canis. I am a fan of all 3 of these guys: Hanich, McCann, and Bob Kasper (RIP). I prefer the handle on the Yojimbo without the bottom guard on the handle. I don't like finger grooves cuz they're more limiting when moving the knife around. I used to carry a Kasper Bulldog and a Crawford folder/Polkowski Fixed Blade Perfigo. No worries, they're all in the hands of friends of mine now. 👍
What’s up with the salt para 3? It’s been on preorder for over a month at this point.
Did he have a nd in that clip where he drew and fired on the two assailants?
Alright, fine. I'll get another Spyderco.
Very interesting video 😇👍🏻
Can we get a better version of the Ronin 2 fixed blade? I really do love carrying a fixed blade and the only complaint I have ever had about the Ronin 2 was the thin handles. Would be nice to get a sprint run with thicker handle and perhaps CruWear blade steel. I also have the Yojimbo, Yojumbo, and Canis in my collection which I switch between for my edc pocket knife.
Get a piece of steel cut out in the shape you want and put some scales on it to make it.
I don’t understand why they haven’t done anything with a wave Opener. Definitely a lot faster that opening conventionally
9:15 I noticed with the draw that Kelly drew, opened, and held the blade in a reverse position. Does he wield and utilize the blade from that position? Like a pikal, or bowie???
Any way to produce a fixed blade version of this that can be held reverse grip with a thumb hole?
will there be a fixed blade version?
Is there any chance of getting a trainer made for the Canis, similar to the Yojimbo?
Pretty awesome guy's
Well i know what my next blade is going to be.
I want one
cpm is great ... i noticed the difference with s35vn.. VOX F3.5 2 CPM premium tier and Burnley Kwaiken regular mid tier
Left hand version please 🙏
Just wish someone would make aftermarket titanium scales for the canis
Would love a less shiny version, like black out DLC or even stonewashed.
Coooooooll
With tip-up carry, are people actually reaching their hand into their pockets to grasp the knife? If so, those people must have some very loose pockets.
🔥👍💯
I'm KGB/CIA SEAL TEAM 69 never heard of it because it's that secret, not a Green Beret more like a Raspberry Beret you know the kind you find at second hand store
Meal team 6 reporting for duty sir.
Make mine a spyderco…
Looks like a vulture's head. Kinda makes sense. Vulture's need to get in deep sometimes.
More slow rollers? I mainly buy flipper tab knives 😅 because every second counts yo
Nobody cares.
Bring back the nirvana and don’t leave the lab until you do!
Great slicing knives , no endurance on the tip of the blade
Perfect knife for nutnfancy crew.
nooooope
Nachdem ich Jeremia Kapitel 10 gelesen habe, feiere ich Weihnachten nicht mehr.
Es stammt aus heidnischen Ursprüngen.
Ill keep my 10 $ boot knife
he is a leading expert in x, y , z and... "all aspects of security" ?! ... No, nobody on earth is an expert in "all aspects of security"
I bet you’re a 12-year-old that plays call of duty as well…
Idk. I have my degree in EP. I have 30 years working as a bodyguard and profiler. In court I'm an expert. And I carry a Cannis daily.
@@ChrisJones-yu9rz I'm a security specialist with +10 years of experience... and I do not know "all aspects of security" , I learn something everyday... I will eventually learn to play COD also
Just because you aren't an expert in anything, doesn't mean someone else isn't.
Baal is right. “All aspects of security” is increasingly broad. Maybe an expert in many areas of personal security. Or VIP security, or self defense. But probably not also site security, and digital security, and electrical security, and physical access security.
You just sold another one.
Are we going to ignore the negligent discharge @00:49 that almost hit the guy on the left?
all that praise yet it comes outta taiwan......
Why are there so many mean comments to each other on here? Please don't give me the old "is this your 1st day on the Internet" bs. Whether in person or online it's always better to be kind and build each other up. Can't we all just get along😂😂😂😂
Cold Steel Recon 1 spear point
Not in the same league.
out of stock 😔😔😔
Spyderco why do you do this? Yet another knife from you guys with S30V. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with s30v its great steel, dont get me wrong, but I would just like to see something else from Spyderco. Like what about their SPY-27 steel, or even better magnacut. If this were magnacut you wouldn't be able to keep this in stock.
Mfs ain't that tough
240$ for the Canis what a joke that's so overpriced.
Go buy your cheap junk knives then.
@@ericsierra-franco7802 kinda like your mom
The worse type of expert is the one that believes to be an expert in multiple fields 😂
I see you don't know who Michael Janich is.
this is cringeworthy asf even for SC and even for knife bro world. Id give 100k to see any of you try that nonsense in a real scenario. someone watched a few too many action movies. clown show.
Those extra holes for the pocket clip everywhere on the scale totally ruins these knives for me. Because of that all Spyderco knives look like factory seconds to me.
