      Great video. I too make cornhole boards. Cost was one thing I had to look at because I was breaking even on them. Lots of people were buying them which inspired me to raise my prices. I think I was at $150 a set. I bumped it up to $200 and the orders got less. But at least I was making some money. I finally went to $245 a set. $250 seems to be that magic number that turns people off. I think your good on the price. I did however figure out a way to make my boards stand out from others by making them nesting. If you're interested, I can show you what I've done. I've always wondered what other woodworkers were using and charging.

    I build mine with 2x3 edges and legs (2×3×8 are only $2 each). Makes them way stronger and cheaper to build. I've stood on mine and I weigh around 250# and they hold up just fine. The bags dont seem to bounce quite as much either. I can build a set for $50-60 and put a full top custom cover vinyl skin for an additional $45-55. Since they are custom tops of anything the customer wants you could probably ask for $250-300 with bags included. I've seen some sell for even more.

    Using the Kreg jig can make the amount of labor seem minuscule if you have space to store flat stock. You can cut and drill everything when bored and nothing to do. When you get an order, you start assembling and finishing. I like your method using the kreg. I've always done the screwing from the top and cover with wood filler. Your method I can set aside a small amount of space with everything flat and have everything for 10 boards ready to go when an order comes through.

    • @ZacJones
      @ZacJones  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that is exactly right! Usually when I have time I will cut and use the kreg jig to do some holes then pre assemble prior to an order even coming in. Thanks for watching!

    One way to save a little time is to setup a router jig template that quickly places the large hole in the correct spot and use a template bit, it creates an amazingly clean edge no sanding required.

  • @BruceAUlrich
    @BruceAUlrich 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Interesting to get a peek behind the curtain. One of the biggest things is that you have demand of people buying them, so you can experiment with price differences as you go. I hear some people talking about some of my pricing being wrong or whatever, but you have to have demand or you can't charge anything. ;)

    • @ZacJones
      @ZacJones  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You're right about that! The demand in each area will be a bit different so you should charge accordingly. I've noticed you're either charging too much (and don't get any work) or you're charging too little and making nothing. All about that fine line that takes a little to get an understanding of. I don't think anyone ever really perfects gauging what your work is worth.

    I’ve been making cornhole sets for a few years. Very basic. I sell them to an art shop that does projects with customers and my cornhole boards are a good seller. If you’re wanting to start selling these please take my advice and invest in the kreg pocket hole machine. It’s 429$ but it cut my pocket hole portion down from 18 minutes per set to 3 minutes per set. 1 10 set order paid for the tool and my arms have thanked me ever since. You don’t have to have it but when minutes are dollars it by far saves the most time of any other stage of cornhole board assembly. The next would the hole, I bought the 6” hole saw and a strong corded drill. That 200$ investment also makes the hole stage 3 times faster and gives a super clean hole.

    Great looking boards! Love how the decals give it that custom finish! Thanks for taking the time to go into the costs for us.
    I just finished my first set of cornhole boards and made the mistake of telling the guy, before I even started, that I'd do them for $150 (luckily he's a friend). I went a little overboard, making hinged doors underneath for bag storage, 'friction blocks' that lock the 2 boards together when folded like a briefcase, rope handles, even a 27' long piece of thin rope which connects to the boards with a counter-sunk, quick release keychain, for easy placement of the boards for play. Final cost of all of my materials (right down to each screw) was just under $129. Sure didn't leave much for all my labor, including pre-drilling all my screw holes (100 in all!) and plugging them with wooden plugs I made with a plug-cutting bit! Oh well, live and learn! My next set will be less elaborate, and cost a bit more too!

The corn home boards at the sporting goods stores say “regulation size” and have some kinda regulation or association or something stamp on them. You may want to look into that, as if you make them regulation size and stamp them, it’s something you can add to your marketing for them.

    I make cajon drums. I use Baltic birch because it’s the best wood for sound quality on drums which translates into costly. Factor in hardware and knowhow then your looking at minimum $125 for the bigger drum. Now walk into any music store and you’ll find they sale for less all the time and being a small independent drum maker I can’t compete with the big name drum makers. I love making drums and I love drumming so it’s a difficult choice I’m faced with. Cornhole boards seem the logical switch for me so I’ll give it a try. All my tools are Harbor Freight and I don’t use a table saw at all. My cuts are occasionally straying but that’s why God made sandpaper 😳. Everything I know about woodwork came from many hours of TH-cam videos and books. I’ve found that wasting a $37 piece of wood is a great deterrent to being lazy and sloppy so scrap wood has become a no no to me. Also, you teach good habits so thank you for that.

      Melrose Design Company I’ll second what he said. I buy most my pine based stuff for small projects at big box stores, but for larger stuff or hardwood, I go to a local lumber yard. In example, Lowe’s by my house has red oak for double the price of the lumber yard. The lumber yards hard maple is almost the same price as Lowe’s select pine. That’s a HUGE difference.

    • @ZacJones
      @ZacJones  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I always increase my prices if materials increase. I communicate to the customer during the initial solicitation that lumber prices have driven up my prices. If the customer is a fan of your work 9/10 they will pay for it. The woodworker should NEVER absorb the cost of raising materials prices to get a job. That hurts your business and if the customer is unwilling to pay an extra $25-$40 to cover material costs you probably shouldn't be working with them. Thanks for watching!

    Greetings from Southwestern VA! I find that the $225 price point is a little tough to hit here even in the college town of Virginia Tech. you said four hours to make two sets of boards? Does that include painting time and so forth? You've gotten very efficient at them!

      AC Nailed It yes it does! I only do a quick stripe around them which takes no time at all (doesn’t include dry time) love the Blacksburg are! Especially in the fall!
