  • Celestion's G12-65, M greenback and H greenbacks have provided some of the most iconic sounds in modern music. In the early 2000s Celestion decided to make what we consider to be a reissue series of these speakers called the Heritage series. It is a small selection of iconic speakers from the 1960s-1980s, all made in the UK and as faithful a reproduction as possible considering modern restraints.
These speakers are the H heritage greenback in both 55Hz and 75Hz bass resonance, copies of the post 1967 30 watt H, the 20 watt M greenback, a copy of the pre 1967 greenback and the G12-65 a copy of what was the new higher powered Celestion speaker brought out in around 1980.
Here we talk through a little about the speakers and then move on to demos of how they sound.
If you have any experience of these speakers, the originals or anything related we love hearing from you.

I have a G12-65 from 1980 with a smooth cone and I like it very much. It is now in my Vox Concert 501 (Marshall JCM 800 Clone) as replacement for the original Fane speaker and I love it. It breaks up a little earlier as the ribbed cone speakers

That was an AWESOME speaker demo. Dude is a hell of a guitar player; sounded like some lost outtakes from 'For those about to rock.' Just killer, tasty playing as well as being informative and clear. Anyway I went in expecting to like the m heritage 20watt but I was surprised to prefer the g12-65! One of the best demos I've seen on YT and I have watched a million lol. Terrific job, fellas!

Even though the G1265 is a rather dark speaker, it has a wicked clarity when you play leads on a neck humbucker or single coil. Especially when you crank those big 100 watt amps. That might be one of the reasons why guys like John Mayer or Robben Ford use it. Let that sink in: The $7000 PRS J Mod amp / cab uses these speakers! But it`s also the perfect choice for those iconic Angus Young / Back in Black era tones. Rumour has it he also used G12-65`s back then.
I always have a hard time to decide, so I got three different 2x12 cabs loaded with a pair of G12H55`s, a pair of the Heritage G12M`s and a pair of the G12-65`s ;-) My all-time favourite is the 20 watt G12m. I cannot recommend these speakers enough. And no, I don`t like the regular Greenback much. But the Heritage line is / was killer. One thing I will say though: The G12H55´s are very bright and not for everyone!

The G12-65 seems like an awesome speaker for live/in the room experience, but maybe not my first pick if I had to choose one for mic'd recording, unless we're talking about strat or tele sounds. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. I actually think the classic made in China Greenback might be the most balanced of them all. I just wished they had higher power rating...
    Cheers, guys.
Edit: Have you guys ever tried one of those G12T that Marshall used to put on their combos during the 90s? The ones with a small label on the back. I hear they're actually very close to the G12-65s in construction but much more affordable.

    Man I think I’m really liking the 55hz g12h.
The 75hz h here sounds very similar , almost identical to the creamback75 on your creamback shootout video playing that solo riff with the chord progression underneath .
    Similar scooped feel.
The 55hz here has a similar tonality just less scooped, a bit more clarity and forwardness.
Since it isn’t as scooped sounding in feel it would take eq better and be easier to find the sweet spot.
I wonder if the extra presence makes it more harsh though . Usually I find scooped speakers get peaky because of heightened top end and it can be tricky to eq them and retain clarity

hahaha, cabs aren't as easy to store as pedals though, probably why we all have way too many fx pedals about. The Fatbaby is a cool cab for these speakers, and especially with a JMP 50 watter. You'll know this already but the chassis is only about 470mm wide so you can get the amp cases down really small, it would fit on there just lovely.

This summer I ordered a G12-M Heritage from a shop that had them at 50% discount. It turned out to be a "NOS" unit from January 2009, with the old-style connectors and everything. Unfortunately I didn't try it after a couple of weeks later, but I immediately decided to get the rest of the stock they had, sadly by then they only had 1 left (now in my power).
It's the sound of rock 'n' roll, simple as that.
The G12-M Classic isn't bad at all either, but you need to cut the highs a bit to make it sound somewhat like the Heritage.

@@ZillaCabs to me the classic series greenback sounds a bit shifted up in the mids and is brighter too but has that telephone sound as the mids went up a bit into upper mids territory so people hear it easier but to the trained ear the heritage is more centered mids and smoother on top as well. I prefer the heritage G12m but also like the g12-65 and think maybe those 2 could be nice together as I here maybe a lower mid from the 65 with tighter bottom. Has the dumble type mids or maybe Dumble type amps just sound right through g12-65 speakers for some reason. Good neck pickup tones with the 65's as someone else mentioned.

Last time 12 65 sounded muffled and this time it sounds as I remember it. It is a good speaker. My favorite is still H 55 Hz though. Funny thing is that from the real vintage once H 75 Hz sounded better to me than the H 55 Hz and in the new once it is other way around. Good video as always.

    • @mikescotch8894

I guess it depends on the amplifier in use… I prefer the 75 Hz way over the 55 Hz ...
The 55’s are way too stiff, cold, sterile, ice pick, bright ‘to my ears’.
Of course, if you have a real warm, dark sounding amplifier, the 55’s could be perfect

    • @NINEWALKING
      @NINEWALKING 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@alanst.4417 I am pretty sure that old Pulsonic cones are the culprit. Namely motor was the same only different cone assembly was used. Stiffness of the surround and spider as well as cone weight makes its resonance peak at the certain frequency. This determinates lowest usable frequency of the speaker. Heavier cones are more rigid and can go lower. I bet difference between old cones 55 Hz and 75 Hz is different in the nature then difference between new versions. I guess simply now days Celestion is able to make a cone that is better on lower frequency. Though all new cones can’t touch old pre Rola Pulsonic cones. TLDR People Malibu Pulsonic cones where better in making the lead cones back then.

I am guessing the reduced power is in the voice coil, the heritage greenback is a darker speaker for sure and I know it has a different doping on the edge. I'll be honest, when comparing vintage speaers it can be hard because they've all had such different lives they can sound really quite different, but in general the pulsonic cone greenbacks tend to be a bit smoother sounding than amodern off the shelf greenback.
