As a senior music major in 1975 I directed this piece with the Oklahoma State University band as a graduation requirement. This rendition really brought back some wonderful memories.
We played this and I LOVED IT! It's soooo beautiful! Being a trumpet I especially love the trumpet parts, even more so at 6:16 (duet!). The only part I didn't like is that our band director wrote it "PSAlM FOR BAND" (lower case "L").
Playing this in my highest hand at my high school as a freshman trumpet (2nd freshman trumpet ever to be in highest band, though I’m not good I just tried out lol). It’s a good song, hope we win ISSMA
It's a beautiful song played beautifully, but the third trombone part is a bit of a snoozefest. It has its moments, but it's still a bit of a snoozefest.
Maybe by the time you've reached your 20th birthday, you'll have developed some taste and discernment. By the looks of your English compositional skills, that day appears to be some ways off.
This brings back memories of my high school tuba playing days. Love this song!

Wonderful tone quality..probably the best recording I have ever heard of this piece
Big up everyone that is still getting this piece for HS concert season, especially Woodwinds, like how high does it have to go?
Thanks for this post, I've learned and continue to learn so much from this great composer. My copy of his harmony book is pretty well used by now. :)
My school band is playing this for our UIL competition and this recording of the song has really helped me learn my part (Trombone 2)
Listen to that Bass Clarinet. God's gift to bandkind was that instrument.
Yes, I agree 💯

This sounds very similar to Pageant.

If you "know" so much you wouldn't have called Gordon Jacob an American composer.
