- Nowadays most of people calls it the "GRID" series... but the real name is the TOCA Series. So! Let's discover the racing games of Codemasters released before Grid.
I had few compatibility issues with my PC, so, I managed to run just these 3 games. Btw, enjoy! :D

toca race driver 3. oh that good times. Why did they stop creating toca series? This game is so awesome and very well made
Actually, Codemasters is continuing the series, but with a different name: Grid. ;-)
toca 3 was huge. It had full british gt, dtm and v8 supercars (now you get a full price game for the european blanc pain only) and 35 licenced tracks (more than project cars 1). Then you had karts, nascar, williams f1 and much more. Without any DLC. Then licensing costs became too high and grid had less contents, but still showed ton of love.
I don't understand what happened to codies afterwards, the nice work done with f1 and dirt rally makes that grid 2019 failure even less explicable.
viperconcept oh my god. thank you for uploading this video viper. the intro of toca race driver instantly reminded me about this game. i really didnt remember the name of this game at all anymore : i must have been so young when i played it (born in 98)
now there is just one more racing game of the past of which i don't know the name anymore. it was a bit like forza motorsport and you could walk around in a car dealership in the first person view and testdrive cars that you didn't own yet on a forest circuit

I remember playing TOCA World Touring Cars when I was a kid.
Laguna Seca and Vancouver were my go to tracks.
I love Vancouver on that game. My go-to was Bathurst
great game, my favorite track was Monza
I like Gold Coast, it's so fun to race in there.

the beauty of old game, when you see something that still locked, just use cheat or unlock through carrer mode. no DLC no micro transaction
TOCA 2 and TOCA Race Driver 2 - games of my childhood. I really missed especially BTCC cars and Ford Fiesta from the first one.
I got toca race driver 2 for my 9th-10th birthday i think, and i loved it, i already had a wheel - logitech wingman formula force gp. I'm planning to get retro gaming pc someday to try this gem again and remember truly good memories of my childhood. Though i really never finished it, i think i was around 40% completion or so. Loved crashing, i still remember how every time i tried to do massive cuts to win, because i always went into turns way too fast. That menu music ahh:D thank you viper for this video!

I never realised the amount of realism of the game.
Gran Turismo Toca Test Drive and NFS are my favorite racing series as a child...
That track info is so sick. I think it’s just the start though. I really wish there was a game that gave you that info but also allowed you to do a virtual tour of the track like in a drone or something so you could zoom out and really get a solid virtual tour of the track and it’s surroundings.
My favourite one was Toca race driver 2 on the original Xbox. Those where good times. I remember completing 100 percent of Carrer Mode and Arcade Mode. I also loved racing V8 Supercars around Bathurst.
So... Now I'm looking forward to viper's GRID review ;)
Probably already mentioned, but here in Australia the toca race driver series was called V8 supercars. And one of the differences i recall from number 2 was the first race had you race in the V8 supercar series around the Adelaide street circuit.
Got toca race driver 1&2 which were called DTM race driver over here...great childhood memories, had the best crashes lol

The amount of work you have to put in a game these days has increased a lot since the PS1 era. I can understand the publishers.
pretty much all racing games from Codemaster had that. Id rather people buy the cheat as it only works in singleplayer so who cares

Played Toca 2 ALOT when I was a kid. Thanks for this! Never realized there were setup modes. But it’s the reason I know many English tracks and the name of the bends!
On PS1 this was my first racing title that I bought. I still remember the cover, that green Renault and hearing Tiff just blew my mind and as a young 8year old to play a game that had glowing brake discs was otherworldly.
over here they called this game "v8 supercars australia" so my face when the intro was nascar made me think wtf
Yeh exactly. My youth was filled with v8 supercars on the original xbox. I could never find youtube vids on it for nostalgia until i discovered it was called toca
Here in Germany, we got "DTM Race Driver", but also same nascar intro. I was also thinking wtf, too

they named the biggest race competitions of each country to increase sales, and i wonder why they never licensed nascar for us
My word. I remember downloading a lot of demos back on my high school computer and playing them in my spare time. I forgot which Toca it was I played, but it helped me get into sim racing. I also played Race Driver and Race Driver 3. Never got the chance to play 2, though technically speaking, Race Driver 2006 on the PSP is a port of it, and I did play that one.
Heaven only knows what's going through their minds right now. I do, let me play the damn game already!
wow!! that brings back memories. it was my first real racing game I bought. I learnt to manual shift with the game... I just loved the game. Many hours where 'lost' back then :)
R.E. TOCA 2.... Wow, I remember this music just "being pretty good music of the time", but now that era of late 90's drum n bass was truly something else.

The smooth sax reminds me of early Gran Turismo games.
I still play toca race driver 3 to this day. It still looks good. I still feel this was the peak of the toca race driver series and codemasters as well. After this everything became very easy and arcadey except for the first dirt game. I'm really sad you didn't show the toca race driver 3 in your video. It had a load of cars, tracks and the AI was absolutely insane. The damage system was great, you could seriously damage your car very easily and the performance showed. It was an awesome game and still is.

I remember TOCA 2 really well. Me and a mate used to record the replay on VHS and then mail the video to each other.
Maybe it's just me, but I've the feeling that the physics of cars and the crash Animation has been better on retro games than today

ToCA Race Driver 3 was my favourite game in my childhood. 10/10
This video brings up so many nice childhood memories from me. I remember playing Toca Racedriver 2 and 3 on my ps2 with my dad. We had lots of fun playing the DTM cars. Also a funny side note: in Germany the games were named DTM Racedriver instead of Toca Racedriver :D
I remember playing TOCA Touring cars 2 on ps1 i think it was, racing around bathurst in the R31 skyline was alot of fun!

SEGA GT 2002. Original xbox. That game has fueled my passion for cars ever since I was old enough to have form memories. I'm even currently studying automotive engineering. That game is very fun.

As a kid I played the first TOCA Race Driver and found it immensely hard as I had trouble mastering the handling system. The fact that I was using a keyboard didn't help either. I should revisit it sometime, along with Race Driver 2 which I only played on the PSP.
I wonder when Viper will review the game Viper Racing.

FUN FACTS
· The ToCA 2 intro is entirely made of REAL scenes from real races recreated using the game's graphics and physics engine. The ToCA 1 intro used real footage from the races for the intro.
· The narrator of ToCA 2 is former F1 driver Top Gear + Fifth Gear's Tiff Needell.
· The bumps in the original PSX ToCA games still give me nightmares. The tracks were recreated using very rough polygons and some dips, crests and kerbs were rage-inducing to say the least.
· World Touring Cars' heightmap of Road America is so incredibly fucked up there is a jump on the turn you see at 20:07!
· Race Driver 3 also has some bad heightmaps, this time you can do a jump while lapping the Bahrain F1 circuit.
· ToCA 2's Loch Rannoch appears rather prominently in Race Driver 2, it has the same road layout but then gets a bunch of new dirt roads.
· ToCA 2 is probably the first console game to have variable weather conditions that actually worked. You could go from slicks-friendly weather to having to pit for wet tyres.
· World Touring Cars' career mode marked how several things about Race Driver's career mode worked (tuning options, tiers, minimum points, very customizable single races, etc).
· The Race Driver games are mostly to blame for the current worldwide appeal of the V8 Supercars and DTM series.
· Unlike ToCA 2 and World Touring Cars, none of the Race Driver games had variable weather conditions.
· The rallycars on Race Driver 2 & 3 are not WRC cars due to licensing issues, they're Rally America-spec cars.

I grown up played in Toca WTC, Colin 2, GT1/2, NFS's damn that was times... I still have steel book of race driver 3 when it came I don't know 2005? It was huge game I love it.

I loved the TOCA2 as a kid, I just remember the graphics were much better back then :D But the drivers names on the windows and the gestures made it so much real to me, it was like racing real people. The Race Driver games never lived up to the TOCA 2, unfortunately...
Thanks for this now I'm in tears 😭 the best one before/around 2000's was World Touring Cars in my opinion, so many hours played on that game on PS1 when I wisited my cousine because I had no PS at that time... :-)

For me all PS1 TOCA games and TOCA RACE DRIVER 3 are the best TOCA games.
When I want to chill down a little bit, I get on my bed and listen to Toca 3 menu.
I played the ever living shit out of Toca Touring Cars back in the day! And I never missed a race on Speedvision, used to come on early mornings when I'd get ready for HS 👌👌

I still think TOCA Race Driver 3 was the best in the series. It's the one i played the most and had the most fun with. I need to dust off my copy and see how it aged.

i actually had no idea GRID and TOCA were the same series. I used to play TOCA R.D.3 a lot back when I was younger. The first GRID is still one of my favorite racing games ever. Now that I know this, I can see the comparisons in design, car handling, the arcade-y feel, but god damn they improved so much with GRID......and then they fucked up with GRID 2, and Autosport (which isn't as bad as the public thinks, but it's still not as good as GRID 1). I just bought GRID 2019 as it's on sale for 20 bucks on Steam, but I don't have high hopes. Codemasters needs a refresher of GRID and what made people enjoy it. For me it was actually being able to manage my team, customize my livery, hire/fire team drivers, 24hr of LeMans to end each season, and the rivalry with the Ravenwest team, and the choice of how I want to progress. If they just added onto that with the sequels it would've been great. But GRID 2 was just an Every-Car-Can-Drift-For-Some-Reason "Simulator", and it was crap. Autosport lacks the team building and customization that GRID 1 had, but improved on the variety of disciplines and cars....BUT...it feels like TOCA R.D.3 with prettier graphics. I'm hoping GRID 2019 is at least ok.
And than they made GRID 2019 , biggest disappointment for old TOCA/ GRID fans ... :(

Aah that explains it! In the Netherlands it was also called DTM but the PS1 games were called TOCA.
Thanks to Toca 2 and World Touring cars i decided to work on the Supertouring mod for GTR2 which has now close to 2000 real life Super tourer liveries.

Malheureusement comme bcp j'avais une préférence pour gran turismo de ce fait je n'ai jamais touché aux race driver grid. Chose que je regrette actuellement car gt sport ce n'est pas un vrai gran turismo

I've played and finished Toca RD2 some weeks ago and my impression was that it was kinda a raw version of TRD3. Graphically there have been minor improvements, I grant you. Although TRD3 had better physics than its predecessor. Not gonna say that it was a sim-racing game, though it was really enjoyable. I dare say it was the perfect balance between arcade and simulation

I wonder if you ever played Sports Car GT. It was released in 1999, and was quite realistic for its time (from what I can see, more realistic than TOCA), and also had things like pit stops, rain, and night races. I am talking about the PC version; I believe the PS1 version was basically a completely different game.

i played TOCA race driver 2 if i remember correctly when i was a child between 3 and 7-8 maybe and i can remember the game had a pegi 12 rating, so my parents wouldn't let me play it a lot. I kinda loved it and hated it because i was used to gt4 and i liked gt4 physics better but i loved the variety of motorsports

TOCA2 is the first racing game i bought when i was a kid and i played it a lot along with rally championchip 2000. Very good game back in the days.
Later i also loved race driver 2 but i didn't like GRID to a point that a never bought another Toca game since.
