This is a great interview. A South African that fought in both wars made for an awesome story. Thanks for speaking sir. It also,is a stark reminder that the enemy were Communists backed by Russia/China disguised as Black nationalists. Alot of people would rather sit back and condemn these brave men that fought instead of learning the truth of the matter by READING....a lost art it seems.

Let's keep the momentum going and move quickly into Part 5. Its really great that Greg can be a voice recording such fascinating and essential history for others in his shoes in the SADF Special Forces who feel they cannot share at this time for various reasons. God bless you Greg, your book is written, just transcribe the audio and flesh out the content.

The use of morse is a little more complicated than described.
Morse is more tolerant of noise & atmospherics and requires considerably less transmitter power to get the message through. Less power means longer lasting batteries.
RhSAS had TR48/B22 batteries that were specially built. They used Zinc Carbon batteries, were not rechargeable, had more capacity and were disposable.

@tightcamper Thanks for that 'Pi%$$!()g on my battery' bit. Said in jest but what you said is true and I did not want to get into the nitty-gritty of the batteries that we made up). I learnt this in Rhodesia, as did many of our signallers.

Another good video, remarkable account regarding the aircraft. Seasickness is dire... only went with the Navy twice, once around Poole Harbour, no problem; the other time across Biscay, two and a half days of total and utter misery... Keep them coming Tony. 👍

Not so. I have a friend here in Tasmania I met a year ago. All the locals speak of him as a South African. The moment I met him I said that he was Rhodesian. It turns out we grew up in the same suburb of Salisbury although 16 years apart.

@AnnE-mn8ny That accent cost a lot of time and elocution lessons. I spent 2 years, working on it as I was doing work on radio and video and needed to lose the heavy accent I had then (even though I did not realise it then ...)

This is such a riveting story told in a matter of fact was by Greg Ashton. His motorized unit taking out 3 helicopters is especially interesting. Greg was on the OP Uric raid from Rhodesia on Mapai in 1979 wherein our forces lost a Puma 164 SAAF and a Bell Helicopter RhAF with the loss of 18 lives. One of the criticisms made was that the Rhodesians should have used the Squadron of T54 tanks and their Eland 90mm gun armoured cars in their arsenal against Mapai to take on a Frelimo Motorised Brigade. Greg's account of his motorized Unimog Sabres taking out an Anotov and 2 Mig Helicopters is fascinating. The use of a Strella missile also brings back bitter memories when these were used to down Rhodesian civilian Viscounts. Thanks Tony, John and Greg.

Thank you, Greg, for your experience and sharing it. It is not for entertainment but to show the caliber of men and their ability in what they did and done it well. We have always been a nation not to be messed with, and it did not matter the size of the enemy. Greg, I salute you for what you have achieved and others like you.
Tony, thank you very much in giving Greg a platform to express his experience and informing the man in the street on what South Africa did to the nations that attacked us.
Thank you, John and Tony, for keeping this TH-cam channel going. 🫡

Many, if not most of them, were national servicemen, I would assume. So, their security clearance and capability of containing sensitive information pertaining to the operation and location was minimum and thus the senior officers would want to minimise further exposure to contain it.
That would be my educated guess.
