Loved this play set when I was a kid...Still wish I had it now. That was the best Christmas of my childhood....That year I got the Boulder Hill play set and 5 vehicles...It was definitely the Christmas of M.A.S.K.!!!!!
I’ve always loved M.A.S.K. The scale was never an issue for me as the line was so unique, I just played with them on their own without mixing with other toys. Great video Tony!
I completely agree with you. I do t know why some people complain about the scale and size of the Mask figures. Yes they were a bit smaller than the beloved 3 & 3/4 scale but the figures did the job which was to pilot the Mask vehicles. This toy line wasn’t so much about the figures themselves, it was all about the vehicles and the fact that almost all Mask vehicles came with a figure is almost unheard of when you compare it to all the other toy lines of the time. I definitely give Kenner credit on that. So even though the Mask figures weren’t compatible with other toy lines, it didn’t stop me from really enjoying what this line had to offer.
Why did we have to move away from the greatest decade for toys and end up with what we have now? The joy of imaginative play is slipping away too fast. This site brings back the memories of so many happy days of being a kid. Thank you for that😀
I agree Tony, that would have been fun. As a child of the 70s, we did have some great toys though. I had the Major Matt Mason Moonbase, that you not only put together, but could reconfigure quite easily.
I like all the real world product placement stickers on the garage. Champion spark plugs, STP fuel additives, Cragar wheels, and probably some I missed.
Awww I miss that play set, that was so cool! I did always wish there was more to do inside so I had to use my imagination more which was a good thing but it would’ve been cool to have at least even if sold separately the mask distribution table maybe they could’ve just come out with that and had it light up or just come out with that in general with some articulating arms above etc. that would’ve been cool
The Condor was the begining, for me. In the most memorable toy purchasing day of all time, this toy was purchased at the grand opening of a NEW Toys R Us, in Montreal Canada. Also, at this grand opening, we were lucky enough to meet David Hasslehoff, who showed up, with KIT!! I'm not talking about the toys. I'm talking about the HOFF and KIT, in real life!!! All the kids were told to stand against the Toyshelf walls. With one side facing the other. We did this for arond 20 minutes ,(but it felt like hours). THEN out of the speakers, came the theme from Night Rider. As the lights dimmed and a small plume of smoke started to rise from the ground, some kids started to get scared, thinking the building was ablaze! Being the son of a Fire Chief, and having common sense, I calmed the others around me. Then, from around the far corner, dressed in Black Leather, came David Hasslehoff. It felt like things were moving in slow motion, as he made his way through the aisles, giving high fives and autographs. When he got to the entrence of the store, the doors slowly opened and we all strained to get a look. Finally, from left to right, came KIT, driven by a small stunt man. He quickly disappeared into the smoke, as the Hoff walked around the car, opened the door and got in! He put on his shades, waved to the crowd and peeled out, toward the back of the long building. I vaguely remember a guy dressed as Geoffrey the Giraffe, walking around, handing out Pre autographed photos, stickers and other memorabilia.... So the Hoff & Toys r Us was why I can remember so well, the day I got my first mask toy, (I think by the end of collecting them, my brother and I had every mask vehicle and Playset) and got to meet one of Europe's Biggest singing Stars in the process). Lol Cheers from Canada
Me and my older brother had this playset as kids, it was so fun to play with. :) Also, when it comes to cartoons based on toylines we can also agree the 80's had the best theme songs for their shows. The MASK theme is epic to this day!
Nice touch near the end with the boulder interacting with Indiana Jones! And wow, didnt realize the rubber hose could plug into the vehicles to look like they're refuelling.
I absolutely adored this toy line as a child. Growing up I loved Gobots, the Transformers, and Superhero action figures like Marvels Secret Wars and DC’s Superpowers. So when Mask came out they pretty much combined all the elements that I loved into one really cool toy line. I still own my childhood Mask vehicles. The one thing that I commend Kenner for doing that most toy lines never did was to include a figure with the vehicle you were purchasing. It was so annoying and downright disappointing that almost all toy lines that included vehicles didn’t come with a figure to pilot set vehicle. Well not Mask, for the most part Kenner made sure of that. For whatever reason I never tried to collect the entire line as an adult but after watching so many great videos like this one, I’m inspired and compelled to start searching and finally finish my Mask collection. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful toy and I definitely agree with you that the 80s were King when it came to adventure play sets! Cheers!
Great video. Boulder Hill is definitely among the top 10 1980's toy playsets; I would have loved to have it back in the day (even now 😄) but it was a pretty pricey toy where I grew up (around $20-$30 USD more expensive than the $42 listed on that catalog).
I remember playing with all day, Christmas day 86. Loved it, btw any idea why the little cut out on the floor under the gas pumps is there. Looks abit odd if they just moulded it that way.
Nice to see you getting into M.A.S.K Tony, the M.A.S.K toy line were one of the best lines from the 80’s. The engineering involved is in itself awesome. I had most of the first series when I was a kid, including Boulder Hill but I remember feeling a bit let down by this play set. I also wondered how they got the boulder back to the top of the hill, Bruce with his lifter mask I guess. Rhino was my favorite for playability and Raven was the best for engineering design.
In Christmas of '85 both my brother and I because we didn't like to share our toys we each got the Boulder Hill and Rhino truck, yeah I don't know how our parents managed that kind of cash but we got them. The only issue I had with the playset was that I had no room to store this so I'd always place it atop the kitchen refrigerator.
My UK Xmas I came down to the living room and their was an utter mountain of wrapped MASK toys for me, with a not wrapped (due to it's size lol) Boulder Hill sitting in the middle of them all. I will NEVER forget that image in my head.
Thinking back I had many of these play sets and they got used so much. I had Boulder hill but it did get damaged, sadly I can’t remember how but I loved mask and this set was awesome.
I loved MASK as a kid, and to this day I think The Switchblade and Miles Mayhem is one of the coolest looking villain/vehicle combo in pop culture. One thing that always bugged me about MASK figures is the lack of paint apps for the figures eyes. I know most kids probably kept the masks on 90% of the time, but they kinda had a gingerbread man quality with no visible eyes to me.
It's a great looking set. Never got into MASK since it didn't scale with my '80's GI Joe figures, although if Hasbro upscaled this and gave it Joe stickers, it could act as part of The Pit
That thing of Rhino not fitting in the door never bothered me, it would have make the shop ridiculously tall, I pretended there was a hidden backdoor on the hill side for Rhino... The only downside for this set was it required to partially disassemble for storage and the process made some parts prone to breaking. My brother and I spent hours playing with it. Only the boulder survive to this day.
A nice touch about the Boulder Hill HQ was that it was featured regularly but was only attacked only once by VENOM in the cartoons (as far as I know) in contrast to G. I. Joe Headquarters (which was attacked numerous times) in the cartoons. Hope you can do a video on Hasbro’s G. I. Joe Headquarters from 1983-1984 (which was explained away in Marvel’s G. I. Joe #s 19 and 24 as a Pre Fab Fortress).
I wonder how many of these play sets and the hard to find play sets wound up in garage sales, thrift stores, and sadly, ultimately, the local landfills.
Hey 👋 why not Kenner Toy 🧸 Company should re-tooled Mask Boulder Hill playset into Congo the movie volcanic Lost City of Zinj playset rest of the Action Figures and vehicles 🚗 are sold separately from Kenner part of Congo movie wave!
Heh, I managed to find a complete Boulder Hill on Ebay which was delivered to me earlier today on the 31st of August; just 1 day before my birthday. I only had a few of the smaller vehicles as a child back in the day like Condor and Piranha but owning the other toys including Bunker Hill was a lifelong dream which is now coming true (albeit at a higher pricepoint). Now I wasn't really interested in any of the Season 2 stuff as those episodes made very little sense to me. So I didn't bother getting any of those toys except for a Gloria Baker figure. A shame she's not in her original cartoon colors. 😉 On my Boulder Hill playset I did notice though that my little trapdoor doesn't want to stay closed. From watching the little commercial it seems that the grey tab that is supposed to hold it in place stays outward when in its resting position. I hope I can fix that with a blowdryer to gently warm up the plastic and then keep it in the correct position while it cools. The original stickers were also a bit messy and some already fell off due to the sticky side having dried up over many years. Fortunately both Etsy and Ebay sell replica sheets so I ordered a set from both vendors. In the end I decided to use the sheets from Etsy. They were vinyl instead of paper so that's great and the colors also matched the originals better. The ones I found on Ebay (from Zacparis) were a bit too dark but of great quality otherwise. Only issue with the vinyl ones was that they are pretty thin so any little raised spot in the plastic shows through. All in all I was surprised by the sheer size of the playset but I am very happy to own it now after all these years. Still have to get me some of those rubber hoses. I already saw them being offered on sites like Etsy but they are rather expensive. Perhaps I can find out which diameter the hoses were and then see if there's some cheaper alternative in a hobby store or something. 😃
Slightly random, Ralph Baer (aka the father of video games) had a shelf in his office\house of all the toys he had either designed or had input on. MASK laser command (Ratfang and the crate thing) was on the shelf.
biggest has to be the Rambo Vietnam vietcong bamboo MIA prison camp with the gigantic plastic floor base. I had one as a child I won in the Sheffield star spot the difference competition. 1st prize was the vietcong base , 6 wheel jeep and a helicopter without any figures.
This line was slightly after my time but I thought the tools were very cool. Would have been a massive hit if the scale matched GI Joe, Star Wars and Fisher Price
Didn't they retool the molds to this years later as an actual Indiana Jones playset that tied into the 2008 Crystal Skull movie? Pretty sure it was also used for a Mustafar playset in the Revenge of the Sith line.
I had most of the vehicles but never this. Could never find it. (I used my Captain Power power base instead) Now the vintage toy store at the local mall has one and now I don't want it because I don't have the vehicles anymore and I am not going to spend a fortune looking.
@@AnalogToys yea but over the years the roof bows or I should say bends due to the weight on top of it. This is a common problem I've seen on many Boulder Hill playsets and understandably so. However this particular one is in like new condition. I'm just wondering how it's in such great shape.

Oh man I had this as a kid!! I didn't remember until I saw the video. Loved MASK.

Just found the box for this in the attic, but the set is long gone. Great memories
"This would have been a hell of a lot of fun to play with, when you were a child." - Can confirm, it was!! 😄
I fondly remember my mum calling this "Turd Hill" when I had it.
2:05 I love that they're playing with the playset at Vasquez Rocks :)
This also functioned as the Avengers southwest HQ for my Secret Wars figures. It was very reusable.
Why did we have to move away from the greatest decade for toys and end up with what we have now? The joy of imaginative play is slipping away too fast. This site brings back the memories of so many happy days of being a kid. Thank you for that😀
Ah childhood I hope they do them again was big fun back in the days
What a great presenter you are. Thoroughly enjoyed this video.
My mother bought me Boulder Hill for Christmas '85 & my Grandma Campy bought me Switchblade. Christmas '85 was pretty awesome.
I had this as a kid and loved it.
I agree Tony, that would have been fun. As a child of the 70s, we did have some great toys though. I had the Major Matt Mason Moonbase, that you not only put together, but could reconfigure quite easily.

I just recently went back to get the rest of the main line of M.A.S.K getting all 16 main vehicles, now I have to get myself a Boulder Hill
Awesome insight to this amazing playset. I remember as a kid, my buddy that lived across the street had it. Loved playing with it.

Thank you for a great presentation 🤠
Not my era but a cleverly designed toy. My brother had Mask toys back in mid-eighties. Great review Tony👍
Using the boulder feature with the Indy figure is just brilliant!🙂👍🏻
I wonder which MASK member had to play Sisyphus and replace that boulder every time they went back to service station mode.
Tony brings in the most well read fans.
The boulder was made out of a super lightweight custom alloy that could be lifted by Thunderhawk. 😀
Me and my older brother had this playset as kids, it was so fun to play with. :) Also, when it comes to cartoons based on toylines we can also agree the 80's had the best theme songs for their shows. The MASK theme is epic to this day!

80s playsets were the best :-D guess I'm gonna have to look for one of these
Fantastic review. I've recently started re-collecting MASK and Boulder Hill is definitely a bucket list piece for me.

Thanks for bringing MASK into the forefront
Fun video Tony. Loved the Indy cameo. Iconicon rocked.
Nicely done Tony! I was happy to see you aquire this set and you must have been chomping at the bit to review it! Thank you!
Me and my friends never had this one. It looks pretty cool.
I used to love these toys when I was a lad
Great video. Boulder Hill is definitely among the top 10 1980's toy playsets; I would have loved to have it back in the day (even now 😄) but it was a pretty pricey toy where I grew up (around $20-$30 USD more expensive than the $42 listed on that catalog).
I was too poor to buy Mask toys.... still loved them and the cartoon!
love your videos Tony, the way you point out accuracies and inaccuracies of our favorite iconic 80s toys. thumbs up mate!
I remember playing with all day, Christmas day 86. Loved it, btw any idea why the little cut out on the floor under the gas pumps is there. Looks abit odd if they just moulded it that way.
Great review Tony. Awesome playset.
Tony, I can tell you have fun playing with your toys. That is great. I had that playset and loved it.
I love it
My brother and I must've got that two pack. We had those two figures but never had the playset.
This iconicon is awesome! Great video!
Nice to see you getting into M.A.S.K Tony, the M.A.S.K toy line were one of the best lines from the 80’s. The engineering involved is in itself awesome. That’s so sick! Wish they made modern playsets.

If it is possible to re-Issue these toy line again?
Thinking back I had many of these play sets and they got used so much. I had Boulder hill but it did get damaged, sadly I can’t remember how but I loved mask and this set was awesome.
I had Boulder Hill. But as time went on. BH became a GiJoe/Cobra base. MASK just faded away.
Also. It was a fuel station for my GiJoe vehicles
Awesome review, thanks Tony , love mask toys!
Great video Tony, keep up the great work
Great video. Loved MASK. I hope it doesn't get revived, it was done well the first time and won't be the same. And we'd have to battle scalpers.
I loved this toy.
I loved MASK as a kid, and to this day I think The Switchblade and Miles Mayhem is one of the coolest looking villain/vehicle combo in pop culture. @Analogtoys Kenner had a policy that no toy was to exceed the $50 (US)price point.
Anyone who has a playset from the '80s are truly lucky
They should've at least added the conference room. Kids would've loved it.
I wonder how many of these play sets and the hard to find play sets wound up in garage sales, thrift stores, and sadly, ultimately, the local landfills.
I was surprised no other figure line was in this small scale.
Tyco's Battletech line had equally small figures also amusingly equipped with helmets (for the Somerset strikers to use "enhanced imaging with") too!
Wouldn't have heard if they'd included a couple of vehicles and helicopter and couple of figures in the set.
I always could not afford any of the big ticket playsets as I spent all my allowance on figures and smaller vehicles.
Very cool

Great playset
How awesome would it be if they released this line today retro style. Is the IP popular enough?

My own unboxing :

You could put petrol into your GI Joe Armidillo or AWE Striker here.
I wish kenner would re-release mask toys just like motu origins or the real ghostbusters. Heck, even tmnt did it.
I had most of the vehicles but never this. Could never find it. (I used my Captain Power power base instead) Now the vintage toy store at the local mall has one and now I don't want it because I don't have the vehicles anymore and I am not going to spend a fortune looking.
I miss the era of playsets.
Kids nowadays are duped into buying toys they cant play with like funcopops
I dont understand why the didn't make VENOM a dungeon playset
I have a original collection of mask.
Difficile and expansive found this in italy wen i was a child i remember.
My unboxing:
😀👍👍
Loved mask still got rhino need Condor got brad who's walking
So many of these ended up at 80s bootfairs 😞
How is the roof not bowed on this one?
Because @GenXToysGeek [Jody] is extremely generous and sent me beautiful example of one.

Am I the only one who used the mask vehicles with gi joe figures??
