While I was watching this high on the couch, my roommate came out from his room to smoke some tree, and he said "Hey Spencer, have you heard of the game, mind goblin?"... My poor brain was not expecting the words that it would process within the next few seconds. Was this something I had heard of? Why would he be asking me this? Is mind goblin some cool new game I haven't heard of? Is it co-op? We could be brothers again! We could play co-op like when we used to play halo!
And so, my excitement to play video games with my brother blinded me to the obvious verbal trap that my brother had so deviously lay upon my ear drums. I responded.
"No but it kinda sounds familiar." Almost before I had finished speaking, he had felt victory. The entire power dynamic of the room shifted through the darkness. The twinkle in his eye pierced through my very soul, and then he spoke.

I couldn't believe it. My own brother had ligma joked me while watching a simple flips video. I was stunned. And then I burst out with laughter. And then I wrote this comment.

"No translating level titles" so what I'm hearing is learn japanese, spanish, and other common languages found in mario maker level titles so you can get an edge on the competition
My favorite part of the Ironbros rules are the things like:
'You cant pause to look at the screen to help you'
'You can't translate a name to help you understand the level'
Like, these are just rules that exist to force you to die because you cant gather information. I'm allowed to READ titles I DON'T need to translate, but the second its another language suddenly it's a sin? You'd think a challenge functionally centered around careful play wouldnt say 'But if you play carefully the run I'd forfeit'

The "No translating titles" rule is absurd, it doesn't stop anyone from having an advantage, it just disadvantages anyone who doesn't know japanese. That's a real weird elitist weeb flex.

The rules really should just be 50 levels, no skips, one life. Those extra rules just don't really make sense, especially the pause rule. Also, no translating is a bizarre rule. What if I literally know the language? What, am I just not allowed to read? Or do I have an advantage for being bilingual? Like, I feel like whoever wrote those rules was a former Twin Galaxies moderator

You're allowed to read titles in any language.
If you want to take it seriously then you'd have to memorise words like 'auto' in other languages.
Being bilingual only gives you an advantage in one extra language.
I seem to have finished every sentence with some form of the word 'language'.

The "no pause" rule and "no translate" rule both seem really stupid. Firstly I feel like you're just at a disadvantage if you don't know a certain language compared to someone else, there's no reason everyone can't have that same advantage. And two, I feel like for a challenge like this you should be open to any smart play or advantage you can take to better your chances, such as pausing. I would 100% ignore those and just play the raw challenge, 50 levels Normal, 1 life.
Yeah the translation thing is horrible considering there's a million Japanese titled levels, and people exist who know both Japanese and English, believe it or not... I feel indifferent about the pausing rule, but it seems most people love pause buffering so it probably shouldn't be a thing.
Yeah the "no translating" rule immediately got a "?????" out of me. Makes sense for people who only know English, but even with a basic understanding of Japanese I can't help knowing that 21:58 says "1 minute speedrun." Like, do I get disqualified just for being able to read that, or do I just get that knowledge for free while someone else isn't allowed to know?
I know rules like that are always to try and foster a higher difficulty and a more varied playstyle, but I just can't imagine pausing for levels changing THAT much. I mean, it basically turns any "you have 100 seconds to solve this weird maze" kind of level into complete luck, but...

I like GPB, but my tinfoil hat hypothesis is that he got sore people were beating the challenge before him and wanted to make it harder so less people could do it. And now he's doubling down on certain dumb rules.

The no translation rule really seems odd to me because I don't see how there's that much of an inherent advantage knowing the level of the title if it's in another language vs knowing the title if it's in your language... Like being able to read the title in english isn't going to give you that much of an advantage, really. Whether the title is in a language you understand or a different language changes basically nothing, so it seems like a pointless rule

As much as I love Poo I can’t say I agree with the no pause rule decision he made tbh. So many of his deaths are cause he’s looking at chat while trying to play, if he did it like you where you paused to read chat that’d be. Such a better idea

"no pausing to gain an advantage" is such an ambiguous rule. any pause could be argued to give an advantage in some way no matter what the intent was, so any valid run with a pause of any kind could be unjustly invalidated just because the arbiter feels like it.
it's impressive how a single bs rule makes me so much less willing to even watch content creators I like attempt the challenge.

Yeah the pause thing in particular seems silly to me. That to me just seems to make it more a contest of luck and less one of skill and knowledge
the no translating rule seems slapdash as shit. if someone could say "well i guess no bilingual people are allowed because they translate the title just by reading it" and a reasonable person would say "well that's just the letter of the rule and not the spirit of the rule" but what the hell is the spirit of the rule, exactly? if the no pausing rule is to prevent "cheating" by stopping you from being able to safely read a level in order to get more information, then i suppose the spirit of the no translating rule is to prevent you from obtaining extra information about a level through the level name, right? but then people who are fluent in multiple language just straight up get an advantage over people who do not, according to what these rules say. it's just extremely fucking poorly thought out.
I think it just means that you can't use some kind of translator, not that you can't read the level titles. Are you translating this sentence right now by looking at it and understanding what it means?

Question about the "no translating titles" rule: are you automatically disqualified if you just happen to know a language other than English and are able to understand some non-English titles? Or does someone who knows another language just have an "unfair" advantage? I guess, if you do know another language, you don't *technically* have to translate it to understand it, but I don't know. It feels like a huge mess of grey areas
Like what if the title is in German or French and happens to be close enough to the English translation that its meaning is more or less obvious? Is that grounds for disqualification? Or do you just have to look away as soon as you see that it's not English?
Are we assuming English as a default? I feel like that puts people who speak some of the less represented languages on SMM2 at an inherent disadvantage
Overall, this rule just feels weird. It either rewards or punishes people for knowing more than one language, or for knowing/not knowing one of a few specific languages. Allowing translations would flatten that advantage/disadvantage, small as it might be
GrandPooBear also disqualifies you if you are having too much fun as well.
If I ever do this challenge, I'm doing it solely for myself, not giving a FUCK about the leaderboard (not like it would matter with how small I am), because the no-pause rule is super dumb and basically made just to invalidate someone else's earlier run that got to 51 normal levels with no deaths before the challenge was made (or, at least, that's the only purpose it really serves), and the no-translate rule is flat-out unfair imo.

I also hate the pause rule. I think it's fair to say no external help which includes twitch chat and Google translate, but pause buffering or looking at clear check times or just rereading the level title are fair ways to try to beat a level

I sort of understand the "If you die on the first level, is it odd or even" question, if it wasn't somebody just doing a goof. If he dies on level one, he has completed 0 levels, which is an even amount. The question is basically "Are we looking for the level you die on or the amount that you've completed?"
