In the 1950’s our Gran lived with us, and she had the little pillows of lavender everywhere. She also used 4711 Eau de Cologne, so her presence was imprinted by these aromas. Never seemed over the top - just elegant and delicate. We live on a farm in outback Australia, and grew our own vegetables, and used the Fowler Vacola System to preserve fruit and vegetables. Eggs were preserved with Isinglass, but it was not 100%. So we cracked every egg separately, inspected it minutely, and sniffed it before adding to the omelette. About 1 in 10 was rejected. In addition we butchered our own mutton and chicken, and as a young lad of perhaps 7 was introduced to that world. We had no electricity for a year or so, so wood fires, candles, Hurricane and Tilley Lamps were how we lived. My 7th birthday present was a beautiful Plumb axe, and henceforth I was in charge of the kindling box and wood box. Every morning at 6 am I boiled the kettle on a methylated spirits stove, and took Mum and Dad a cup of tea. I often think of these days. My life was typical of farm boys the time, although today it might be called child abuse or exploitation. I was taught to shoot at age 8 with an ex Boer War 1890 Martini Henri 310 rifle. One family of 4 children rode a draft horse to school, and the little school had a horse paddock for this specific purpose. We did not realise we were deprived, and we loved working on the farm, especially at sheep shearing time. I enjoy all your videos, especially the woodwork ones.
What an idyllic life you enjoyed as a youngster. NOT "deprived" but incredibly rich, alive, and wonderful. I enjoyed your lovely description of your days gone by. Boys were taught manly skills and learned immense self-esteem by doing and achieving with their own minds, hearts and hands. All that has been sadly lost today. Blessings to you.

INCREDIBLE root system on those beautiful garlic plants. I am thrilled for you. I plant local raised red German hard neck bulbs. I've been watching them daily. Mine don't look ready yet. With our super cold winters, I did not think you could grow soft garlic. We are in the same cold zones. We get down to - 25 winters here. We did indeed have a mild winter. What do you think that humidity level is in your cellar? Oh that lavender is gorgeous! I have not had good luck with it. Did Mrs. grow all hers from seed? Lavender is very fussy in this humid area. Needs extremely well drained soil. Usually dies over winter. Is it in raised beds? Please consider a video on the how you get that lavender to survive our (normally) wet winters! Plants are very pricey these days. VERY cool drone shots! SO extremely dry here still. 💚
I was told that hard neck doesn't store for long. This was just some clearance bulbs from tractor supply and the flavor is wonderful. Never had it grow anywhere near this large in all the years that we have planted it. The humidity is about 50% now or even less with the AC on. The root cellar door is near the furnace that is a really cold spot when the AC is running and we just leave the door open when outside temps get this high. We tried lavender seeds but could not get any to germinate. We purchased 6 small plants for $3.00 each at our public market about 5 years ago. I don't remember the names but the grower said it was breed for our growing climate. Each small plant has spread to about 3 feet in diameter and is very hardy. The area by the house is usually very wet and the batch behind the fence is dry but they have both grown equally. You should look for a small local grower that can recommend the proper plants for your area as the fellow we bought it from had many different varieties suited for our location. We had .94 inches of rain total in June and zero so far in July. All the rain heads east of us and we have watered every night for the last 2 months. Can't wait for that to change as we are on the edge of a drought again. Thanks for watching.

I grow extra spring onions and pickle them for next year Yum :-) Just love onions. Dug up some potatoes, just 2 cos i was nosy lol. they will last us 2 month or so, so pleased with them. If the cloves surround a centre stalk then you've got hardneck garlic. Music is the common variety sold by stores. They'll really size up with some space and lots of nutrients in the fall. Drought has really affected our apple trees and Concord grapes, but pears and other grapes are doing great.

Fantastic garden and harvest. Wondering how do you keep vermin out of your wood pile from eating the garden. Every wood pile I have even off the ground has rat signs..... They love to eat my garden and fruit. .... We trap both live, snap and zapper. They are all too smart to get trapped with the exception of the young ones...
I have never seen a rat around here. We have skunks and barn cats roaming around that seem to take care of mice . Squirrels and chipmunks can be a problem but the hawks get many of them. There are some snakes and bees in the wood but that is about all. I have a couple voles in the compost pile that I am trying to figure out how to catch. Thanks for watching.

A air compresser might help with the dirt. You could blow the garlic off with a nozzle.

An air compressor or brush can damage the thin outer skin shortening storage life. That's why I do it by hand. Thanks for watching.
