In our 'high-tech' world it's refreshing to see something like this and someone with the God given sense to communicate with this old piece of iron. Keep up the good work pardner.
"You can't see from this side but on the far side there are 42 hash marks on the outside cylinder casing. Those hashes mark how many operators that engine has murdered..."
Praise to people who have the money, time, knowledge, and drive to keep these old girls running. I don't even have the money to travel very far to see them
I need to challenge the critics here. I for one enjoy and admire these machines as much as the owners enjoy operating them....YES I love them! so critics: educate us whats so dangerous, I really dont know!
That is a hit & miss engine. If you watch you will notice that every 10sec. or so a puff of smoke will come from the side of the cylinder. At that point the RPM's increase then it runs without firing untill it slows down, then you will see the puff again. The puff is when it fires or "Hits" and the "Miss" is the revolutions in between while the energy is used up.
Basically, hit and miss engines don't fire once every four cycles like a normal four cycle engine. Instead they govern their engine speed by only firing when the engine is turning at a set speed. Firing of course causes the engine speed to increase, causing a pause in firing until it returns to the desired speed.
@ViralMessiah Yeah its old and rusty alright! Like to see this in person. Like to see what all that is on the flywheel shaft. If it doesnt get balanced out , it will wear out the cylinder, piston, everything lol!
Seems a little rough running. Probably having a fuel mixture problem, or the governor is too tight and letting it overspeed before going back to a miss cycle.
well that piece of scrap still has the power to outwork many modern engines and electric motors, hell you could power your house with this thing and pay a good bit less than what you may be paying out the ass for now.plus just the fact that it even runs should be proof its worth its weight in gold.
when you think about it a modern day engine still can kill and hurt you just as bad as these big boys.still i think they did make covers for these engines but most run it like they do for show.
don't think so.. since these engines basically do the same as modern cars.. When no power is needed, the engine shuts off.. only the flywheel stores energy to restart her if the RPM's drop below a certain level..
That is fantastic, I could sit here all day just watching these old engines, nothing else sounds like them. Thank you for posting.

That's one seriously pissed off machine with a butt load of compression. Love it

Say what ?

Hell I can barely afford to leave my back yard lol
no mosquitos for mileswith all that smoke !!!...nice engine !!!
Great to see it still running!
Smokes a bit but that's how I like them!
I love how these old engines can keep running with a little maintenance. Love to see the reaction of a mechanic if you pulled up with this!
Gewaltig. Beeindruckend! Ich wünschte, ich wäre life dabei gewesen!!!!
Wow what a smoke.
Time for an entire overhaul.
Damn!,That S.O.B. blows smoke signals,I love it.
I need to challenge the critics here. I for one enjoy and admire these machines as much as the owners enjoy operating them....YES I love them! so critics: educate us whats so dangerous, I really dont know!
waiting for a huge hunk of engine to fly up in the air.lol.
man i love this old stuff... thanks 4 the vid
That thing is wild, love it.
Big worthy hunk of history.
it looks like its having somewhat trouble running smoothly but neverless i love these old machines

The way this thing bangs when it fires, this would also work as a bird scare machine on the farm.
I would sentence all EPA crooks to a lifetime of keeping that engine running ,, don't ever let it stop
Looks amazing. Its just a pity that the best videos on youtube always recorded with the worst cameras.
Its like a hybrid of a stationary engine and an hail cannon.
They knocked down an old factory near me and there were a ton of red ones like this lying on the loading Bay for a while that they hauled out

this engine must hold the world record for the slowes rpms while still running
I don't know which is older - the engine or the camera recording it!
Lovely hit&miss engine though, anyone know the make and model?
@ViralMessiah Yeah its old and rusty alright! Like to see this in person. Like to see what all that is on the flywheel shaft. If it doesnt get balanced out , it will wear out the cylinder, piston, everything lol!
Pretty clean running engine someone said in 1918
Roughest hit and miss I've seen, but I like it. Somethings off balance!!!
Very nice video! what a sound!
A bit like my mother-in-law after some kidney beans..
Thanks!
Why does it still produce smoke from the exhaust when it is missing and not firing? Cheers.
Jippieh!!!! What a great machine!
Und wo ist die angekündigte Miss?
MonsieurLu77 Heute Abend geht es nur um Stahl, werter Herr Lü.
Sie können also früh zu Bett gehen.
Juhu, der Gurtner hat ein neues Hobby :-))
Moooment!
NC? DAMN IT! I used to live there! I could've gone to one of those!
it vibrated the ground when I was filmin'
and was loud!!!!
And with that, may I once again raise a toast to Mirthful Irreverence Everywhere.
Mt dad told me they used to have one of the farm when was young,
They called them Poppin' Johnnys.
I think they mean "grist" mill, not "grits" mill.
Wow! Looks and sounds like an antediluvian monster. "Here be dragons..."

I love watching the dark round smoke out like in Tom and Jerry cartoon lol
how beatiful!
Christ, my 50 Ford, ah the memories....love the sound.. Would be better with a load like a fan to keep it in check..
What was that type of engine used to drive? My guess would be an old time belt driven work shop, but maybe not.
Infernal Contraption!
My Ford runs like a champ. My Chrysler, however...yeah, it does this.
cool, love those smoke rings. think maybe your flywheels are off balance though, why it jumps around. dunno
@uraldneprvw When it doesnt fire, the exhaust is left open, so when the oil enters the cylinder, it gets vaporized from the heat.
Looks to be a 2 cycle oil engine fires every revolution
AWESOME!!
looks like some sort of antique dragster😈
awesome!
Some people like to see engines to go flat out... Sadly these days people to see it go fast or go fast.
ok Lord Skidmark. No one said a word about swearing.
I imagine this is what the power supply to hell would look like.
I would not want to stand next to this thing while it was running.
WOW that is big. look at it shake
jeeze, I wonder how much torque that beast had, lol. Nice!
when you think about it a modern day engine still can kill and hurt you just as bad as these big boys.still i think they did make covers for these engines but most run it like they do for show.
@Curtisexplorer Yeah without a load that thing could easily break apart. I never see the big ones running like that.
God that thing looks incredibly dangerous.
@Geraldtoo it's a hundred years old lol,the weight of the rust alone could throw it out of balance
Thats correct, two cycle operation oil engine.
Something that would scare an alien off back in to space...
That thing had been around since WWI
also they dont use fuel unless they drop below a certain rpm due
@astriknon Thanks. That makes sense. I see it now.
dang smokey!
@CSAKvids yea its an oiler
Cool
Wow! Is it meant to smoke like that!
Thats one hell of a machine
I believe this is steam powered my friend fire and water is all it takes :)
I think Al gore just gone done and had a heart attack.
At the beginning I wasn't sure if it was going to start or blow up.
i used to have a car that looked liked that ... :)))))
Nice Bessemer
don't think so.. since these engines basically do the same as modern cars..
When no power is needed, the engine shuts off.. only the flywheel stores energy to restart her if the RPM's drop below a certain level..
What did they say?
Looks like a Bessemer oil engine. 2 cycle ol engine. Just type "Bessemer engine" and watch the videos. Nice engine.
holy shit that looks like its going to explode
damn straight!
'Hit and miss' describes the governor, not the engine.
No wonder the horses would run away.
Hit and miss? It looks like it was firing every time to me.
Who's engine is it?
geezus...no wonder all the ole timers only had two fingers left per hand...any part of this crazy thing could kill ya. wow
The piston must weigh half a ton!
Imagine if that engine had forced induction...
nothing like a hit n miss poop whoosh whoosh pop whoosh whoosh whoosh
i still have a car that runs like that!
lots of smoke wow that was awesome just saying
not balanced very well. but honestly how the fuck to you balance this much iron in 1918? great video thank you for posting.
Sounds like a Chicago pneumatic 100hp
add 35 to that.Lord skidmark.
I used to have a car that ran like that...
Well, kiss my grits.
sounds like hillbilly dubstep. wait in for the bass to drop
you own 24 of them. what the hell are you complaining about?
Roulette of death!!
FIRE THE MISSLES!!!!
