It's called style. A lot of the kids focus too much on airs and skateboarding maneuvers and don't develop great style like Andy had, but there's guys like Ethan Ewing who reminds me of AI and BI.
Ethan Ewing nailed his style. But Andy was the original and he throws in so many unexpected extras that he’s still the best, those cutdowns are timeless
I feel like AI is very different from both JJF and EE. Andy liked to come sharp of the bottom he was a pocket surfer, while EE and specially JJF like to hold the bottom turn for longer and carve on the open face at full speed. Jordy Smith is a bit more similar to Andy, but still not as vertical as he was.
Watching him is so mesmerizing. He is a damn flawless and natural rider. 0 fear. Full carnage ripping on some heavy reef waves if any watching the vid identified and know these waves. Insane barrel riding. Ripping huge carves and any tricks. Can watch him for hours...cannot say many others are so interesting to watch like him.

Over the 40 years that I been lucky enuf to be flipping thru channels on the Tele and see a surf contest were ever it I alway loved to watch for as long as I could hoping I'd get to see some bad riding the rails off his surf board the way I skateboard it never matter how long it was I'd stick it out because it was always worth the wait,totally in the dark about surfing it was always a joy to watch u masters flow and rip....I know just by the size difference from skate board to surf board that surfing had to be way harder..plus your wave is moving ares is standing still....
Andy is so radical and natural, you could splice this video into a 2021 video of top 10 surfers and he is still a standout. We all know Kelly is the undisputed GOAT, but Andy still won 3 world titles off Kelly at his peak.
Kelly is not the goat. He's a great competition surfer, that's about it. Andy was so ahead of his time and unfortunately I don't think we'll ever get anyone that is able to match his raw talent.

This is as great as anyone can surf. PERIOD... Impressive. A sweet spot of surfing history where power and grace were king! Tricks today have altered the ruling and do add a fun aspect but this is as good as it gets.

Its like he has the grace of parko with the aggression of, fuck, i don't know who surfs with more aggression. Its insane. Everything is so fast and explosive, like he's on the edge all the time, but perfect. I think that Andy still wins CTs. I think he really was as good as Kelly.
