It’s so cute watching the beginning of the movie and just seeing how close they r even before this song. Like when she mentions both of her sisters during The Family Madrigal Luisa gives her a thumbs up and when she is told to put a piano upstairs she all look out so I just think it’s sweet

    • @ttytoyeet9383
      @ttytoyeet9383 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

another thing is that immediately after, she protects mirabel from the hurling boulders forcing them to be pushed back to earth- with rocks and concrete as a juxtaposition from clouds and floating in the sky.
she’s showing mirabel that while everyone’s living their perfect life with their amazing powers, she was forced to be strong for everyone and handle everything that no one sees. every pressure every crack every burden every problem, all the responsibilities because she’s the oldest and she’s reliable and she’s perfect.
everything stacks up higher and heavier with every realization, and soon she’s carrying the weight of not just herself and her family, but the whole house, then the whole village and the mountains that surrounds it to protect them.
and she’s not allowed to have any cracks, any breaks, and no mistakes. so no pressure!

    • @KevinHernandez-lj7yv
      @KevinHernandez-lj7yv 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

And right after that, as the burdens keep piling up, we see how Luisa is tearing up, she's about to cry as she still holds up the burdens and prevents them from touching Mirabel; and at the same time, Mirabel's face grows more and more horrified as she realizes how much her sister is suffering and struggling as she shoulders that heavy weight.
This song (and the movie as a whole) is extremely well-made and puts lots of attention to details. It's awesome.

When my sisters and I went to watch this movie in cinema, my younger sister (she's the middle sister) and I cried. We have a 6 year difference between us, but when I moved out, she learned the responsibilities I had because they were dumped onto her. We cried, understanding just how it feels to have to be the stronger person in the house. When we were younger, my parents fought a lot and I had to be the one to comfort and look after them, at a very young age. We see ourselves in Louisa and, we felt so seen in this song

To think that she never complained, never blamed her younger sibling for having to deal with the "heavy stuff" and instead she just peacefully accepted her role as the big sister looking out for everybody, she really deserves the "Best Big Sister" award for all what she's done for the family.

I feel like it's pretty relatable even in the real world. People with talents for example are seen as people who were born with a gift that gets better and better, which will ultimately improve the image of society, whether that's through art, music, acting, engineering, science, medicine. But to those people individually they see it as something that pressures them due to the societal expectations. It's pretty interesting.

It reminded me when we were in this poor ranch at night and the bathroom was a whole outside.
I was 8 and my little brother was 5 and he needed to go to the bathroom. I remember that while I was never afraid of the dark and “ghosts” as kids usually are, I was terrified of the bugs. But my father told me to get my little brother to the bathroom in the middle of the night and it was all pitch dark. My brother obviously was really scared, so I put up a strong and brave facade just to get my brother all the way and back to the house safe.
I even remember when he asked me “Are you scared?” And I, incredibly scared of the animals that could be roaming the place, told him “No, it’s fine”.

    [Luisa:]
I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous
I'm as tough as the crust of the earth is
I move mountains, I move churches
And I glow, 'cause I know what my worth is
I don't ask how hard the work is
    Got a rough, indestructible surface
Diamonds and platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em
I take what I'm handed, I break what's demanded, but
    Under the surface
I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus
    Under the surface
Was Hercules ever like, "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"?
    Under the surface
I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service
A flaw or a crack, the straw in the stack
    That breaks the camel's back
What breaks the camel's back? It's
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip, that'll never stop, whoa-oh
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, your sister's older
Give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder
Who am I if I can't run with the ball?
    If I fall to
Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa-oh
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa-oh-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger
See if she can hang on a little longer
Who am I if I can't carry it all?
    If I falter
    Under the surface
I hide my nerves and it worsens, I worry somethin' is gonna hurt us
    Under the surface
The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is
    Under the surface
I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?
Line up the dominoes, a light wind blows
You try to stop it tumblin', but on and on it goes
But wait, if I could shake, the crushing weight
Of expectations, would that free some room up for joy
    Or relaxation, or simple pleasure?
Instead, we measure this growing pressure (pressure)
Keeps growing (pressure), keep going (pressure), 'cause all we know is
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa-oh
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt and
See if she can handle every family burden
Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks
    No mistakes, just
Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won't let go, whoa-oh
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa-oh-oh-oh
Give it to your sister and never wonder
If the same pressure would've pulled you under
Who am I if I don't have what it takes?
    No cracks, no breaks
    No mistakes!
    No pressure!

I love how she is not the stereotypical "strong dumbass" character, she actually has a personality, is mentally well rounded (for the most part lol, girl is suffering from some severe anxiety in this song) and not just a brainless fighting machine, she has a struggle and an arc throughout the movie and even has her own solo song number. You become the work horse of your parents while simultaneously being the protector and guide of your siblings. This song reminds me so much of my own mother, also named Luisa, but that's not the whole reason. She was actually born the youngest of 7 kids, half of which were almost adults when she was born, so she got the short end of the stick every time, and a lot of the problems caused by other members of the family ended up falling onto her shoulders, but instead of crumbling, she took the responsibility that no one wanted to take just to keep things stable.
She was also very slight and tiny when she was young, which she hated, so she worked out a lot and got pretty buff, which she was always very proud of throughout her years of military service (another example of her willingness to protect and help those that would never see her do it or even care).
I love you with all my heart, Ma. You're the strongest woman I'll ever know ❤

I've always thought that crying is a sign of weakness and now never cry infront of anyone. And when I do its after a long period of time. I too have a deep voice for a girl. And the way Luisa sings this makes me wonder if anyone else in the family could've sung it so beautifully. Ive always thought my voice sounded weird because it was deeper than most girls but this song reminds me that, that has nothing to do with it. Even if you can't sing high doesn't mean your can't be amazing.

As an older sibling definitely. I'm 19 as well (like Luisa) with two little brothers but all I've heard since I was little was. "Set an example" "You're the first born so be a good example" "You're setting a bad example" and so much more pressure-inducing phrases that began flooding back as soon as I saw this: "Do better for your brothers." "Don't give them a bad name." "Don't do this. Do that." and so on and so on. It is definitely painful when they come back and haunt you.

I feel like that's one of the reasons her relaxing scene in this is unicorns and pink clouds, because she never had a real childhood. I love how Luisa's character is a representative of older sisters who have families who are tough on them because they're older and they expect so much of them. It's really hard, and as an oldest sister, I'm not the type to complain, I just pick up all of my sibling's messes and clear up all of their mistakes because I'd be blamed for it. I can't show any weaknesses because they'll think I'm over exaggerating. I can't cry because they'll say it's an excuse. No matter how stressed I am, I keep going. Regardless of how negative my thoughts are if I were to disobey what they say or what to do. If anything happens to my hermanos, I have to take full responsibility from them. She's indeed very strong, and not just from a physical standpoint.

I think it's the same for other siblings too. I was the youngest but I was expected to watch out for my siblings as the only girl and keep them out of trouble. If they got in trouble we were punished together. I was expected to carry the emotional burdens of my siblings as well as both my parents (for whatever reason, they put a lot of heavy things on me from a young age, toting me around to attend 'adult' talks.) I'm seen as the competent and independent child so I grew up having to deal with things by myself, shouldering responsibilities beyond my age and even being my brother's keeper (my brother was spoiled and coddled by my mom and grandma). I always felt like I couldn't act out, or ask for help or not be competent because it was expected of me. @heatherheath3834 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

Absolutely, i adore the metaphor of the donkeys representing Luisa. You can also interpret the donkeys (who're culturally seen as 'ugly' animals), to coincide with her own opinion on her physical looks (even tho she's gorgeous and has one of my favourite character designs ever) cause girls aren't 'meant' to be bodybuilders, or have that sort of figure, they're meant to be small and fragile, and I think that disparity between her identity as a woman and her personal identity is a big contributor to her issues of self-worth. It's such a genius metaphor and she's gorgeous, but she won't see herself that way because she's not society's definition of 'pretty'. Ugh this film is so good.

    • @heatherheath3834
      @heatherheath3834 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

And that's just like a hypothesis from them being there and what's shown of her low self worth through song. I'd love to see them delve into that in any future content, being what's considered an 'imperfect' woman romantically, I'd actually love to see her meet someone who can match her at her level and help share the burden without complaining :))

It gives the world a visual of the role a lot of women really play in the family, the ones that hold everything up, who holds everything together doing 100 things at a time. The image the world usually gets is of Atlas holding the world up but oftentimes it's women who do it silently and without complaint, keeping a straight face for our loved ones and not letting them know that their needs and demands are breaking our backs. Pressure indeed.

I love how Luisa is a more realistically strong looking female. It’s obvious both to her gift and her own wishes that she really trained hard to be strong and her more square jaw and everything allows her to look stronger without just being “a man with tits and mascara” that you see a lot when people want the “buff chick” character. I also love how she seems to like to wear skirts and be pretty and is still feminine despite all that. Normally people go the tomboy route and then I just wonder “why wasn’t this character just a man?” They took time and effort to make her a strong woman, not just slapping the gender into a different character for diversity.

I’m the youngest and this song, makes me cry every time. My parents would come to me and come to me with their problems I’m the only one that could help and would help. Trying to keep the peace and protect them. Always from a young age I bend to what I’m needed to be for the family. During a convo with my mom and sister , my mom admitted she showed my sis more love and attention because she needed more, she said she knew I was fine and could handle with less

    • @mmcc4517
      @mmcc4517 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My mother said that to me, too. It wasn’t true then and it is not true now after years of therapy. You’re not a peacekeeper because you need less love , you give in hopes of someone realizing you need as much love and attention. My brother and sister are selfish, not more in need. My parents are clueless because they grew up in emotionally upside down households, too.
Learn to love yourself. So much more rewarding.

It's made me who I am I just needed help once in a while too. They talked about their issues as youngest and middle too.

Never letting them see how tired you are and how much you gave up just to make them happy and help them grow. I regret none of it but I can look back and go wow. Damn.
