- Crocheters asked to understand how the yarn is unwinding when you use it. In this video, I unwound the ball to a winder to show you what it looks like from tip to tip. Caron Colorama and Red Heart Super Saver O'Gos are a continuous strand that is dyed. The Bernat Blanket O'Go is cut and weaver's knot tied between colours as the technology to dye long self-striping yarn in chenille hasn't been perfected yet. . *** .

Thank you for this tutorial. I've always been curious about how the O'Go yarn unravels works while crocheting. This answered my questions. Thanks so much ❤️
I learned about this yarn winding tool when watching a YT video of an older retired gentleman who had taken up knitting. He would go to thrift stores and purchase really nice sweaters made of cashmere and other fine yarns. Then he would take the sweaters home and unwind the yarn using this tool using the yarn to knit a brand new sweater. Genius!! I purchased the tool the same day! It's great for hanks
That is awesome! Such a great idea as well.
Thank you so much for this demonstration. You took the “what the heck do I do with this” to simplicity. At least there is a clean cut between colors.
As always, you are the best!!!!!
Yeah, I need to crochet with those colours anyway. So it's not a waste. I was happy to demonstrate.
I love this idea! I like the OGo but wasn't sure as to how convenient it was to use. This is a perfect solution.
Thank you Mikey , the yarn colors is beautiful . In its form, it looks like a neck warmer and you can bring it anywhere you want, just put it on your neck and crochet ,lol 😘
or sit in a plane and sleep :)
Anyone else find this satisfying to watch ☺
Reminds me, I have to pull that yarn out and make a hat. Thanks for the reminder.
Thank you for demonstrating, nice and smooth, no knots and alot of yarn
it is totally deceptive on how much yarn you are actually getting. The long narrow O'Go is holding more yarn that people realize.
Interesting design. I like that you can use the colors in the way you want them in your project. Thanks for the demo.
My pleasure!
Omg this looks like my life saver. I can't count how many hours I have spent u tabgling yarn barf. God lord. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🤲🏼🤲🏼🤲🏼📿📿📿😇😇😇
I think it's great to have an option.
Thank you! I didn’t buy it because I thought it was a solid circle. You made it look super easy and fun!
This yarn looks so cool ... thank you for sharing this video. I love the colors....😄🙌
I'm a fan of the colour options they did as well.
So neat! I am one who prefers cakes to balls as I tend to move my work around a lot, and I find balls tangle when they are moved. Not a big deal for me as I am one of those who actually enjoys untangling yarn…but I do turn my balls into cakes most often. I think the best part of this is the fact that the company actually took the time, effort and money to develop a product to help people! If you have no problem with your yarn balls, great! Use those! If you would rather spend $.50-$1.00 more and not have to worry about tangles, you have that option too! When liquid coffee came out it didn’t replace ground coffee or instant coffee! They all exist in harmony! I hope there are some self striping options! Great videos Mikey!
Now that's a hell of a good analogy. I never thought of it from a coffee point of view.
@@TheCrochetCrowd I thought so:) its similar to your laundry detergent analogy, they all exist together…just another option! I am simply blown away that a company set out to try and help their consumers…that part is the most interesting part for me. I am not a fan of super saver yarn, i would rather pay more and have it feel nicer, but i may give it another shot in this format!
Thanks for video. I won't have to struggle with it anymore.
Glad to help
Super, can’t wait to try it! I wasted too much time untangling yarn just last night.
Oh no! I was sorting yarn balls! :) I had the fun job.
Just had a movie flash lol
It reminds me of a “ sand worm “ from Dune !!
😉🤩
You are totally right on. I was thinking Beetle Juice.
@@TheCrochetCrowd
Yep that works also lol !
This is a great concept. Thanks for your handy videos!
Glad it was helpful!
Well I am intrigued.
It's an interesting product. I am excited to see what people do with it and the options.
Thank you for this video, very helpful . . .
You are welcome!
I think I want to try out this yarn!!!
Let us know how you make out.
Interesting premise. Thanks for demonstrating.
My pleasure!
That's awesome...
It sure is!
😂 I just love 💕 u Mikey! You are the cutest! I love the love the Lil skit with the wake me up before u ogo cuz I ain’t planning on stitching solo 😂 I love 💕 it! U should use that always now 😂
I prefer to stitch with friends and gossip. Lord know when that is going to happen again and usually the only thing we finish is the dessert plates :)
Thanks for demo..very easy..I like⚘
Thanks so much.
The thing I like about it is to be able to pull it apart and get the certain color that you're wanting. Mix the colors and still be on the go and don't have to have the ball winder right there with you to separate them if you're not at home or on an outing. I always take extra with me. This just brings to the next level.
I agree. I prefer to have control on colours. While I have enjoyed self striping yarn and this can work the same, to be able to change the order or use a bit of one colour here or there in a project suits my creative aspirations.
I love this idea, and will definitely be giving this a try. 😊
Wonderful! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for this demonstration 🙏🙏🙏🙏
My pleasure 😊
My only issue with this format is paying a premium price for a lesser amount of the same yarn😳 I very much appreciate the time you've taken to show how it works, Mikey.. but I'm sticking with the old fashioned way!
I’m unsure where you are getting there’s less yarn. It’s right on labels and it’s the same. Exact yardage and weight. It’s the tooling equipment that changed which is causing the price increase. They fugg do not want to reduce yarn to match existing price fir the cost of changing out 100s of machines. The regular ball isn’t going away. So you can stick to your regular way and fir those who want this option can choose it.
@@TheCrochetCrowd I heard the same (less yarn, same price. So I did some digging. O'GO is 300gm, 220 yds. Bernat Blanket is also 300gm, 220 yds.
However, you can usually find Bernat blanket on sale somewhere.
It's just a new format that tends to tangle less.
Thank u 🙏 Mikey this was a very helpful video.
Glad it was helpful!
That is so cool
yeah, it's pretty neat.
I get the appeal to being tangle-free and being able to easily separate the colours, but having to crochet next to a long "snake" of yarn just seems inconvenient in many instances, and takes away some of the portability of crochet and knitting, which is one of the great benefits of those crafts. It's just one of those things where, I get it, but it's just not for me.
I posted a video of travelling with O'Go yesterday. In your bag, you point the O'Go up to the top of the bag. So the tip is the only thing feeding your project as you sit in the car, airport, dr office or wherever your find yourself. Nice thing, you don' need to switch over. They are not eliminating the balls but just addressing the issue of giving a tangle free option for those who wanted it.
This is soooo cool
I think so too.
I am loving this new product. I wonder if there's a way to wind yarn into the o'go shape?
Not yet. i did ask that though. :)
I HATE yarn barf! I can't wait to get my hands on one (or ten, just don't tell my husband 🤪) of these bad boys! Thank you so much for sharing all of this Mikey. I was also curious if the colors were all separate or one strand.
This is a game changer where yarn barf people really want a break from it. :) Enjoy your 1 or 10. I won't tell. :)
That's cool
Thanks.
Hahahaha I love the intro!!! 🤣🤣🤣
don't let the song get into your head. It's catchy.
Love that winder Mikey! Where can I get one? Very neat indeed! 👌
I bought it online. Just surf Amazon.
I really love the concept and having yarn that doesn't tangle is fabulous🤩 but...the packaging seems to be very wasteful. Yes, it can be recycled but most people would just toss all that packaging in the trash. Maybe it could be redesigned to be less wasteful 🤔. Thanks bunches for the tutorial and like I said the concept is really a great innovation.
I figure there will be a post mortem after this launch to determine the factors that people are pointing out. I suspect this will be reviewed.
@@TheCrochetCrowd thanks for the reply and I hate being "that person" lol and I still planning on making a purchase. Just remember to ♻️ everyone. Let's be good steward to our home 🌎.
Love, peace and crochet...cheers
I make decisions on packaging myself. I avoid things in the grocery store or department store if the packaging is really obsessive and plastic is the thing. There's this one product that is 24" wide x 18" as a guess. It has 24 markers in a fan format in plastic. I am thinking why is there so much plastic as the markers could be displayed in just 6" X 8". So I leave it be. I think it comes down to making choices. You have to do what is right for you.
@@TheCrochetCrowd Absolutely 💯 agree...happy stitching 🧶👍
I bought some O Go's without knowing how to use them cause of the colors. Am I gonna have to purchase a baller or will it be possible to do without one. ?????
Mikey can you go to factory and show us the process for Ogos? Would love that!
I don't think that will happen for a long time. I am not traveling at this time due to safety and not traveling beyond the Canadian Border until I feel more comfortable. I've become paranoid with this pandemic.
Omg 😱 I love that yarn winder , I’m so new to crochet that I didn’t even know it existed. Where can I get one?
You can find them online
I got mine online direct from China at AliExpress.com just search Yarn Winders. They are fairly cheap.
Mikey. U didn't mention the yardage per color or for the entire O'Go. . Do you have any additional information? Does the O'Go come in different size yarns. The one you used to demonstrate looks like it might be a 5 or 6.
No I didn't. I know what it is to answer that question without measuring it with a tape measure. The O'Gos will be just three brands off the hop. #4, #5 and #6. The Caron Colorama I showed is a Chunky #5 weight. Great eye. The colours in the O'Go I have been told are nearly the same in yardage per colour. So if you take the yardage of the ball and Divide by 5, you will get close to what it is per colour. 228 yds/5 = 46 yards per colour.
I need that wine thing lol
It’s a great tool.
Can you make a full blanket with one ogo?
No. You need 7 to 10 of them.
Where can you purchase this yarn? We have Michael store here in Fayetteville NC. And may I ask about the yarn roller I would like to purchase that as well. Thanks
The yarn is being released on Aug 20 from Yarnspirations :) The yarn winder is easily found on Amazon for cheap, unless you want the bigger style. You will see mostly a selection of red & cream yarn winders made of plastic for around $25. Well, that's what I paid & I'm in Canada. You should get yours cheaper :)
@@lavenderrainbow5041 thank you so much. I appreciate your help I'm ordering it now. Thank you❤️
Michaels will have Bernat Blanket O'go rolling out. JOANN will have Caron Colorama. Walmart will have Red Heart SUper Saver O'Go. This is just the beginning. It will be available online starting Friday for those who wish not to go to a store and have it delivered. The winder I got online from AliExpress.com.
Excellent advice.
@@TheCrochetCrowd thank you so much
Thank you for covering this. I always come to check out what is new in your neck of the woods. So, I hear that retailers wanted to peg or stack the yarn. I am just thinking about projects that take upwards of 8 or ten balls. That is a lot of waste and messing with the packaging and a tonne of paper. I enjoy using patterns both physical and on a pdf. I just think in this day and age both generations of new crafters and those who have been working yarn for many years and all in between won't care for all the waste. Also will these be offered in single colors or multi like this? That plastic line that comes out of the middle seems a choking hazard for pets and children alike. I'll stick with the old tried and true skeins. There is no need for the yarn industry to be changed.Thank you as always.
I think knowing what I am reading in questioning the packaging. I bet this is changed in the future. This is the first time going to market in this format so they will learn the lessons from this.
Can you tell me how many yards there is all together and where to get it?
Caron Colorama will be at JOANN in the USA. Bernat Blanket O'Go will be at Michaels and JOANN, Red Heart Super Saver O'Go will be at Walmart. Online orders open on Friday if going to the store is too far or for those who wish to order online. The yardage per colour is close to the same. Colorama divide the yardage by 5, O'go divide by 3. RHSS O'go divide by 15.
@@TheCrochetCrowd Thank you so much for all the great info.on this new product. So exciting.
Can it be center pulled?
Yes, the opposite side can be centre pulled and it's only about 3" deep so I tend to use it that way more often as well.
What kind of yarn roller is that?
A yarn winder. You can find them online if you wish.
Tangles or trees? I just can't justify the wasted cardboard, regardless of the retailers preference.
With any new product, a post mortem (they call it) will be analysed. Based on what I saw this week, I think the packaging needs to be relooked at again. I think it's a fair statement.
@@TheCrochetCrowd I was pre-coffee and should have also said, "Thanks Mikey & crew for giving us a peek into the guts!" ;)
What are you using to wind the yarn? Where would I get one? 😁
It's called a Yarn Winder. You can find them online like I did. Amazon or crafty websites.
@@TheCrochetCrowd thank you!
I wish you would give a tutorial on using the winder. I just bought one and HATE it. It gets tangled and I get frustrated. I just went back to hand winding. I'm peeved about the nearly $30 I'm out.
It may be a bit irksome to hear it from a different voice, but there are lots of videos on TH-cam on all sorts of things.
Odds are these will help: slow down, make sure you put it through the wire loops so the "source" for the winder is always consistent, have a second bit of tension like his hand on the yarn so it's not flailing about, make sure your source doesn't have knots or severe twists that can lead to knots
I have tutorials on the winder already in the collection. I just use a $15 version that I bought online many years ago. Secret I found is to hold the yarn leading to the winder so there's a bit of tension. You can see me doing that in this video. The balls pop off if I don't.
excellent advice. You noticed my feeding hand is providing that tension. Awesome!
Too much fuss involved! A “ solution” for a non problem to begin with.
80% of people surveyed said it was an issue. So that's how this came to be. For myself, it's a non-issue and if I do tangle, I don't fuss and just deal with it. I don't turn to social media to complain about it. However, there are several people each day that do. So they were hoping to solve problems. Luckily though Madison, they are not replacing these with the balls. So you can have your balls and others who struggle with tangles can have this option. It's the best of two worlds.
You go
You go... I go let's O'Go! :D
Good
Thanks
When and where can I buy this???
This new format will be available in large retail stores in North America. it's already starting to set up in the stores. It goes live online on Friday if buying in a store isn't safe or close to you.
I picked some up at Joann's 2 days ago
They had a nice display set up. Michael's didn't have it out. The salesperson found in the warehouse in boxes unopened. She brought them out when I asked about them. They are squishy and the colors are beautiful!
That was nice of them.
Isn't Yarn Ball Winding so cathartic?!! Glad these can be cleanly cut.
I secretly love it! Makes me feel good.
I love watching it unwind. Would like it better if the first color wasn't split.
Yeah but then there would be wasted yarn that would be trashed at the factory to get the first colour to start exactly at the break. I did think the same but I would prefer this as it's cheaper as there is less waste and there i less package handling by the operators to speed through the process.
Seems like it would be easier to pull from the other end to get the center pull then you wouldn't have to prop it up.
BINGO! That's exactly how I do it too. I have been using the other end. Smart minds think alike!
Some how I’d still get the yarn in a tangle!
How did that happen to you?
@@TheCrochetCrowd it hasn’t but I’m saying if I used it I would be the one to tangle it!
ah okay.
There’s not much I like about this yarn (the ogo red heart). It feels like it’s coated with something and it’s wound so tight in spots it has actually made marks on the yarn-kind of crinkled like. No go for me😩
I really don't buy any of the yarn they have done this to so far,but it could be cool to make some minis from.I do not like the extra wasteful package.
Yeah I hear you on the package. Retailers wanted to be able to peg this and let the yarn sit up on its own. I have relayed back to Yarnspirations about the concerns of packaging and see if there is other alternatives. Originally, this was only done in peggable format and most of the ball was exposed and peggable.
Very wasteful packaging.
The retailers wanted the option to peg or for the yarn to stand on its own. So they accomodated the retailers in their requests. I bet this will be changed in the future based on feedback.
So, more plastic we don't need and more paper(cardboard) than a simple wrapper around ball? Hmmm...no thanks!
Doesn’t appeal to me. And it doesn’t look like there is a lot of yarn on that snake. Plus you still have to wind it to make a ball. Why don’t yarn manufacturers just sell balls of yarn with a tag on the end so you can find the.end or the middle of the skein?
I wound the ball to prove it's a solid strand. You don't wind it before use. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear. People messaged me to see what the entire ball looks like if it's being used. I cannot crochet fast enough to demonstrate that so I used a winder. The tag on the inside of the yarn ball is a patented concept. That's why you don't see it that often.
This just seems like a lot of extra work. I'll stick with individual skeins personally.
People wanted me to prove that ogo is a solid piece of yarn. So I unwound a ogo to prove it. I wouldn’t have done it otherwise. It’s not needed.
These use too much trash for labeling.
Retailers wanted the option to peg these and to have them self stack. So that's why the packaging looks the way it does. I think, possibly, they can revisit the packaging in the future and see. In the original video I posted on Monday, you can see the original prototype was only peggable and just a piece of cardboard around the top of the ring. It had to be changed to suit the wishes of what the retailers wanted. I don't disagree, but that's how that's come to be.
This was also my observation. I've been living in Europe for a while and on my recent visit to the states I was reminded how excessive packaging is for a lot of items and am saddened that yarn has now entered into that category.
The packaging is not only larger but now includes a piece of plastic! Companies should be working to decrease the imprint packaging is leaving on the environment. It's fine that retailers requested a change but anything more than the old school small paper labels seems like too much.
If the manufacturing of the packaging, and/or the packaging itself is equally or more sustainable I'd be interested to know more about that.
Agreed. And idk how organization and "tangle-free" can be more important than reducing waste as much as possible for the environment. I think yarn labels should be made of 100% recycled paper without the glossy crap. Imagine how pretty that could be? Yarn already comes in so many plastic bags during shipment anyways. Which should also be used with the cellu-something made plastic. The stuff that is also biodegradable. And of course the cardboard boxes as well. I'm just sayin... is organization and tangle free more important??
You don't do shoes
I'm sorry, I don't understand your comment.
Great concept, but not for me. Guess I'm too old to change my ways.
I think you said that on another video but the good thing Nancy is that they are not replacing the balls. This is just an option for those who wanted to experience tangle-free options. You probably don't have this issue to worry about it.
If you want to talk changing your ways in technology. OMG, I am so in your boat. I cannot keep up to the all the social media and programming changes! That's been really hard.
Probably very expensive
The winding equipment had to be changed to make this a tangle-free option. So this option is between 50 cents to $1 more per ball. Best yet though, if this doesn't appeal to you, you can still buy the balls in regular format. It's really up to you on what you prefer.
I don't see the benefit.
That's okay... You don't need to switch over for the tangle-free option. They are keeping the balls and cakes that people love. This is just an option for those who fight with the tangles and are interested in the colour play option and travel without tangles. It's not for everyone.
It’s child proof
To some degree yes. especially when someone moves your project and scrunches up the yarn ball and it internally tangles.
What a gimmick but damn don't your girl love a good gimmick! 🤦🏼♀️
Welcome to the future of yarn wrapping. Cakes were a gimmick too and look it became standard. You are on the edge of a new generation of yarn presentation in real-time.
@@TheCrochetCrowd I love my cakes too! Anything that isn't a boring Skein I'm all about when shopping, that's what catches my eye besides colour. I'll definitely be checkin these guys out. Texture wise for the worsted what would it be comparable to in bernat worsted skeins?
Not something I would like.
No problem. They are not replacing balls, so this is not an option you have to get involved in. It's an option for those who want a tangle-free option.
