I still have my Dynakit ST-70 I owned and has been working since 1975. It now sits in storage for over 10 years now and You just put the bug in me to get it back up and see how well it stood the storage test. I'm also tossed between either that or selling it because its all original parts. That amp was always hard to part with.
Wow I guess you can’t sleep like me! Ha ha get the FM 3, I have two and I love the emm 801 dual magic eye tube that tells when you’re locked into the station, and if it’s a stereo signal. It’s a very simple design. The tuning capacitor is attached directly to the knob, whereas my TEAC reciever that I use when my ST 70 is down preamp it with the Stereo preamp! The depth of the radio and the base is fabulous and if you have a good antenna, you’ll pill every FM station in anyway I hope you’re well again I don’t know your name your mysterious like uncle Doug he doesn’t ever show his face, but I like his soothing voice and his animals he includes in the videosanyway keep up the good work and I wish more women were involved in audio and tubes.
Looks like fun! I'm an old Heathkit and the like builder so these types of videos I enjoy. As an aside, that white plastic film is used reduce reflections as the sheet metal is laser cut! That chassis is probably cut from a 4' x 8' sheet of stainless, along with however many other chassis they can get from it. The cut 'chassis' is bent into a finished chassis with a press break. It would be quite easy to cut more vents into the bottom cover with this method of manufacturing and you could suggest that to the company. Cheers, DD
Stephe, I love the thought and attention being paid to how this will look, black board, ordering black tube sockets and nickel plated RCA sockets. Hope it sounds as good as it will look.
Looking forward to build video. I'm thinking about getting a tube amp or maybe kit. In that I hope you explain why the changes in parts and wiring. Thanks
Lucky you! I hope you really enjoy doing this build and it will be interesting to see what you do differently. I am seriously contemplating picking up a pair of tubes4addio M125 monoblock kits when they become available again, and incorporate some of your thinking into them. I see you like the black circuit boards. Purple circuit boards are also starting to become popular as well, and I hope we start seeing them in some of these vacuum tube power amp kits/rebuilds. As for your gold RCA jacks: The gold plating isn't so much for aesthetic purposes as for reliability. Since gold is very resistant to corrosion in air compared, to say, nickel, they don't develop resistance over time like the nickel ones do. The gold is also compatible with other metals used in construction of the plug. (Ironically, most gold plating is done over a base nickel plate layer!) I wouldn't be so quick to ditch them.
If it's actually gold. I suspect, at this price point, most of these type of things are gold colored metal. At close to $3000 an ounce, I can't imagine a $2 retail jack has pure gold plating.
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics I looked at a wide variety of gold plated RCA connectors, both plugs and jacks. Although confident that the gold plating is real, not one manufacturer, not even Switchcraft identified the purity or the thickness of the gold coating. You may be on to something interesting here.
www.tubes4hifi.com/amps.htm and they do have 240V versions of the power transformer. You might have to swap in a different cord/plug? Email them for more info!
If you want the silver look rca jacks, some people say the rhodium plate is as good as or better than gold plated. Cost is about the same. Looking forward to this video as I have a VTA ST-70. Interesting to see what mods you make.
The only option I see in the style that will fit are gold and nickel. The nickel looks nice. www.tubesandmore.com/products/rca-jack-switchcraft-front-panel-mount-natural-insulator
Yay! I wanted one of these or the m120s for such a long time. All those blue glow pics of the amps with 6550s really sold the amp to me...psychoaccoustics I guess
I built the Bob Latino (VTA) M125s and the instructions were stellar!! I guess not using them is fine too.... LOL Seriously though, if you have some ability and experience soldering both point to point and circuit board, the instructions will make for a very successful build! A great amp, I had bought one before the M-125s, already assembled and loved the sound! 🙂I have vids of it (M-125)....🙂
@@dougwilson7336 Reisong A-10 $400 delivered to your door, the handful of mod parts maybe $25, more than likely you will change the tubes out $200. $650 all in. ST70 $1000 +ship (?) is $50 reasonable? + mods (?) + Tubes $300, I'd call it $1500 minimum. Of course there is more power, different kind of amp.
I've searched Lowe's and can not find any listing for this kit. Having built a Dynaco back in the 60s, I'm interested in which of the newer offerings is this? Please provide URL.

Really looking forward to this series.

I have an eico st-70 still rocking from the 60s!
That's awesome!

It's like Christmas all over again!
0:08 So do "tube transmitters"! One of the ones I used to work on had a 24 KV power supply...🤗
Love to see your mods to this amp, building mine at the same time paying very close attention to Morgan Jones' book. Cheers!
Morgan Jones book is very good.
I love my Triode , USA - st70 from the kit they offer. I love your channel Steth!
take your time building that take a lot of close up of the PCB and chassis if possible 😁
Love mine! And your videos
Happy Tuesday!😄 This should be fun to watch you build. L💞ve from Canada.
This looks tempting as a first build.
It shouldn't be a real difficult build.

100% will explain!

Looks great so far
Yes! I’ve heard pretty good things about Aluminum as a medium in sound. I dunno exactly where besides planars and caps
I love that design of tube amp 🥰
Tube guitar amp guy here, but wanting to have a tube stereo setup for practice and entertainment. This looks just like the ticket. :)
@12:32 Do they sell the same board in blue? Thanks! Looking forward to the build!
Just green and black AFAIK
@@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Thanks!
How much is the kit and is it available in the uk spec 😊ps love your Chanel 🇬🇧👍

That is a DACT style SMD type stepped attenuator i was telling you to try in another video of yours.
😊
I tested it and yep, it's an actual stepped attenuator.

I plan to read them. Might not follow everything in them :P
Yes, this is all I need GOOD Instruction!
Which is another reason I would never sell kits :) I have zero interest in creating written instructions.
oh so looking forward to this build. should be better than buying one of those reisong amps.
Sure it's "better", but 3-4X the price too.
My guess would be 2.5 times or less and you also get much more power as well.

uh... that's a Lowes moving box it was shipped in. www.tubes4hifi.com/amps.htm
Too funny.... LOL 🙂
Ok, im hooked, just a few more Q and I'll be ordering. I Watched this vid twice. Q1= why did you order without tubes?
I want to use a NOS 5AR4 and different 12AU7/EL34 tubes. I like the JJ EL34L output tubes specifically.
Hi, do not know your name but wonder if you have Dynaco😅 PAS v😮deos or fm 3
I'm looking at getting an FM3 :)
The power cord says ''a lot''...
The power cord matches the original spec. Mine is around 50 years old with no issues.
That looks like a multi-detent pot, not a stepped attenuator. There’d be a bunch of resistors around the body if it were truly stepped.
It's an actual stepped attenuator, I tested it yesterday.

Everyone knows that black pc boards are sonically superior to green pc boards 🥴😂
Absolutely!!! Add some nickel plated RCA jacks and the sound stage is doubled.
