Rainforest sounds - Night in the jungle

- What does it feel like to be immersed in a rainforest, far away from people and surrounded by nature? As daylight starts to fade, this experience is not necessarily a blissful or relaxing one, especially if this is your first time in the Congo basin.
To begin with, the calls of daytime birds will softly wane as night sets in. Turacos, cuckoos and parrots will attempt a resemblance of a dusk chorus but not very convincingly. The insect chorus is pretty strong even during daytime, but this becomes even more loud and piercing at night. Since you're in a rainforest, a thunderstorm is never too far so you may also hear distant rumbling thunder reverberating through the jungle.
Once the last rays of daylight are gone, you may hear a very unsettling call. It starts off as a distant, soft whistle, but it soon becomes evident that this is a long series of increasingly louder calls. After a few minutes these eerie sounds become more urgent and piercing, building up to a climax of desperation. I heard this call repeatedly when sleeping on a local's porch in the village of Mohoba, Gabon and had absolutely no idea what it was. It took me a few months of research and guesswork before I found out it was the call of the Western tree hyrax, a plump and funny looking mammal about the size of a hare. Listen to its call towards the end of this recording.

Hey there ! I love your soundscapes, they help me a lot in my daily life. So I had a recent accident and some surgeries. What I want to go into is that at the last operation the anesthetist propose me to play some music before beginning the surgery, and I choose one of your soundscapes. This helped me to calm down. So basically I just want to thank you for all your great job you re doing.
Thank you for taking the time to write this, hope your surgery went well. It's extremely humbling to hear how my recordings helped you and I'm happy my work helped you calm down. That's more rewarding than I could have possibly hoped for.
It's such a great experience to be immersed in these sounds... I'll never be able to travel to a rainforest, so it's such a gift to be able to experiment its atmosphere. Thank You!!
My pleasure Matteo, happy to facilitate such experiences.
👩👀☺️😉
Yes! I listen to those to calm down before sleep and night-time ones are what I prefer because it seems more natural. Anyhow, I'm a dedicated fan of your videos in general! :D
Wonderful, thank you for the kind words. They're all 100% natural, no shenanigans, loops or sound design here.
@@GeorgeVlad That's why I love them :)
Excellent as always.
What a pleasure.
Thank you very much, George.
Ah - yes ... the Western Tree Hyrax is a great opportunity to test your serenity ;-)
Glad you enjoyed it, Diderich.
So beautiful 😍 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
A very alive jungle 😃
This is one of my favorite recordings to date. Does anyone know the name of the bird coming in at 35:03?
Thank you, those are Great blue turacos (Corythaeola cristata). One of my favourite species from that part of the world.
@@GeorgeVlad i keep coming back to that part. Thank you! Now I know what to look up :)
Edit: my god it’s like a little dinosaur haha! Amazing
Super
Thank you!
Omg the tree hyrax 😂😳 I can’t believe that sound! The epitome of desperation 🤣 Gosh, I’d never heard anything like that from the animal kingdom, eerie indeed 👏 awesome adventurer, You’re brave, man! Even in the jungles of Africa you’ve bee! Are there any dangerous or poisonous animals in those jungles? Were you ever afraid?
Haha, there are plenty of dangerous and venomous creatures in the rainforest, but I think I'm in more dangerous on a walk through London than I am in the actual jungle. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Do you know which viper species this is? It reminds me of the Eyelash Viper, but if the picture was taken in Congo, it must be another species.
It's a bush viper, probably Atheris hispida. It does look a bit like a pit viper.
@@GeorgeVlad It's really beautiful. The shot you took is great, especially the hues on the eye.
Oh wait, I think it is an Atheris Squamigera. The Hispida has a more bristled head and its head is less triangular. In any case, the picture is really great, thanks for sharing.
That is quite possible, thanks for the ID tip.
Incredible work! can I ask what equipment did you use? What microphone? It's great! Best wishes!
Thank you! I mentioned it in the description: Sound Devices 633 and Sennheiser DMS microphones (MKH30 and MKH8040) in a Cinela Pianissimo blimp.
@@GeorgeVlad Thank you a lot!!! your work is awesome! Best wishes
