Somehow I think there's been a cross-wire glitch associating butter with the BU lol. The BU is the Bangtan Universe, a storyline that runs through a lot of their videos during the hyyh and Wings era. Jin is a pivotal character in the storyline for sure. If you get into it you'll notice he's always kind of apart from the others. The BU starts with I Need You, then onstage prologue (a short film with Butterfly as the soundtrack), then Run (not to be confused with Run BTS) and Young Forever. Those are the 4 main videos in order but there is literally a crap ton of content that attaches to the BU. Begin, Lie, Stigma, Reflection, Awake, MAMA, First Love, fake love, it's neverending, there are webtoons etc.
Butter is just a (Grammy-nominated) feel good pandemic cheer up summer song 👍💜

BTS is definitely KPop. They have transcended it in terms of music but they are very much part of the KPop industry and they are considered 'idols" (in fact the ultimate idols). Butter really put them on the map in the United States, even though they had been a global sensation for years before this song came out. It's a very good vibe, though, and it drew a lot of people to BTS! When they performed it at the Grammys last year, they were just incredible, and they should have won for Best Duo/Group, but they didn't...and a lot of people felt it was because of the Grammys inherent prejudice toward Asian acts. I won't speak on that, but I do love this video and am glad you're reacting to it! LOVE those stylish dance moves! As always, I hope you will react to Blood, Sweat, and Tears soon! Sorry but they were global sensations without being on the US radar, why is it that bands, singers, actors only have worth when Americans notice them. Some of the best singers, actors, dancers, bands have come out of other countries besides America but there’s this need to get American approval 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @amberpearce710
      @amberpearce710 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@susanhill2110 I totally understand and agree. Unfortunately the USA became the biggest market (and the hardest to get into unfortunately). Idk about actors but the music industry is almost double the amount of the second biggest music market which is Japan. Because USA is the biggest music market, if you are big in the USA you are more likely to be famous in the other music industries around the world, but it doesn’t really work that way the other way around (except for a few exceptions). If you are big is the East it is a lot harder to get into the western music industry. Do I personally believe that means the best is always I n the USA? No, but unfortunately it is how it is. Do I think they need western approval? No.

    • @NanciBK
      @NanciBK ปีที่แล้ว

It’s not the social circles, it’s the pay-to-play music industry.
BTS have always been industry outsiders from a small, independent label that was founded on working counter to the industry narrative. The music industry hates that everywhere, not just in Korea. It’s bad for their business model and outside their control.
BTS are self made using social media. That’s bad news for the narrative the big labels have been feeding their shareholders for years. Plus they were from the bottom of the hierarchy, so how dare they?
The racism and xenophobia are also a big issue outside Asia. Even the guy who does Grammy’s social media was complaining about the pushback he got from his bosses on Asian artists and Asian interviews and BTS in particular giving the “wrong look” to their social media.

I don't really care for their full English songs, if I'm being completely honest. I get why they did it, buy I've been a fan for too long and prefer their Korean music any day.
Since you're still getting into them, I think going back to the beginning will help you love them even more. You see how much they've grown as artists and as people.
I got into them in 2014 when I first heard their prerelease Let Me Know from their Dark & Wild album, which is still my favorite full album of theirs. I'd heard Boys In Luv, but it wasn't my taste. Let Me Know opened my eyes to their talent and here I am, 9 years later. 😊
I've been blessed to see them live twice. 2017 was amazing, but when I saw them in 2015, they were still small and pretty unknown. Very small venue, so it felt more intimate. And they played my absolute favorite songs which they haven't really done in concert since.
You also can't go wrong with their Bangtan Bombs and their dance practices. Have fun! 😊

@@nickforell1 I really do recommend going back to the beginning now that you've gotten a taste of them now. The dance practice to Danger is the first one I show newbies because it is so good. Their MVs are amazing, but the dance practices really show their talent.
Jin & RM have been getting teased for years that they aren't as good of dancers as the dance line, which is infuriating because they may not be at Hobi, Jimin or JKs level, but they can hold their own and have since the beginning.
I'd love to walk you thru more of a comprehensive look into some of their stuff. If you ever wanted to do something like that, I volunteer. 😁 I wish I'd had someone to hold my hand when I first got into kpop. It's why I always offer people who are new into it a helping hand, because I know how overwhelming it is and how it can make you feel lost and even a little alone. Especially once you start getting into the more toxic side of it all.

I am going to be the odd ARMY out here that actually love their English songs. I personally find them amazing songs to put you in a perfect mood (isn’t that what music suppose to do??). I personally find it kind of sad how people are prejudice against BTS three full English songs. I get what people say but still. While their Korean and Japanese songs are amazing and have deeper and wonderful messages I think a big part of ARMY devalue these songs. Personally I don’t think every song out their needs to be deep, honestly sometimes the songs that aren’t super deep are some of the most healing and best songs for a certain time. In my opinion, personally think these three English songs did it for so many people (even those that aren’t ARMY). Also just because a few songs aren’t written by then doesn’t make them any less bad. A great artists knows when he finds a good beat and knows when it is time to be deep or not…Also their is always at least one line in any song of theirs, even their full English songs, that has a message in it….Anyways this is my personal opinion and I love Butter. (And the rest of their English songs)..,,

I wouldn’t say their influence “ends” so much as that even the insanely talented and genius workaholics that they are cannot do absolutely everything themselves.
They have help from stylists, choreographers, writers, directors, etc.
They get suggestions, themes, scripts, that they go over, but those things often start from their own ideas and are delegated for exploration and fleshing out and then brought back to them.
But the choices are theirs. They narrative is theirs. Their label and Bang PD prized their artistic freedom and authentic voices from the start. That was his genius and his vision: finding talent and fostering them to get their authentic art out there. He is a different kind of guy, a producer who was willing to go broke over and over and struggle and suffer to stay true to the art.
The songs are theirs too of course or, on occasion, ones they choose to do that are sent to them.

Actually just to clear up a little something that you mentioned. They are actually K-pop. It's just at K-pop is not a genre in and of itself. K-pop originated in the west as a term to describe Korean popular music which comprises many different genres.
Part of the uniqueness of BTS is that they actually have music in many different genres. More so than many other K-Pop groups. Therefore they transcend what most people consider K-Pop.

@@nickforell1 If I may jump in here? 😅
I think it’s easiest to view the term ‘Kpop’ in discussion, as an term comparable to ‘Hollywood’. It’s almost as big; just with music agencies instead of studios.
We all know what a Hollywood movie is, but within that are so many genres.
So yes, BTS are inextricably linked to the kpop tag but because they are so versatile, experimental and fundamentally talented musicians (not just mouthpieces for songs) it can sometimes grate on fans for them to be lumped in with whatever pop music style is currently trending for almost every band in South Korea atm.
Because BTS has faced so much western dismissal and journalistic hubris, us Armys almost immediately strive to separate them from that label; sometimes very confusingly!
It’s a very nuanced conversation! Especially as BTS members are seemingly accepting of the ‘idol’ name, despite their history and personal musical inspirations.

Yes, Butter is the 2nd full-english track that BTS released. Riding on the high of Dynamite, and coming 6 months after their quarantine comfort album BE (Dynamite was a single for that album), Butter was definitely another song to hype up all listeners and ARMY, while also allowing BTS themselves to flex and show the music industry that there is never a "one-hit" when it comes to BTS.

When BTS started, they would do their own stuff. Note that before their debute, they were trained for 2 years by local expert Idol trainers, except for Jimin who came in late and trained only for 6months after Bighit had to fill-in one more member to bring out the lucky charm in them. After winning the MAMA's New Artist Award in 2014, they were rewarded to appear in a reality tv show American Hassle Life to enable them train on beciming HipHop Artists. During that period, Bang PD took such opportunity to get trainings for BTS in US while making their then upcoming Album Danger.
In 2015, they produced and released 'I Need You" which changed everything. It was sold out more 10 times of BH's expectation due to demands from US Market. Therafter, BigHit started to invest in BTS by hiring only the best of the bests choreographers, voice coaches, musical bands and producers from the US.
Since the Boys became busy with tours, they started hiring thr best of the growing song writers and producers according to RM. In wrting songs, it's RM who is responsible in translating songs written in English to Korean and then gets the approval of the members before he sends back the final translation to the Company's artistic managers.
After the first renewal of their 7 year contract with Bighit, their voice became biggers as they praticipate in making decisions as to their art, music, performances and choice of fashion brands, including in voicing out their united stand against aggressors bullies, racism, zenophobia and social injustices, by being able to choose directors, song writters or producers, choregraphers and dancers or dance company and, once they have chosen and hired one, BTS rest their respect and trust in them.
Moreover, they were alliowed to freely produce their own solo or unit projects and, sometimes, work outside the company provided they still carry their band name. Like Jin, V and Jimin had OST's that were produced by other labels outside BigHit or Hybe.

I agree with what several people have said. While it’s hard not to like Dynamite, Butter and Permission to Dance (they’re all catchy and served their purpose of cheering everyone up), I personally prefer their non-English songs way more. The 3 English songs gave them somewhat of an identity crisis as a band, and they were a little lost direction-wise after their releases. RM speaks about this identity crisis at their 2022 Festa dinner (their annual anniversary dinner with ARMYs). This is also when they announced they were taking a break as a group to focus on solo work (and for their military enlistments, but we didn’t know that at the time). But I guess this is part of the reason for my slight bias against these songs (but I still have them all on my playlist…lol).

It's one of 3 only full English songs that was to cheer people up due to Covid, very pop like, they are to get us dancing and enjoying life. Jin has solo's within BTS albums so it's not the first time he's been centre stage. All BTS members have solo work within BTS albums and outside of BTS. They are multi genre group but based in Hip Hop and they are not afraid to mix genre's. Welcome to the Rabbit Hole (warren as we say in the UK)

JK's My Time. Jin's The Astronaut. And Jimin's Face-Off. No mv for it, but my favorite song from the new album.

This version is just a good poppy and catchy song. The 64th Grammy performance is one of the best performances of butter.
BTS took the world globally with their Korean songs, the English songs came about partly due to the US would not play their songs on US a radio. RM himself said they were not that comfortable with the English songs because they lost their direction a bit. Having said that a lot of new fans were created by the English songs, but most ARMY will tell you they prefer the Korean language songs because they are much deeper and a lot more interesting ( music wise.)

Most ARMYs love their English songs despite these particular songs' lack in lyrical depth because they're bops, sure, but also because of the intentions behind the releases.
The intent behind a song can be just as powerful and meaningful as the words of a song. Of the three, I'm especially attached to Dynamite, as it came out in peak uncertainty-and-confusion-and-scary-pandemic season and it brought me so much needed brightness at the time. I know there are ARMYs who like to dismiss these songs because we're so used to seeing BTS be more actively involved in the creation of the song and the depth that brings, but personally, I think their English trilogy is *very* in character for BTS, just in another way. Dynamite, Butter, and Permission To Dance may not have many layers in the lyrics, but the fact that the guys, who were just as much at a loss of what to do as everyone else during that time, decided to give us these three easy, light songs (and also BE, an album of songs describing their own experiences of the pandemic) because they really wanted to help us feel even just a little better and giving us music was the only way they knew how to do that *is every bit as typical of BTS as having deep lyrics and writing credits* .
Also, the guys used their videos to add layers to these releases. There are many references to MJ in Dynamite, for example, in Butter they not only reference ARMY but also spell the name, and the PTD video is basically about the pandemic experience finally coming closer to an end. BE and the English Trilogy was an era of BTS that was very bright and successful, despite existing because of and through a pandemic, and it introduced a lot of new people to BTS. It's an era any ARMY who was there at the time will deeply appreciate, regardless of how often they play the English songs💜

Also, technically, since the BTS members actively work on their group and sub-unit songs together, and have solo songs within the group's discography and have dropped solo work on the side over the years already, they haven't really been holding back on themselves so much, it's just that now that they've officially taken a break from the group, they have more time to work on more of their own stuff. I feel like every time a BTS member has dropped a new solo work, they've said "this is me until now" or "this is what I've been thinking about recently" or "this is what I wanted to tell you at this moment". That being said, their solo work is, I think, very distinguishable from their group songs. It's so interesting how every time they give us something new individually, it's a new side of them that we see, but still so noticeably them based on what we've already seen. Idk, I feel like it's hard to explain😅

Actually, visuals, fashion, looks very important factors in becoming a KPop idol. They are not considered real artists because they don't write and produce their own music. What makes BTS different from others is their freedom of expression in their music, lyrics and artistry. They are talented artists. Believe or not, RM, Jhope and Jimin used get a lot of hate due to how they look. Many fans didn't think they pass the standard of KPop idol beauties. Jimin had to go on extreme diets eating only one meal a day because he used to have a chubby face and he passed out during rehearsals. RM received hate comments for having tan skin. #kickoutJhope trended on twitter calling him ugly and untalented.

They're super catchy and I enjoy them.. it's just that they're throwaway hits designed for the chart, so they lack all the depth and meaning that we're used to getting from BTS.
Permission to Dance, on the other hand... is just really bad. I know it was co-written for them by Ed Sheeran among others... but it sounds like a Kidz Bop song, and it's just... boring. Even the choreography and the styling in the video are awful (well, the sign language at the end of the video is cute, I guess). Can't say I'm particularly looking forward to that reaction. BTS don´t make their own choreo they have someone outside make one for them. because if they did it all there would not be enough time. they have stylists who work on their looks and themes. but they choose a certain look or style they want to wear for that performance. and even the songs they get that they write lyrics for is approved by bts themself.
and if one member is not all that happy about an outfit or something, they alter it. so they make every decision. but they have worked with the same people since 2013 so they know the memebers personally.
and know what style they like and find something like that. Jin is actually the most easy member to please for the stylists. he wear whatever they bring to him hehe. J-hope might be the hardest to please Also V because they love fashion. j-hope is baggy jeans and colorful outfits. V looks like a vintage dude he is very old fashioned.

    I highly recommend:
-Butter live at Grammys (make sure to pause a couple times).
    -Dynamite (Tiny Desk)
-MMA Dynamite Performance (just let you know this is when they had to go online no live audience and Suga couldn’t be their because he had shoulder surgery but you won’t see the cover up his parts singing and dancing)
-Dynamite+Butter performances (Jin had finger surgery before this performance so he couldn’t dance the whole thing but he was their singing): th-cam.com/video/fhgVIzTQvgQ/w-d-xo.html

The English songs are not my favorite. It took me a long time to be friends with Dynamite due to it's poppy nature and lack of Jin. I do really like the AGT performance. Still can't stand Permission To Dance (I only like the R&B version) but I do like the message and RM's hair (A... mazing). But I'm really good mates with Butter. More Jin, catchy tune, love V in Orange, love the members various hair colours, shout out to ARMY, and it's a super smooth video.

@@nickforell1 The 3 songs that Paula suggest are actually have very different sound one to the other. Louder than Bomb have a unique sound (I love it) and Airplane Pt 2 is latin pop. We are Bulletproof the Eternal is their song for ARMY. It's about their journey with all the members and ARMY. May be this song will hit you more if you know the story of BTS from how they were struggle a lot from their debut until when the song was created.
