    I think the most likely reason for the dull etch was that Sam didn't heat treat the shoe before! Hardening seems to reveal more contrast. A higher grit/cleaner polish before the etch and after wouldn't be bad either! I really liked the choice and editing of music!

      Alec Steele Sam: Please make one more. And I like the sound of the hammer while forging :-)

    • @thethepete731
      @thethepete731 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I kinda like it though, more of a wood like texture to it, which really works for this particular project.

    • @rionmotley2514
      @rionmotley2514 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to think that'd be big part of it as well. Hardening changes the chemical arrangement of the grains - free carbides vs. all the other phases with all the other names - I'm willing to bet there's some undercutting of grain boundaries and some grain size related effects to the finish when etched.
      Come to think of it, I better get my Motlery together before I start sounding like an armchair quarterback!
      Sam's stuff has been a nice interlude (totally jealous of the truck btw)- think you'll keep up with a mix when you're back on the right side of the pond?

      Alec Steele Could it be used on a horse 🐴 or is it just for decoration?

    I can see the horse that get this shoe will be hopping around on three legs holding this shoe up telling all the horses "See Sam likes me best, I'll never step on this shoe ever" Great job Sam.

      Sam Fowler See if you weren't so famous the horses wouldn't feel the need to take the shoes off the other horses, your kindof like the Air Jordans of horse shoes. The horses you dont shod are feeling left out.

      Hello Sam, first great job on the shoe, it looks great. I'm in love with the music you used in this video. Especially the one that start at 6.45. I couldn't figure out the title of the piano part though. I would love to be able to play it ! Would you be able to tell me where to find it please?
      Again thanks for the video and the great editing

    loved it sam.. you have progressed so much in a short time with the way you've handled your shots, love the reverse on the power hammer. the damascus was grand, it was nice to see it used in such a different setting/manner. i think you should really consider doing your own channel alongside alec. it would be great to see you two bounce off each other anx join forces in the editing etc.. kudos to you.

    Sam, if I may suggest, if you want the damascus to be a little more dramatic, let the etch get just deep enough so you can wrap some sandpaper on a block (I like to use hard leather glued to a flat bar) and shine up the high spots. That will make it really pop. You can do this with like 2000 grit. This will leave the low spots dark, and the high spots shiny.

    Nice one! I actually quite like to keep my Damascus a little darker. Also you could use another solution for etching, I for instance use solvable coffee, the disgustingly cheap one where you have to think twice about actually drinking it. The etching takes a little longer, because the acid inside the coffee isn't as strong as sulfuric acid or ferro chlorid but I like the contrast more, it's also very easy to get rid of, because in the end it's still just regular old coffee with a little too steel ions in it.
    The mixture I use is about 10 to 15 teaspoons per cup.
